Jacques Kallis made the breakthrough for South Africa as Ricky Ponting was caught at mid on to be out for 66 as Australia coasted to be 2/183 at the New Wanderers ground in Johannesburg.
Ponting looked to be cruising with 66 from 80 balls at a strike rate of 82.5 before Kallis tempted him into flicking one onto the on side where he was caught by Makhaya Ntini.
Damien Martyn now joins Adam Gilchrist (97*) at the crease with over 20 overs to spare as Australia look to post a plus 300 score.
Adam Gilchrist celebrated his 11th One Day International century as crunched a 85 ball ton to put Australia in a very strong position in the 2nd One Day International at Johannesburg.
Gilchrist brought up his ton with a sweep shot against Nicky Boje which sent the Australian contingent of the crowd into raptures while the South African crowd appeared pleased to have witnessed such an agressive opening knock.
The South Africans will surely have to find a way to stop the worlds best striker of the ball with 20 overs still to come in the innings.
sorry guys i was hoping to have a couple more updates posted tonight but im feeling pretty damn crook at the moment and im off to bed. again i apologise and updates will come tomorrow afternoon aus time. thanks guys and bare with me. australia are on track for a huge score, especially if gilly is still here.
The South Africans, namely Nicky Boje, began the enormous task of reeling in the Australian batsman to attempt to keep the score around the 300 mark to allow them some form of shot at the runchase.
Adam Gilchrist (106*) and Damien Martyn (4*) will look to continue scoring at Australias current run rate of 6.56 runs per over. If they can continue to fire at this run rate they will be on track for a 328 run total. However with wickets in hand this figure could rise significantly.
Nicky Boje made the crucial wicket of Damien Martyn early in his innings to leave Australia at 3/233 with still over 10 overs remaining in the first innings of the 2nd ODI.
Boje tempted Martyn into the sweep shot which he top edged to Jacques Kallis at square leg to be out for 24. It continues a rather dissapointing tour thus far for the number 4 batsman, who is yet to pass 50 in either form of the game.
