Australia regain control after middle session of struggle
Australia have ended the first day of their Ashes defence sitting in the driver's seat on 269-4. On a pitch that had a fair bit of turn and bounce in it for first day cricket, Garry Baldwin had no hesitation in choosing to bat after winning the toss.
The Aussies made two surprises at the selection table, opting to go for young opener Mike Terblanche ahead of the ever solid James Adam, and Rory Ebert for just his second test ahead of young WA fast bowler Corey Donald, who took ten wickets in the warm up match. For England, lightening quick bowler Graham Skinner withdrew with a knee injury, replaced by James Anderson, the leading wicket taker of all time.
It paid off aswell, his openening partner Peter Mandell and he putting on a solid stand of 55, before Peter Mandell missed an inswinging yorker off the bowling of James Anderson, dismissed for 28
This brought big hitting Aaron Stubbs to the crease who made his presence known as he smashed part timer Andy Child for consecutive boundries to hit double figures. The Aussies finished the session at 1-86. The pair continued on as Stubbs brought up test fifty number thirty eight, before Garry Baldwin fell one short of his 41st fifty, shouldering arms to a Hunniford ball that nipped back, Australia then sat at 2-146.
Out of form Simon Casey was bought to the crease as Stubbs continued on his merry way, before 2-184 was turned into 3-185 within the space of three balls.
Stubbs, on 76 off 127 balls, charged down the pitch to a loopy ball from 23 year old off spinner Jim Guinness, missing it completely and being stumped by keeper Nicholas Payne, his first test stumping. New batsman Jeff Hanger was off the mark quickly with a single, before a push forward infront of his stumps had Casey trapped LBW for 21 off 27 balls.
With two new batsman after the tea break, the pair of Jeff Hanger and Mike Terblanche added an unbeaten stand of 84 to have Australia sitting pretty at 269-4. Terblanche was given a life on 39 off the bowling of Anderson, as Andy Child dropped a simple catch at second slip. Terblanche will resume on 47, while Hanger will return to the crease on 37*.

Watts injury marrs spectacular day
It was an Ashes day to remember as England fought back to be nearing control, but the big story was the back strain which will keep Shaun Watts out of the next two tests, and this one.
Bowling the last ball of his seventeenth over, a slippery crease saw him slip over mid delivery, where he ended in an awkward position, one that will see him miss the next two tests.
Australia closed their innings at 373 after adding 105 to their overnight total. Both Terblanche and Hanger posted half centuries, before being clean bowled by James Anderson. Anderson ended up with 4-75, while young offie Jim Guinness had 4-88. While only Tony Burley hung around with Chris Baldwin in the tail, Baldwin was good enough to hit 42* from 78 deliveries.
England got off to a positive start with Travis and Hall moving shakily to 44-0, before Rory Ebert picked up Australia's only wicket, Paul Travis bowled for 23. Ebert pitched it up outside off, getting the inside edge and the off stump was pushed back.
From then on it was all England, Australia having to use Garry Baldwin as a speciallist bowler due to the Watts injury. England sit pretty at 132-1, Hall on 63 and captain Boxer on 39. Tony Burley has looked dangerous, his ten overs only going for 15. Australia still lead by 241 runs.

Honours split on Ebert's day
Day 3 honours were shared as Australia began their second innings with just five overs before stumps, to eventually take a 22 run lead.
Young opener Stanley Hall and Roy Boxer began the day off well, adding a further 21 runs to their overnight stand before Rory Ebert pitched one up, catching an outside edge, Garry Baldwin making no mistake, Hall out for 75. Boxer and Child added another 61 runs, before the last ball of the 85th over where a flighted delivery from Burley went through Boxer, bowled for 80. The new ball was taken immediately for little effect early before Ebert swung one back into Child, hitting him on the foot. A big appeal ensued, and Child was adjudged LBW for 40.
Hollinghurst and Alastair Cook continued to torment the Aussie bowlers, who had to turn to Terblanche and Baldwin as a forth bowling option. In a 78 run stand, Cook added just 19 before be trapped LBW offering no shot to Tony Burley. England 324-5.
Unfortunately for them, they lost their next two wickets for no runs, inform Hollinghurst smashed one to the deep where substitute fieldsman James Adam made no mistake off Eagletime's bowling. Hollinghurst a supurb 74. 'Keeper Nicholas Payne fell for no score off 4 deliveries, missing a straighter one from Burley. Resistance in the form of a 25 runs stand between Guinness and Hunniford was only ended as Rory Ebert picked up his first five wicket hall in test cricket. Part timer Aaron Stubbs cleaned up Bucknall and England for 365.
Australia ended the day giving away nothing, 14-0, Mandell 1* and Baldwin 13*.

