Story Australia: Rebuilding

Aussies whipe floor with 'best in the world'

Australia capped off a memorable win, belting India by 137 runs, despite a glorious 104 off 87 from Indian opener Kumar Singh. Led by 100 off 90 by opener Mike Terblanche and an Aaron Stubbs unbeaten 93, the Indian attack was no match for the never ending onslaught from the Aussie batsmen. After a marathon 170 run opening stand between Mandell and Terblanche, Terblanche fell after making his second one day ton. Aaron Stubbs equalled his highest one day score with 93* off 62, while only Garry Baldwin and Beau Phelps disappointed.

India were not stand a chance in chasing 319, particularly as they slumped to 4-118. While the Aussies were expensive, they kept on taking wickets at one end, and being belted by Singh at the other. Shane Watson got the breakthough, a yorker taking out leg stump, to cap off a memorable win.

Phelps to miss rest of series

Up and coming Australian allrounder, Beau Phelps, has been ruled out of the rest of the NatWest Series, and the first test due to a broken rib he sustained from a Graham Skinner bouncer in Australia's 147 run win over England. Phelps rocked back on the eighth ball he faced, only to be taken on the chest and retired hurt.

Despite a slow start from the openers, Australia recovered to score ninety runs in the last ten overs to finish at 257. Captain Garry Baldwin again the savior, an unbeaten 56 from 36 balls and 3/23 earning him the man of the match honour.

England's batting woes from the match against India continued as they were destoryed, Nicholas Payne top scoring with a 28.

Looking good, I like this series a lot so far, seeing the poms last in a competition...looks like natural order will be restored in about a decade.

Very disappointing effort by Aus to only get 213 in 50 overs. Looks like we are starting to feel the loss of Beau Phelps.

Stubbs ton destroys Indians

Australia again comfortably beat the Indians, this time by seven wickets, thanks to a maiden one day international century to big hitting batsman Aaron Stubbs. Stubbs raced to 100 off 105 balls as the Aussies easily chased down the 234 set by the Indians.

Earlier, Kumar Singh and Hrishnan Sharma got solid scores, but apart from Yashpal Singh and Gagandeep Singh, the Indian batting folded. Shaun Watts and Chris Butt where the pick of the bowlers, while Shane Watson was expensive.

Aussie opener Mike Terblanche keeps his impressive record in shape, evraging 101 for the series after being dismissed three times. Chris Baldwin's efforts as an opening batsman got worse, bowled first ball by Ian Somasundar.

Aussies bashed, crashed and belted

A dismal batting display from the order that captain Garry Baldwin described 'can score 250 easily every game' saw the Australians go down without a fight against a fast and determined English side. Try valliantly to restore some pride after not being able to make the NatWest final, the English restricted Australia to a lowly 159/8 after 50 overs, despite a gutsy, albeit slow, 63 from Jeff Hanger. Stephen Bucknall was the pick of the bowlers, his ten overs resulting in figures of 2/20.

While England lost a wicket first ball thanks to a good catch by Garry Baldwin, Stanley Hall departing for a duck, England cruised home thanks to a 68 run stand between captain Boxer and Robert Hollinghurst. Surrey's Boxer dominated the Aussie attack, before gliding a ball to Garry Baldwin at second slip.

Australia will play India in the NatWest final, regardless of the result in both teams' sixth and final game.

Second string Aussies put up good fight

Australia suffered its third loss of the NatWest series, its first to the hands of the Indians, who they will meet this Saturday in the NatWest Final.

It was obvious who cared about this match and who didn't, the Aussies resting the whole leadership department, Garry Baldwin, Peter Mandell and Tony Burley. It paid off, stand in captain Chris Baldwin raced to his highest ODI score, 82, before being run out in heartbreaking circumstances. Mike Terblanche also hit 53, and Phil Jaques a 41. Nobody else in the order passed ten as Harbajhan Singh picked up four wickets.

India cruised home by 6 wickets, thanks to Hrishnan Sharma and captain Virender Sehwag. Disappointment for Chris Gandhi in his second ODI, out cheaply for four.
