Australian Domestic Cricket

Not Elliott, he had his chances and blew it big time, got recalled twice and failed both times. Almost got kicked home from the WI tour at one point for 'team' related issues. Not many players have positive words to say about Matty....insular fellow. But, all of that doesnt matter if he got runs, which he didnt.

High praise- Ashley Mallett, the former Test offspinner and respected coach, is in no doubt about the qualities of the Queensland leggie Cameron Boyce. "He is the best spinner in Australia not in first-class cricket," Mallett said in 2007-08.

Key words not in first class cricket.

Well good to have some promising leggies coming through. Looks like Bailey is going the same way as Cullen and Casson.

Finch is a real talent, hes really delivered this season.

I was talking about young leggies, Cullen Bailey is a young leggie who looks to be following the route of other failed spinners.

Another Krejza in the making but hes a leggie so he should get a better run :p But his economy wasn't too bad, only just above 4 an over. Its a shame Finch couldn't make his 100, Dussey reminding the selectors hes still around and White likewise.

Pity White couldnt make it back to back Shield final tons. Blistering stuff from Hussey though, pounding of an innings. QLD bowling was poor, it has to be said. Boyce bowled ok but was taken down far too easily, the Vics just toyed with his bowling. 6 fer was a good effort on a road of a pitch though, for a 20 year old too.

How fast is John Hastings, guys? Looks like a handy all rounder. Has been bailing Victoria out with the bat a few times as well.

Congrats Victoria deserved the title for once again being the best side this season. Hastings stocks must be rising another good performance with bat and ball.

It was a pretty solid performance by Boyce, I think he might not have been ready for a 5 day game and having to support injured bowlers, but good bowling is often about overcoming such things and he did okay.

However, in the first innings, there was no real reason for him to be over-bowled. You don't want batsmen to get too much of a look and that can happen if one guy puts up resistance while others are getting out to you. I think any young bowler is also less likely to be able to keep up the intensity in a 10 over spell, both physically and mentally.

In that first innings against Wade, he gave up some bad balls towards the end, but Wade had also taken his time so that when he decided to go after the tossed up deliveries, he made few false shots. Wade started hitting him around in about the 8th over and it might have been worth going one more to see if he'd get one to hole out, but the next two overs were just bonus for the batsmen. Wade could have gotten out, but the riskiest period was well past by the time Boyce finished his spell.

Boyce is very young and it shows, but I think in a good way. What is most obviously missing is the flipper and wrong'un, but his most apparent strengths are the leg break and slider. The leg break is 90% of the work, so having a great list of variations is not worth having a poor leg break. The other ones can come in their own time, if at all; Warne showed that it's not necessarily essential to use all of them. He is a couple of years younger than Warne on first class debut and it was in that time that Warne learned his flipper. A lot can change for a young spinner.

Go Vics. What a dominant team they have been in the last 10 years, since Cam White came into the side, or maybe when Hookes became coach.
