Should be an interesting little session of play after the bright start for both teams in the Aussie innings!

Symonds Edges To Boucher - Australia 4/115

Andrew Symonds great run in the first match came to a halt with the bat when he was caught behind by Mark Boucher from the bowling of Makhaya Ntini for a brutal 25 runs to leave Australia at 4/115.

(The sun sets in Cape Town and the lights go on)

Symonds showed his powerful strokeplay on his way to 25 from only 21 balls. But his downfall came when he attempted to cut Ntini away at a ball that was too close to his body. This lead to a top edge which flew through to Boucher, who was waiting with gloves wide open.

(Andrew Symonds could have proved the match winner but unfortunatly was caught behind for 25)

Hayden Continues Form - 50* From 65 balls (SR - 76.9)

Matthew Hayden continued on from his 99 in the 2nd test, to make his first ODI half century of the calender year. Hayden showed that his class is still well and truely there as he cruised to 50 from 65 balls at a strike rate of 76.9 as he provided the much needed anchor for the Australian batting lineup.

(Matthew Hayden proves to be the rock in the lineup)

25 Over Update - Australia 4/131 - 125 runs To Win

Some tight bowling from South Africa restricted Australia to be 4/131 at the half way point of their innings. This means that Australia have 6 wickets in hand to make the 125 runs needed for victory, at a run rate of 5.00.

Australia will rely heavily on the current pairing of Matthew Hayden (53 not out) and Michael Clarke (7 not out). If they hope to win this match which allready is showing signs of a tight finish.

We are set for a cracking final 25 overs in this match. If the Proteas can pick up two wickets quickly now, then I think it will be very difficult for the Aussies to get to the target. However, if Clarke and Hayden can get a partnership going for another 70-75 runs, then the visitors will surely be in control.

Too hard to call atm, and I am looking forward to the exciting conclusion to this match.

Im going for an Aussie win, ol' barrel chest has been in the runs lately and larke is due a score!

40 Over update - Aus 7/211 - 45 to win

Rudolph Proves Suprise Packet - Australia 5/189

Graeme Smith showed his captaincy mind when he introduced batsman Jacques Rudolph into the bowling attack, with immediate affect as he picked up the in form Matthew Hayden for 79 to leave Australia 5/189, with only Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey as the recognised batsmen left.

However the LBW decision was quite a contentious issue and after watching the replay, many will agree that Matthew Hayden may have been hard done by.

Kallis Traps Clarke - Australia 6/193

Jacques Kallis put South Africa in a strong position as he picked up the crucial wicket of a free scoring Michael Clarke for 40 from 43 balls as he trapped the young New South Wales batsman infront LBW. Unlike the Hayden dismissal, Clarke can have no arguments over the decision which looked to be hitting middle and leg.

Brad Hogg also fell in the lead up to happy hour (the final 10 overs of the innings) to leave Michael Hussey with Brett Lee to scrap out the win. With 10 overs remaining, Australia need 45 runs at a run rate of 4.5 an over but only have 3 wickets remaining. The talent of Hussey will have to be in full swing to get Australia over the line from here.

(Loosing 3 wickets in the space of 3 overs has brought the worm back towards the South African innings, leading to an exciting conclusion to the first match)

Lee Leaves Hussey With The Tail - Australia 8/219

Jacques Kallis ended Brett Lee's 13 run cameo innings to leave Australia in a tense position at 8/219, still with 37 runs to win at over 4.5 runs per over and with only Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath left to bat.

Kallis swung the old ball slightly away from the big hitting tailender as Lee attempted to drive to mid off. This caught him slightly in the wrong position to play the shot which then flew through to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher who took a regulation catch.

The job will now firmly rest on Michael Hussey, who must attempt to gain as much of the strike as possible. Jason Gillespie is well renowed throughout the world as one of the best defensive tailenders in the game but his one day batting will have to be superb to get his side across the line.

5 Overs Remaining - Australia Require 21 at 4.20

South Africa require 2 wickets to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat while Australia require 21 runs from 5 overs at a run rate of 4.20 to win the first ODI of the Castle Lagar Series.

In true traditional Sout Africa Vs Australia style, this match has also come down to the wire, much like the superseries and world cup games the nations have shared in the past.

oh great!!! onlt two wicks & only 21 runs...
