Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia) Dec-Jan 2011/12

The Aussies did well. But people criticized us saying we don't deserve No.1 (we din't) neither does England. Sub Continent players go to Aus or Eng they get battered and when they come down to us, we hammer them.
Bottom line is there is no team that is worth No.1 atm. If there is one, then it has got to be the Proteas.

It's nice to have platitudes, but the reality is that winning 2-0 at home doesn't actually equate to getting beaten 4-0 away. Even among Pakistan and Sri Lanka, India's touring form has been astonishing. Poor tourists are certainly pandemic, but to greatly varying degrees.

Interesting to hear you say Australia gets hammered in the subcontinent. Have you been watching cricket for long? Pretty sure Australia's recent record there involves:
  • 3-0 win against Pakistan in 2002-03
  • 3-0 win against Sri Lanka in 2004
  • 2-1 win against India in 2004
  • 2-0 win against Bangladesh in 2006
  • 0-2 loss against India in 2008
  • 0-2 loss against India in 2010 (would've been 1-1 but for epic last wicket stand)
  • 1-0 win against Sri Lanka in 2011 (SL saved by rain in two draws)

So that's five series wins in seven, plus of course about a billion victories in ODIs. I agree with you that India has tended to beat Australia at home, often in a tightly contested matchup, but they're the only ones. Let's not pretend there's a culturally determined subcontinental "lions and lambs" thing going on that might lend legitimacy to India's poor record abroad.

the thing is that there is no team dominating cricket since the end of australian dominance.aussies record at that time was quite good even away and thats why i dont see any deserving no.1 may be saffer but they also not that good

Safs have always been good . Only if they could get over the last few meters they will be deserving champs.

Check out the dates. 2002, 2004...We are talking about the "current Aussies".
And winning against Bangladesh, seriously? That's a quiet an achievement, ain't it?
2-0 twice that shows how bad this side which beat India 4-0 are outside home. Am pretty sure some changes in the Indian side will polish the team's performance.
England, whose home conditions are similar to Aus amshed you in the Ashes. Right now in TEST cricket. It all depends on where and with whom you play.
Clarke has already started announcing that Aus is gonna get back to No.1 spot. Am pretty sure they are better and they will do better than England in Indian and Pak conditions. But winning isn't assured!
Being the No.1 ODI squad..you lost 2-0 in ODIs aswell back in "O" 10.

Repeating it yet again! No team deserves than No.1 spot. It is going to change every fortnight. South Africans truly deserve it, more than anyone else. They got the best squad in the current TEST stats. They just need to work much harder.

True that!

Anybody think it would be a bold and good move to promote Virat Kohli as the captain in test matches? I still gnaw my teeth seeing Kohli mouth expletives on the field, but right now we need a Ganguly type captain who is in your face and who doesnt mind getting under the opposition's skin. I dont want Sehwag as captain and certainly not Dhoni to continue. Either Gambhir or Kohli should be made India's next test captain. When Graeme Smith was made captain, he was very young and it was a surprise but he led South Africa very well at the start of his captaincy. Similarly if Kohli can reprise that, India would find their bearings back.

Exactly check out the dates. Those series have nothing to do with this current Australian team. In 2008 we had Cameron White as our primary spinner :lol How the heck could Australia hope to win in India like that? In 2010 Australia were one missed runout and a bad LBW decision away from drawing that series (and that was just in the last few overs)

The real paper tiger is England. They've won only 1 Test in Asia in the last 11 years (barring Bang. Tests of course).

You should have left it without the last sentence. Definitely right, each of the big 4 teams has their flaws. But SA certainly don't deserve to be #1. They might fall into it, but they have just as many holes as the other teams IMHO.

Don't the indians always play against them? Which got them to number 1 a few years back?

Rather than sitting around hoping the incumbents come good, I think we need to give the likes of mini-Marsh, Maddinson et al a run in international cricket as an insurance policy. Ideally I'd actually like to see Warner and Hughes opening in 2013 - they've both got buckets of raw talent - but we've got to be realistic about the prospects of that actually happening.

Warner's actually pretty easy to fix. He's lack of form has been against the spinners. If Langer does his job properly (he won't) he will coach Warner against spin.

That's sad. You might have forgot about beating RSA in RSA...and we lost a match but yet we did not actually get all out below 50 there. And we got it by beating Aus 2-0 as well. 1 series with Bangladesh doesn't make much of a difference. Acc. to your logic... beating Ban takes you to Rank #1 in no time.

Have they won any series in Asia? The so called No.1 i.e.
