Don't discount the prospect of Jesse Ryder playing for New Zealand in the two-test series against Australia later this month.
The Black Caps all-rounder made a low-key return to cricket on Saturday, scoring 11 runs for his club Naenae Old Boys against Karori.
Ryder trudged off after pulling a Lee Edwards delivery to square leg, but proved his fitness by bowling 11 overs of medium pace for just 10 runs.
New Zealand Cricket's medical staff want Ryder to play first for Wellington in the Plunket Shield but, if that is successful, the Black Caps' selectors must be tempted to take a punt on his undoubted class.
The left-handed Ryder, 25, averages close to 50 in test cricket.
"He looked fit and injury free," Karori captain Simon Baker said of Ryder, who had surgery to reinforce his abdominal wall last month.
"He was caught trying to pull a ball that wasn't really pullable. But he's class – you only have to watch him to know he's class, and it doesn't really matter what level he plays, anyone can get out for 11. If he's fit, they should put him straight into the Black Caps. His bowling was good, he's obviously fit."
Wellington have three Plunket Shield matches left, their next against Central Districts in Napier starting on Friday. After that they are away to Canterbury starting on March 20 and end their season at home against Otago on March 29.
The first test against Australia begins on March 19 at the Basin Reserve. The second in Hamilton starts on March 27.