Rain may save England after mature Terblanche's day out
Only rain will save England from going 1-0 in the Ashes, unless the middle order can produce something special on a fully deteriorated pitch. Rain is forcasted in the London region, and it was what resulted in stumps being called an over early last night.
Resuming at 14-0, Australia lost Garry Baldwin for 20, caught easily by Child at first slip off Hunniford. Not long after the Aussies slumped to 2-42 as Stubbs smashed one back to Hunniford, which stuck in one of the great reflex return catches.
Australia stumbled another 20 runs on the board, before yet another wicket fell. This time it was Peter Mandell for 23, plumb in front from a big turning Guinness delivery to which he shouldered arms to, Australia in trouble at 63-3.
Just as Hanger and Casey looked to be getting things back on track with the card at 110-3, Casey made the fatal mistake of playing the wrong line to Hunniford, which knocked back his off stump and sent him back to the pavillion for 27. Two wickets for no runs as 110-3 because 110-5, as a rush of blood saw Jeff Hanger swing and miss a well flighted Jim Guinnes delivery, smashing into middle stump and Hanger left embarassed for 24.
Needing Terblanche and Chris Baldwin to produce something special with Australia leading by just 118, it looked rosey as Chris Baldwin played some delightful legside shots of the pacemen. Coming down to the pitch and yorking himself against Guinness was his downfall though, the ball ballooning to Alastair Cook at short leg.
At 139-6, Ryan Eagletime joined the inexperienced Terblanche at the crease. Terblanche was lucky to survive a big shout for LBW off Hunniford, moving straight infront of his stumps, the height possibly the only doubt in umpire Wavell Hinds' mind.
After a long 45 runs stand, where a very mature Terblanche moved slowly toward a half century, Ryan Eagletime ended a good support knock, edging one to Travis at bat pad off Guinness. While Ebert fell for just one, LBW from an Anderson yorker, Tony Burley survived 27 minutes to add 37 with Terblanche, who went more agressive to end up 81* as Burley missed a Hunniford yorker. The 81* from the young South African born cricketter was easily his best knock of his career, considering the conditions and opponent.
England had just 10 overs to face, but after an Ebert maiden to being with, Eagletime picked up Travis caught at second slip. In the ninth over, the second last of the day, Rory Ebert completed five maidens as he trapped England captain Roy Boxer for just six, before the rain came down and the umpires called stumps. England, requiring another 235 to win with eight wickets in hand will be hoping for rain, and lots of it tommorrow.

Rain saves clueless England
The pitch was turning and seaming around, and England were clueless. In all honesty, if the match hadn't have lost three and a half hours, Australia would be 1-0 now. But they aren't, mainly because of a stone wall effort from Cook and Payne.
Hall fell early, a good short ball from Eagletime rocketted off his gloves straight to Stubbs at bat pad, a great move on Baldwin's behalf.
As Ebert continued his unplayable length, the bowling change to spin came immediately. Baldwin brought himself on, and first ball had Hollinghurst trapped plumb in front, but given not out by umpire Wajahatullah Wasti. It didn't matter, first ball of his next over Mandell was given an easy catch as the ball rocketted off Hollinghurst's edge.
England were 51-4, a draw looked the only option for them, or so one would think until Andy Child tried to send Burley to the boundry, only to be taken in a sharp caught and bowled chance. 59-5.
The rain came down again, and after that Australia would not strike again, Cook and Payne the heroes of England as they finish 99-5, a drawn match.
As Australia defend their Ashes crown, the series is tied 0-0 after one test, but Australia certainly have the mental edge.

Casey in danger as Adam tons up
James Adam has further put 32 year old opener Simon Casey's sport in jeopardy after smashing 161 runs, while Casey managed just 11.
As Australia drew Gloucs and Adam was named man of the match, the selectors are now left with the dilema to choose either the long serving and consistent Casey or up and coming James Adam. With Mike Terblanche in form, and no one else to drop, it will be out of those two for the sixth batting spot.
Shane Watson and an impressive Chris Butt will fight for injured Shaun Watts' spot.

Adam returns in style as Australia dominate a lacklustre England
James Adam has returned back to the Australian test team in style, cracking an unbeaten 106 runs off 187 balls. As veteran Simon Casey made way for the 27 year old, Adam looked in wonderful touch for his forth test ton.
Australia got off to a shocking start, at 1-1 early as Garry Baldwin's first ball resulted in him being trapped LBW for a duck off Steve Bucknall. But it was obvious what England lacked, as the controversial change of Kurt Sheen for Jim Guinness backfired, with no spin option apart from partimer Child.
Child did however put the Australians at 93-2, Mandell top edging a sweep to Hunniford for 40. With Aaron Stubbs unbeaten on 49 at lunch with new batsman Adam, the pair put on a further 53, before Stubbs gave Travis catching practice for 74 off Anderson.
As Adam moved to test fifty number fifteen, he looked in some serious form with Jeff Hanger looking dangerous at the other end.
As both neared milestones, rain interrupted for 41 minutes, but with three overs to go, Adam found the boundary rope for his forth test ton. The third last ball of the day, Jeff Hanger moved to 53* with a four aswell.
With Australia on 284-3, the current partnership at 138, England will hope for some early scalps tomorrow.
