Australia in New Zealand New Zealand vs Australia First ODI Match
Match Preview
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the first One Day international between New Zealand and Australia. With a series of matches to come, this proves to be a cracker of a contest, as the Australian's just came off a warm up match against a World XI team in the Northern Districts without a lot of their better stars.
It should be a entertaining match, with both teams struggling a bit with their lists at the moment, as they have lost a lot of good players and now need to breed the youngsters to pick up the slack.
I am joined by Michael Slater who will have a look at the two teams that have been selected for this first ODI match, Michael....
Yeah thanks Nic, well having a look at these 2 sides for this match, it should be a wonderful match, both teams have strong sides in for the first match between the two, and as we have a look at them, we'll just see how good this match should be.
So let's have a look at the home team first, in New Zealand. I think there bowling attack has some trouble down there. Tim Southee is considered a good overall bowler, Jimmy Franklin is more then a handful as well, but looking at the rest of the side, apart from Scotty Styris, i think they will have trouble in the bowling attack. They will need to introduce their Captain, Daniel Vettori early, as he is one of the best bowlers in the game, so he'll be looking to take most of the wicket, as Australia have had a lot of trouble participating against the spin against anyone.
I'm fairly confident their Batting line-up can post a good score here, 260-290 is certainly on the scorecards here with the hard hitting McCullum and Jesse Ryder opening the batting. Ross Taylor is a class, and will be a handful for the Aussies, while Fulton loves to smash it, and Styris is very handy as well.
Grant Elliot likes to come in at the depth overs and knock it around too.
Now let's have a look at the Australian side. Now their bowling attack is right up to scratch. They are missing their best 2 bowlers, Brett Lee and Stuart Clark, but they do have their best ODI bowler back in the side in Nathan Bracken.
Mitchell Johnson is always handy with the ball and for a few wickets. While Hilfenhaus looked good in his second spell against the Northern Districts. James Hopes bowled well also, at the end of the innings as he kept the run rate down for his depth overs. Cameron White and Michael Clarke are the two part time spinners the Aussies have in their team, and if Ponting has his way, Michael Hussey who took a wicket in the warm up match, might get a bowl, same with his brother.
Now speaking off the batting line-up, they have a very good one as well. Katich was on fire in the Warm up match against Northern Districts, as he made 111. Shaun Marsh is opening as well, and will be looking to make a more of a contribution then he produced in the warm up match. Ponting is class, Hussey is in some fine touch, while Michael Clarke comes back into the side, and so does Dave Hussey.
So there it is, it's going to be a fantastic contest, and i can't wait for the start of the match, which is where we head.... Catch ya's later
Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum come to the crease
Mitchell Johnson is given the new ball by Ricky Ponting
Australia in New Zealand New Zealand vs Australia First ODI Match
Australians get early breakthrough (The dangerman GONE) :happy:happy:happy:happy:happy
With Brendon McCullum being one of the better players in this New Zealand squad, Australia would be looking to target him, so he doesn't get comfortable in the middle and start to kill the match like he has done on so so many occasions. McCullum is the dangerman for New Zealand, and like the thread title suggests.THE DANGERMAN IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
New Zealand looked to have started pretty well, until the 2nd over where there was a shot down the ground from McCullum himself. The field was set up, as the first 10-20 overs the field can only 2 players outside the inner circle (cricket rules). McCullum shot down the ground where the field is very slow with a lot of grass. The ball was powerful enough to pass Bracken on the circle, but wasn't powerful enough to pick up the boundary. However McCullum thought there was 2 runs to be taken and went for it. Bracken not known for his strong arm in the field, threw the ball back perfectly, which found Hilfenhaus the bowler at the top of the stumps, and took the bails off, with McCullum coming back for the 2nd, about 4 feet short. What a HUGE breakthrough for the Aussies!!!McCullum is gone for 12, and now things are started to look good for Australia
Brilliant work in the field from Bracken takes out McCullum
With the wicket of Brendon McCullum gone so quickly, Australia would sense a feel of ergency here, and they will be looking to get their next victim very early. Another danger man comes to the crease for New Zealand, Ross Taylor. He is a tremedous striker of the ball, and isn't afraid to take on the early one. 58 matches next to his name and around 1700 runs in One Day matches is a very good rate at this stage of his career, his average is only 39 though, but will be looking to top that today, and it doesnt reflect on how good this guy can be.
Ross Taylor is in to re-construct this damaged total
Jesse Ryder started to get things moving straight after the wicket of Brendon McCullum. He would be thinking in the back of his mind, that it was his fault that led to the run out of the best batsmen in the New Zealand side, but he shouldn't be thinking about that now, as he needs to knuckle down and pick up the slack that McCullum would of taken. He and Taylor need to bring in a big partnership, so that the loss of McCullum isn't taken to advantage by the Aussies.
