Your Cricket Batting Thread

I like Matty Hayden, obviously. I open the batting but instead I'm a right-handed batsman. I very much like to walk down the wicket on the odd occasion to a quick bowler but instead of taking a big back swing I use the speed of the ball to my advantage and just force it through the covers or midwicket. At first I'd walk down half way through the bowlers run up and ended up giving the bowler time to re-adjust his length but now I've timed the walk to perfection (or how good as I can do it) which is right when the bowler has his arm lowered and about to sling it.

In my competiton though, we play on artificial surfaces so the bounce of spinners can get a little high especially to those who really loop the ball. I had the chance finally to play on turf in representives last week in a practise match and made a slowish 22, I tried to get used to the turf wickets as I hadn't really played on one before but I was pretty proud of it but a half-century was on the cards.

I'm naturally a defensive batsman but gradually I'm beginning to get more and more confident with my attacking shots so much to the point where I'm rushing things. I'm opening tomorrow in U/16s chasing 230 runs off 60 overs and the same thing in 1st grade.

Last season I only played junior 15s and averaged 59.75 with the bat and this year...

U/16s - 60 n/o in a 30 over One-Dayer, we only batted for about 20 overs and I had the flue that day. We played on one of the best club grounds in NSW.

2nd Grade - Opened the batting and made 2, this was just after I played in the 16s game and I was still feeling a little sick. I was actually a little supprised as I thought I'd really struggle but on a different day if I had've gotten my head down and played correctly, I think I could've made runs.

U/16s - Made 31, batted for about 20 overs in a 2 dayer which we bowled the other team out in 28 overs. I batted at 3 because we were facing 1 of the lower teams and even in the 16s you have to rotate the batting around. But I got out to a spinner, trying to dance him in the 2nd last over of the day.

1st Grade - I filled in much like I'm doing this week aswell. I batted at 7 and made 3. Apparently I made my runs off the best bowler in the comp who took 68 wickets last season but in the end I halled out to a spinner.

My weapon of mass destruction is the Wild Beast ;)

Also, theres an U/10s player whose related to Shane Deitz (South Australia opening batsman) who scored a double-century not out and took a hattrick in the same match.

Sweep Shot

The sweep has become the favoured shot against spinners, especially by England's batsmen.
It is a cross-batted shot played to a delivery on or around leg stump behind square on the leg side.

There's an element of risk when you play the shot as it requires plenty of confidence to execute properly.

1.Lead towards the line of the ball with head and front shoulder.
Place the front pad into the line of the ball and then bend the front leg while collapsing the back leg.

2. With your head over the front knee, bring the bat down and across from a high backswing.
Strike the ball in front of the pad with the arms outstretched and both shoulders facing directly down the pitch.

Roll the wrists on contact to keep the ball down.

3.Follow through so that the bat finishes in a high position with the hands close to the front shoulder.

Loads more of these to come :D

Plays it as a sweep, but the balls heading off towards midwicket. More a slog sweep if you ask me :p

Those are all available on BBC JikJak :p

I had batting practice today. All over the place as usual. Whenever I stride forward, by back leg slides. But I have found out why, my head doesn't go over my leg. It falls down the other side, forcing my back leg to be dragged! So, I've seemed to kinda fixed this flaw, but I have yet to try it.

And wfdu_ben91, I do that walk down the pitch and force through the legside thing too! But too spinners, and only when I feel well set in. Extremely effective with the tape ball...

I'm a genuine fast bowler (opens the bowling and bats at 11), so I don't know too much about batting, but what I do know is that is that us number 11's shouldn't be taken lightly. I can play a forward defensive pretty well because I go really hard at the ball, but mostly I just slog but it's with genuine cricket shots. I like to hit it down the ground and I always play with a straight bat. The slog sweep is something that I find really easy to play which is pretty odd considering i'm a tall falla. I don't think this post is in anyway helpful or informative, but I thought i'd like to share my opinion.

You'd be suprised to hear this, but to watch a tail ender, a genuine one, bat!

Usually in like tight spots, say 150/9, usually the last man comes in and his technique, although not quick, is pretty much perfect!

I know as a batsmen, over time ive cut corners when playing certain shots, kinda like doing your driving test perfect and then just doing the nessecary on the road to not get stopped :D

Someone said earlier, anything straight, just block. Some cocky batsmen, and i put my hand up here as to have done this, will shift himself outside the line of the ball and try to play it through the covers, and its pretty much effective IF you can time the ball properly

I find it hard to play spinners. I watch the flight of the ball perfectly and then it bobs up and spins near my waist. Any tips on how to play these spinners?

Mind you I bowl part-time leg spin :D

If it's often bouncing up that high Leftie than you want to play off your back-foot. If the spinner isn't making you play off your front foot, then he isn't really doing his job. Unless of course the pitch is providing uneven bounce in which case your probably better off on your front foot than you are your back foot.

My problem is that I can't get my hands into a postion to keep the bat straight when playing drives.
I have a high backlift so when I get into postion to push the ball the bat goes too far into the offside.
Any advice?

44 in juniors, got given out to a dodgy lbw which hit me outside line of leg stump to a left-armer just as I started to get going and that ended up contributing to our loss.

7 in 1st grade, full on. I think I did okay considering I faced one of the fasters bowlers going around in the comp and he swinging yonks.

just relightened my sloggers flame, 40 off 18 which pushed team score up to 180 off 30, we almost lose too...

Reading over this I think everyone has forgotten the three most important parts about batting and they work remarkably well. Concentration, watching the ball all the way onto the bat and picking the right balls to play.

I used to be a tailender who would occasionally be able to smack 30 odd runs off about 10 balls. Then in my 2nd season of seniors, I finally got sick of getting out cheaply and to bad shots. So I started putting my head down playing each ball on its merit and waiting for the bad balls to put away. I'm now a top 5 batsmen and come 2nd in terms of average and runs scored in my team. All I put it down to is the mental side of the game.

Some mates and I are playing a series of practice matches on any fair-weather days. Today I scored 26 off 35 in the first innings after being dropped early on. The medium pacers and spinners I played were negotiated safely (if slowly) but when the fast bowlers came in I struggled, eventually getting out by a plumb lbw.

Second Innings I decided to take alot of risks. I opened with 4 fours from the first ten balls, 2 miscued hooks that went so far behind the keeper could not get them. As the slower bowlers were introduced my strike rate was reduced but with the last two balls of the match going for consecutive fours by me, I reached 55 not out off 54 balls.

Today I got struck 3 times on the pads.

1) Hit my box - other team made an appeal and the umpire said to high.
2) Pitched outside leg stump and umpire said not out
3) Probably would have been out but because of the ruling you have to get a warning first.

I got a warning for the 3rd one, but I was at least trying to get bat on ball (Mind you I thought the rule was you didn't even attempt to play a shot to get a warning) . My coach said to bat about half a metre out of my crease but fortuantely I didn't have to face from that end again.

By the way I play 14 C's. That's why we get warnings.

Can anyone giving some tips just to not get hit on the pads. Except for hitting with my bat :p

Not exactly going to help you as you won't want to do it, but Sir Garfield Sobers response to getting out LBW a few times was to go into the nets and bad without pads for a while. Unsurprisingly he wasn't keen on getting hit on his legs without pads ;)

Basically being able to judge where your stumps are as well as being able to judge length and as a result whether it is too high or not helps a lot. If you can do that and you play with a straight bat and as such aren't playing across the line too often will certainly help minimise LBWs.
