Avast Ye Pirates! PlanetCricket Pillage MLB

Same, I don't have a big enough internet allowance to watch it all

I watched about an hour of it (although I did skip through a lot of it). You did pretty well Chewie from what I saw (first 4 innings), 2 or 3 hits, and I hit a sacrifice fly on your second hit to get you home ;)

Pirates Crush Cubs on Opening Day

boxie.jpg

The Buccos kick-started their season in style with a massive 9-1 victory at Wrigley Field versus the Cubs. Everything about their offence clicked as they forced Cubs started Matt Garza out of the game after just 2.2 innings. They were backed up by a solid performance from starting pitcher Mike Ross who gave up just 5 hits and 1 run with 4 strikeouts in 5.1 innings work, he picked up his first win of the season. Varun Rustagi was the main driving force of the offensive effort with 4 hits including a double, 2 runs and an RBI from 5 appearances at the plate. There were doubles from Choie and Verma as well but singles ruled the day with the Pirates hitting 15 off an ineffective looking Cubs pitching staff.

The main offence came in the 3rd with 3 runs batted in and then in the 8th where Cubs left hander Marshall was absolutely crushed for 4 hits and 5 runs in just one third of an inning. The only Cubs run came in the 3rd when Colvin managed to bat Ramirez in but despite having the bases loaded they were unable to capitalise and bring any more men home. The Pirates added one more in the top of the 9th when Lee singled and reliever Gallagher sent the Cubs back 1-2-3 to end the game and give the Buccs a 1-0 lead in this series.

Mike Ross, who suffered some discomfort while pitching in the victory against the Cubs was shown to have suffered a ruptured ankle ligament and is expected to be out of action for nearly a month.

Meanwhile the Pirates announced that User Twentyten will not be able to pitch in the final game of the Cubs series as he has suffered a fractured finger in training, he is expected to be on the DL for at least 2 weeks

Ok good news and bad news time folks.

Bad news is my gaming PC is totally fried chickened so I won't be able to continue Hornet's Nest or this story in its current form.

However I will be rebooting this story in a new format within a week or two, if everything goes as planned it could be even be higher quality than the updates so far.

Even more good news is this will mean User and I will no longer be injured! ;)

Even more good news is that I'm going to have to remake the team so if you didn't sign up before and now want to you can! Just go here and complete the form.

No!!! Not the end of my favourite story. Oh well, I understand and hopefully this one is better than before :p

I signed-up.

Please note: we still beat the Cubs on opening day of the restarted season but most of your stats were different. I will be doing stat updates every few series so you will be able to see how you're getting on, it's just too messy to post all the stats for each game.

Pirates Drop 2 In A Row to Cubs

Pittsburgh were in trouble from the first inning on Saturday when starting pitcher Riz Khan appeared to strain his thigh muscle right after striking out the Cubs' leadoff man Starlin Castro, he attempted to continue but after walking Byrd he gave up a home run to Aramis Ramirez which left the Pirates 2-0 down. Khan recovered to strike out Pena but had to be pulled from the game as it became obvious he was in too much discomfort to continue. He is still expected to be fit for his next appearance.

The Pittsburgh offense recovered somewhat after a solo shot by Rustagi in the third lowered the deficit to one run and a sacrifice fly by relief pitcher Karstens allowed Coldhill to score the tying run in the top of the fourth. Unfortunately for the Bucs, Karsten gave up the lead almost immediately in the bottom of the inning.

The Cubs added 3 more in the 7th to extend their lead to 4 as Ascanio gave up another 2 run shot, this time to Geovany Soto and also an RBI double to Alfonso Soriano. A solo home run by Bevab at the top of the ninth was not enough for the Pirates and they lost the game 6-3. Brendon Hedger had a particularly bad day, going hitless he also committed 1 fielding error and was left bruised when he was struck hard on the shoulder by a poorly controlled slider.

On Sunday, Bevab got the offense going early at the top of the first with his second solo shot in as many at-bats to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. But Aoun Muhammad struggled in his first start of the season giving up a 2-run homer to Soto in the second which handed the lead back to the Cubs. Things only got worse for Muhammad in the 4th as a three-run blast from Reed Johnson plus two more RBI singles from Baker and Soriano left the Buccs trailing 7-1. Muhammad was pulled from the game after that 5 run inning and relievers Morton and Veras managed to give up no more hits for the remainder of the game.

Verma led the offensive fightback for the Pirates as he went 3 for 3 plus a walk and scored twice, once to a sac fly by Lee in the fifth and again in the seventh when Choie hit an RBI single. But scoreless eighth and ninth innings left the Pirates with their second defeat in a row as they lost the game 7-3 and the series 2-1. Hedger's poor start to the season continued as he went 0 for 4 in the game, Lee and Rustagi also went hitless.

Pittsburgh will hope to get their season back on track as they head to St Louis tomorrow where X-Factor Jones will start against Kyle McClellan.