Ryder is playing well for his 19, and some good boundaries have been a feature in his innings so far.
It has been set up to be a great match, as the Aussies look in front at this stage with a glorious piece of fielding by Bracken at the deep to dismiss the dangerous McCullum
Jesse Ryder needs to pick up the slack for the wicket
New Zealand: 45/1 (off 5.0 overs) J. Ryder: 19*
R. Taylor: 8*
Last wicket fell: B. McCullum: Run out (Bracken) - 12
M. Johnson: 3.0 - 34 (0)
B. Hilfenhaus: 2.0 - 7 (0)
Great work, we have bowled really well. 2 quick wickets have the aussies in good sted. I love the effort and presentation your putting into this story. Great work

Australia in New Zealand New Zealand vs Australia First ODI Match
Australia in deep control, as Taylor is dismissed
Australia once picking up the wicket of Brendon McCullum early in the match, they would be having their heads held high right now about this stage. They have bowled partically well, and without even using their best bowler in Nathan Bracken, who was finally introduced into the attack after about 10 overs, when Mitch Johnson was just giving away too many runs for his spell. Ben Hilfenhaus has bowled superbly, and now with Bracken into the attack, it is going to be hard for the Kiwi's to post a high score, unless Rossy Taylor gets a hold of the best ODI Bowler in the world.
Bracken has played 101 ODI matches and has taken over 159 wickets which is a outstanding record. Never gives away much when he is bowling.
Enters the best ODI bowler in the game
But even the best bowler in the world can give away some big numbers, which is what happened to Bracken with just his 3rd ball of his first over, when Ross Taylor smacked the ball back over the hat of Bracken, as it sailed sailed and sailed over the fence. BRILLIANT,strike from Taylor, and does that prove what kind of form he is in??
When this guy gets going, he is one of the most dangerous batsmen going around, and is very hard to beat. That will do Taylor the world of good, and now he doesn't need to get cocky. He just blastered the worlds best ODI bowler back into the stands about 10 rows back, he doesn't need to loose his mind here.
And well for Bracken, he needs to go back to his marker, and try and pitch it more to his depth and length, that his use too. Because i can admit, that was a shocker from Nathan.
Taylor stands and delivers 10 rows back into the crowd
The reason people call Nathan Bracken the best ODI bowler going around at the moment, is because of a good reason he just produced in this match. The first over of his, he went for a HUGE 6 against Ross Taylor. And just a over later, Nathan Bracken was watching him walk back to the pavillion, as he scored a MASSIVE breakthrough!!! :happy:happy Not only is the hard hitting danger machine McCullum back into the pavillion without posting a damaging total, but so is the other hard hitting superstar from New Zealand, in Ross Taylor.
Australia have made 2 huge breakthroughs early in this match. They will be thinking their favourites now by a long shot.
It was a fantastic out swinger from Bracken, as the left armer comes over the wicket to the right hander, and it just faded away, as Taylor went to hit down the covers. A little more swing then expected and it saw a knick into the keepers hands. The slightest edge, but it's good enough for the umpire who pulled up the finger.
Aussies in total control here in first ODI
But maybe the danger isn't over for the Aussies, as the tall man, Peter Fulton comes in at number 4. Fulton has played 49 One Day internationals in his career, and making just under 1400 runs. He is a dangerous batsmen as well, but can make the honest mistake. Loves to play the big shots as well, so with the fielding restrictions in place, maybe this is the time for Fulton to shine.
He has a big head to fill, as both McCullum and Taylor are sitting back in the pavillion without troubling the scoreboard much.
The 2 players the Aussies would of loved to have gotten out early, and yet here they are sitting with both those 2 men gone.
Peter Fulton comes in at number 4
Australia are in a major position here. With the 2 big wickets down, and after 11 overs, New Zealand are 2/69. They are getting the quick runs, that is a good score after 11 overs, but the thing is, there loosing wickets while trying to score the big/quick runs. They need to settle down a little bit, try and go for the odd boundary, but now just settle down and go for the singles too. It's not all about boundaries in this game.
With Fulton and Ryder still at the crease, it's still anybodys game to be taken.
Ryder is playing a good solid innings and is on 35 after 11 overs, and will be looking to continue that and try and make that into a half century.
New Zealand: 69/2 (Off 11 overs) J. Ryder: 35
P. Fulton: 0
Last wicket: B. McCullum: run out (12)
R. Taylor: c. S. Marsh b. N. Bracken (14)
New Zealand have the run rate, but Australia have taken the first two important wickets. Ryder is playing some great shots and will need to take NZ to a high score if they are to win. You said Fulton is a dangerous batsman, and you've got that right. Bracken needs to perform at the top of his ability to try and get some more wickets for Australia.
Great stuff mate. Graphics and presentation are very good.
