Nicholas - Good afternoon and welcome back to the GABBA cricket ground here in sunny Brisbane after one of the most entertaining games of cricket. The tourists coming home with the goods with only 7 runs remaining. Unfortunatly in games like these there can only be one winner, which means one losing captain, and with me is Australian skipper Ricky Ponting. Ricky, that has to be heartbreaking.
Ponting - Definatly Mark. Unfortunatly 7 more runs and I would be alot happier right now. But full credit to India, we really had them by the throat after out bowling in the 2nd innings but they came back harder and Zaheer Khan was just amazing.
Nicholas - Yes Ricky just on the pacemen in this game, they were superb werent they?
Ponting - Well if you look at the stats Agarkar and Khan both claimed 5 or more and Brett Lee bowled with such pace and control to finish with 9 wickets for the match. We always knew that this pitch was going to help the seamers but you still have to bowl well against these batting lineups.
Nicholas - They are very strong lineups indeed. Now just on a personal note, you would have to be happy with your performance?
Ponting - Well yes and no. To make a century on our return home was great but obviously i would have liked another 7 to my score in the second innings. But overall yes im very happy.
Nicholas - Well Ricky best of luck in Perth
(Ricky Ponting celebrates his first innings century)
Nicholas - Ok so now I have with me a very happy Rahul Dravid. Rahul you would have to be delighted with the way things turned out on day 4 here.
Dravid - Well yes very much so. However if you take out our batting display in the 2nd innings we were very much in control the entire match. From the outset Gautam (Gambhir) showed us how to play on this tricky wicket. However this is a great start to our season here in Australia.
Nicholas - Now Rahul you stood up to be counted in the first innings as well, however is the batting lineup a worry to you?
Dravid - Not overly. We may look to introduce one more batsman to the team for the next match but at the moment we will savour this victory.
Nicholas - The bowlers definatly showed that they can match it with the best in this match.
Dravid - For a long time now we have really searched for a good combination to take it to teams right around the world. I think Zaheer and Ajit showed that we can really attack teams with both the bat and the ball. Im really proud of our efforts.
Nicholas - Thanks for your time Rahul.
(Rahul Dravid on his way to 60 as he leads his team to a vital first test victory)
Nicholas - Welcome back to the cricket after one of the most exciting games we have seen on Australian shores in years. Now its time to move to the presentation for the Man Of The Match award. With so many standout performances it was hard to pick just the one man of the match but the judges have decided Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was the most vital member of the game today. Gautam, what a great start to your Australian season.
Gambhir - Yes thank you very much. Its always great to hit the ground running. A century in the first innings was just amazing and to be able to back it up with a solid half century in the second just really builds the confidence going into the remaining tests.
Nicholas - Now you did alot of the first innings work on your own. You just seemed really in the zone there?
Gambhir - Yeah it was just one of those days. Everything just came right off the middle and im very lucky to have had the opportunity. Now i can be a little bit more confident in my ability and my place in the team which will hopefully lead to a significant impact on this series
Nicholas - Well youve definatly started in the right fashion. Congratulations on the award and all the best for the up coming series. Ladies and gentlemen, Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir - Thank you Mark
(Gautam Gambhir's scores of 110 and 66 lead India to a first test victory)
Australian national cricket selectors face a tough task as they look to find a replacement for Shane Watson for the 2nd test in Adelaide starting this week.
Watson suffered his second serious injury of his short career when he was taken from the field with an injury to his left shoulder while fielding in the Indian 2nd innings.
India, lead by Gautam Gambhir (110 and 66) and the pace due of Zaheer Khan (5/56) and Ajit Agarkar (6/51) claimed victory in the first test in Brisbane by only 7 runs to go 1-0 up in the Border/Gavaskar trophy series.
The depth of Australian talent leaves a number of selection headaches for the selectors. With the high standard of current Pura Cup and ING Cup domestic cricket being played in Australia at the moment. There are potentially 5 or 6 players that may get a run in the 2nd test depending on which way selectors wish to strengthen their side.
(Andrew Symonds will be hoping his one day form will open the door to the test arena. Symonds appears to be the favourite to return to the test team)
The last time the teams met at Adelaide, Rahul Dravid lead his team to a 4 wicket victory with scores of 233 and 72 not out against an Australian attack missing Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.
This may weigh on the minds of Selectors, as India amounted 10/523, potentially opening up a spot for another bowler.
The players currently in the frame for selection include:
- Simon Katich
- Damien Martyn
- Andrew Symonds
- Stuart MacGill
- Shaun Tait
- Brad Hodge
- Mark Cosgrove
It appears Symonds, Martyn and MacGill are the favourites to take the spot left vacant by Watson. However Mark Cosgrove has shown excellent form since returning from his omission from the South Australian team and could be a selection bolter.
(The current depth in the Australian cricket team has brought 6 people on the verge of a test birth)
India have made 2 significant changes to the test team ahead of the 2nd 3 Mobile test match in Adelaide starting tomorrow. As expected Dinesh Karthik has been replaced by rising star batsman/wicket keeper Mahendra Dohni while left arm swing bowler Aashish Nehra has been replaced by batsman Yuvarj Singh.
(The recent performances of wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni in the shortened form of the game has earnt him a call up to the test team)
Despite the 1st test victory in Brisbane. It appears the tourists, lead by coach Greg Chappell, were slightly worried about an under stregth batting lineup.
"It was a slight concern for us. Obviously we are delighted to win the first match but we only just got there. If Shane Watson had of been able to bat it probably would have been a totally different story. However with the addition of Yuvarj to the squad we are able to have depth in our batting and Mahendra complements that aswell. This will leave us with a stronger side i feel."

Weather forcasts for the test indicate conditions will be cool while the pitch, as a result of recent heat waves punishing South Australia, has been classed as dry and will result in a considerable amount of turn.
Andrew Symonds has made his long awaited return to the Australian test team after fellow Queensland all-rounder Shane Watson injured his shoulder in the 1st test in Brisbane.
Symonds has been recalled to the team ahead of the 2nd test in Adelaide and will give the team the added strength of a talented batsman as well as a dangerous off spinner.
(Andrew Symonds trains with the Australian test team ahead of the 2nd test)
Stuart MacGill has also be recalled to the team after missing the Brisbane match. MacGill comes into the team at the expense of left arm swing bowler Nathan Bracken who will return to New South Wales for state commitments.
The Adelaide wicket has allready been described by many as "dry with the potential for alot of turn" which has prompted selectors from both Australia and India to pick spinners in their bowling attack. Australia will go in with the lethal attack of Warne and MacGill, to be supported by Symonds aswell, while the ever dangerous duo of Kumble and Singh will tackle the Australian batting lineup.
(Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill will team up once again on a spin friendly Adelaide pitch)
Australian vice captain Adam Gilchrist appeared confident of a series-levelling victory.
"We are still licking our wounds from the first test but this game will have everything i feel. Its nice and hard so Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath can really hit the deck hard. It will spin alot so Warney, MacGilla and Simmo (Symonds) will get some purchase aswell. However this pitch is also flat and consistant and i think there will be alot of runs scored by both teams. Both squads have excellent batsmen in their ranks and this will be a very high scoring game."
