Blocker's Ashes Thread

3rd test, England win the toss on a gloomy morning in Perth: one glance at a spicy looking WACA pitch and Root chooses to bowl.

He's rewarded with a hostile bowling performance. Handscomb provides the main resistance, a vital 89 helping Australia post a competitive 252.

England struggle in reply, with plenty of players getting in and getting out. Cook's 43 is the top score.

England need a breezy half-century last wicket stand from Overton and Anderson to get to 235 all out, a deficit of just 17.

England still in the series, just about!

I see that pull-shot onto the pad and to the wicket-keeper a lot in videos/streams. Not really a fan, looks weird and happens too often imo.

Some other really nice wickets in there though.

Yep it does happen too often. Front foot pull is a culprit of a few things in my book.

2nd inns has a few beautiful dismissals. Video later. Still in this!!

The good thing is that if certain 'bad' dismissals can be removed it allows then to turn up the number of outside edges without making the AI too easy to knock over.

At the start of the 3rd innings, it's anyone's game with just 17 runs separating the sides.

Early wickets for England, and maybe the comeback is on... but it's not to be, as Warner and Renshaw get off to a great start.

England pack the off side and attack the left-handers' corridor from around the wicket. It slows the rate down but there's enough punches through the gap to keep the pressure off and take the Aussies to a century opening stand, possibly a series-clinching partnership...

Woakes gives England a glimmer of hope, a quick double strike to remove Renshaw (49) and Kahawja (4). But Warner passes 50, and along with captain Smith takes the lead over 150. Broad gets Smith (15) with a cheap-looking wicket after one bounces more than expected and catches him high on the bat, and Anderson sneaks one past Warner's defence to castle the opener for a fine 77.

Maxwell and Handscomb see it through to close of day 2 with no further loss, and the match is still in the balance but England won't want to chase too many 4th innings.

They push the score along in the morning, but then Handscomb (28) falls pulling Overton to the legside, and shortly after Maxwell (27) edges Woakes to point. At 227/6, a lead under 250, England are still hopeful.

An awkward partnership between Starc and Cummins is a painful one for England, and there's great celebration when Cummins (23) skies one off Ali and is caught brilliantly on the run by Broad. Starc (22) is also taken briiliantly, and Ali helps mop up the tail. Australia all out for 270... England set 288 to save the series.

England need 288 to save the series...

Cook gets off to a fine start, but Stoneman is looking uncomfortable. None of the veteran's fluency rubs off on the newcomer, and though they make 50 partnership, Stoneman's contribution is just 11, and he falls almost immediately after.

Vince also looks unsteady, but digs in. Cook is well settled and scoring freely, and brings up a brilliant 50. It's devastating for England when he's caught edging a leg-side poor ball from Lyon to go for 57. The Aussies celebrating as if this would be the key wicket...

England need a captain's innings from Root, who has had a poor series so far. He starts slowly, but eases in to his innings and picks up his scoring rate. Vince is hanging in there too, punctuating defence and plays and misses with some solid drives.

This is a vital partnership in the series, and England slowly grasp the upper hand. The partnership passes 50, and goes on... and on. Root brings up a brilliant 50 and starts to accelerate and takes the partnership past 100 with a fine drive through mid-off. Vince, now looking increasingly comfortable, passes 50 himself with the help of an edge through slip, reining himself in as his captain drives England towards the target. The partnerhsip goes through 150 and Root brings up a stunning, vital century when his team really needed it.

The two power on bringing England home to a stunning 8 wicket victory to stay alive in the series. Root finishes on 122* and Vince 86*, a brilliant unbroken partnership of 210 to take England home.

How many days did it last?

For those saying you can't pull outside off... these may not count but I think they do??? What am I missing?

@T.J.Hooker @chaman82

What batting difficulty are you playing on?

Also in DBC17 people always used to say it was easier to pull/hook with left-handers. So could be something about the right-arm bowlers coming around the wicket in your video