Australia in New Zealand New Zealand vs Australia First ODI Match
Match evenly poised after 23 overs off play (Fulton fighting on, but Aussies picking the wickets)
With Peter Fulton coming out after the Australians picked up the two most important wickets they could of asked for, Fulton was the man the Kiwi's were hoping for to make some runs. A dangerous man with the bat, Fulton in just a couple of overs showed what a dangerous batsmen he can be.
A range off different strokes came from the bat of Fulton this afternoon and is showing the Aussies up at the moment. A beautiful cover drive, and then getting trapped in his crease on the back foot, but still manage to knock it for 4.
Fulton becoming a handful for the Aussies
With this little partnership Ryder and Fulton were creating, Australia and Ponting were forced to make a few bowling changes to try and stop this run rate from sailing over the 8 run an over mark which it is threatning at the moment.
James Hopes was the bowler to take the honours away from Bracken, as they needed to slow the run rate down, and with Hopes's slower bowling, he may be able to pick up a wicket or two if he is lucky.
It's been a good record for Hopes as he has played over 46 ODI matches and has taken 39 wickets in his career which is a very good record for him. And will be look to add another couple to his name this afternoon.
Hopes is introduced into the bowling attack
Another bowling change was being force to be made from the Captain Ricky Ponting, as Cameron White the off spinner was given the ball. Australia were in disaray at the start of this series as they didn't have a genuine spinner in their side, and with 3 part timers (White, Hussey and Clarke) they may find it very difficult to use their spinners throughout the series. They have today, elected to give White the ball first, but im sure we'll see both Hussey and Clarke later on in the innings.
White has a good record, with his best figures being 3/5. As he has only taken the 11 wickets in ODI matches.
Spin is introduced for the first time
Nathan Bracken was given the ball again, against Jesse Ryder who is starting to become dangerous. Bracken was bought back into the attack by Ponting to try and pick out a quick wicket here before he goes back out of the attack.
And what a perfect time for Bracken come into the attack, as he took his 2nd wicket of the match which was a important one. Maybe more important then the 2 wickets of McCullum and Ross Taylor. With Bracken being the left hander bowling to the right hander, Bracken got a little late swing on the ball, which made Ryder just prop the ball up into the air, which sailed through the air, and into the hands of Michael Clarke!!!!!
Bracken picks up his second wicket of the match
With the dangerous Ryder gone, Australian have another breathe in this match. With the 3 dangerous batsmen out of the side, now in comes Scott Styris, as he joins Peter Fulton in the middle, and he'll be looking to score some runs here.
A lot of experience from Styris, won't see him do anything stupid here, he just needs to get settled and show them what his done for many years now and play some good cricket which he is known to do. 156 match experience from Styris and over 3715 runs, sees him one of the greatest New Zealand players ever to pull on the cap.
Scotty Styris enters the arena
Ricky Ponting has decided to bring in another spin bowler to try and keep this run total down around the 3-4 an over mark, which it is just hovering on at the moment, as David Hussey has been given the ball taking over from Bracken. Hussey, who has only taken 2 wickets in his 15 ODI appearences, is a better bowler then his stats tell, and he'll be looking for a crucial wicket here are Fulton is running a muck, and with Styris new to the crease, it's the best way to get a batsmen out early.
Dave Hussey is bought into the attack by Ponting
Right away was Hussey involved with things. Scott Styris was the man at the strikers end, as he was on strike to Hussey, as Styris just pitched a ball down the ground looking for a single. As Styris was in the right to call the run, he totally miss judged the speed of the travelling ball which was heading down the ground to White, who picked it up cleanly, and threw at the bowlers end, where Hussey was standing above the stumps.
The old legs of Styris couldn't reach the crease in time, and was about a metre short as the bails came whipping off the stumps.
The Aussies picked out the wicket of Styris, and are now in a commanding position. Their 2nd run out for the match, that'll make the fielding coach happy
Great Fielding by White, brings out a run out wicket
As all the wickets were taking place, no one was taking any notice that Peter Fulton was creeping up to his half century. As all the excitment has been with the Aussies and the last 2 wickets of Ryder and Styris, Fulton has been playing his natural hard hitting dominating game which he loves to play, and is turning out to be a handful for the Aussies.
Only took Fulton 36 balls to reach his half century, not his best, but his shots have been powerful and spot on for out liking. Including 6 sixes and 3 boundaries, it has been a splended innings to watch from the tall man.
Fulton becomes the quiet achiever of the match
New Zealand: 4/ 170 (off 23 overs) P. Fulton: 55* (39)
G. Elliot: 0* (0)
Last wicket B. McCullum: run out (12)
J. Ryder: c. M. Clarke b. N. Bracken (40)
R. Taylor: c. S. Marsh b. N. Bracken (14)
S. Styris: run out (26)
