Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia) Dec-Jan 2011/12

You mean the Sehwag who managed scores of 0,0,8,32 over the next two tests in the flattest of tracks?

He went back home again because he was not completely out of his injury. Those 4 innings doesnt make him so bad. He was rushed through in an attempt to resurrect our tour, and it flopped. Here he is fully fit enough, and he got a decent score in the first innings (67).

Really feel sorry for Tendulkar gets close to 100 then gets out. Must kill him inside

Right now, that must be the least of his worries (the 100th ton). But to be fair on him, of all the batsmen who played this test, he and Hussey (in the 2nd innings) looked the best out there on that pitch. He is batting beautifully, and he just needs people to rally around him and he should soon get that big one for India.

don't give accuse mate, let them say what they want as our players have not perform this year in Test cricket. Not only sehwag, whole Indian Batting needs to click. Apart from Batting, Dhoni needs to be aggressive.
Sometimes (actually most time) i feels that he decides very early that opposition Batsman (mostly lower batsman) will get dismissed either by LBW or Bowled and thats why he spreads the field to protect the boundaries in thinking of that catch won't go to Third slip or Point fielder or Short Leg.

As an Indian Fan i hope with New Year india fortunes also change.

James Pattinson is on Fire!!!!

Four Wickets in only his 3rd Test Match. What a great prospect.

Meh, won't read too much into the result.

Gambhir: Didn't look comfortable at all and couldn't get past the tough early period. Needs to be able to make ugly runs.

Sehwag: His contribution in the first innings was vital but his luck ran out in the 2nd innings after being dropped 3 times in the first innings. Also, his bad record in the 2nd innings continues.

Dravid: Didn't look particularly fluent but he was willing to graft and make those ugly runs and at the end of the day, that's all that matters. He is in good form and I think things will start to come together for him.

Tendulkar: Looked good in both innings. I'm sure he'll get it right sooner or later because he looks in fine touch.

Laxman: His poor form continues and as our chasing expert, he let us down. He has been in poor form for some time now.

Kohli: I really like Kohli but he was poor in this match. I'm willing to give him another chance but I don't know if Dhoni sees it the same way.

Dhoni: Batting was poor again and his shot selection is quite atrocious. I don't think he has the technique to deal with test cricket. Captaincy was very negative when tailenders were batting at the end of the 3rd innings.

Ashwin: Made good contributions with the bat and bowled decently on a pitch that didn't offer too much. I didn't expect much from him on this pitch so I think he had a decent match.

Zaheer: He bowled a fair few overs and that augurs well for India. He looked very threatning in periods and inspired confidence in Ishant and Umesh. Great to have a world class bowler back.

Umesh: Fantastic match. Great prospect. Bowls at good pace and bowls with heart. I think he could finish the series as India's highest wicket taker. What strikes me about him is that he isn't always consistent with his line and length but he is a genuine wicket-taking bowler, luck or no luck. However, he was a little too short at times during this match and to make the most of his swing, he needs to pitch it up.

Ishant: Was fairly anonymous throughout the match but the ease with which Ponting (his supposed bunny) dealt with him is fairly worrying.

Overall, many positives to take out of this match. India invariably starts oversease series' on the wrong foot and I expect them to come back strongly in the 2nd match. It's a 4 match series and so there's enough time for them to do so.

I remember quite a few saying similar things last summer...we all know how that turned out.

The crucial thing there was we were injury struck that tour, and the most crucial of our players were away injured. We didnt have a sense of stability to our lineup. This time hopefully with no injuries, we should be able to have the stability to wriggle out of this hole. And we have done it in the past.

Australia is inconsistent these days so I definitely won't be writing off India winning in Sydney. Ideally I'd like to get rid of Haddin, can't stand him throwing away his wicket anymore, Wade or Nevill surely have to be better than what he can offer.

Don't you think some of the comments dissing Indian team are a bit over the top? Yes, our performance on the 4th day at Melbourne was shocking and poor, but that doesnt take away the good performance that we put up over the past 3 days of this test. Nobody expected us to put even such a performance up in the first test of a series.

Yes I don't think this is any time to panic or give up. India's bowling was very good and they have the talent in their batting to really play well at Sydney and Adelaide in particular. I'm not sure Australia will be able to bowl as well for the entire series so there will be a chance for the top 7 to make some runs. They just need to be ready.

One thing I will say about India - they need to fire up!! It's all well and good pointing out that Hussey could have been LBW twice and caught down leg etc. but the appeals from the Indians were pretty soft for each one of those incidents. If your appeal is a doubtful one, then it's very easy for that doubt to transfer to the umpire's mind as well. It was a common theme, not just for Hussey's reprieves but other times. There were things that weren't out, but were close and yet their was either no appeal or a muted shout. eg. I can think of a couple of times Zaheer hit the pads that were a lot closer to being out than the appeal would have led us to believe.

We can just hope. In last one year look at our batting scores.

Code:
India	158
India	169
India	201
India	209
India	224
India	244
India	246
India	252
India 261

No scores under 150?? That's better than Australia.

Well, it was already inconsistent in the match with yet another batting collapse.

Was more talking about the extremes of our results like all out for 47 in SA then winning the 2nd test, comprehensive win against NZ in the 1st test followed by a shock loss in the 2nd test followed by a win against India.

But speaking of the batting collapse, you could understand the top order collapse, our top order has less than 10 match experience between them, the key has always been the middle order stepping up and in this match Ponting and Hussey did just that. Haddin on the other hand still MIA. That is what has been missing in each of our batting collapses previously.

My 1st Test review

I remember suggesting before this series that after watching India's much vaunted top six's vigils this year facing the quicks in South Africa, the thrashing in England and home/away vs West Indies - that their batting line-up is very vulnerable.

Throughout this test i always felt that AUS could restrict them and they did. Gambhir and Sehwag technical woes have exposed all year vs quality quicks and I wish commentators would stop hyping them so much when they come out to bat.

The legend trio Dravid/Tendy/Laxman although they are good enough to make runs they are showing signs of their age.

India's # 6 remains a massive grey area also. I rate Kohli highly, but since Ganguly left IND have struggled to find a solid replacement for the position.

The last 20 years the legend trio plus Ganguly and Azharuddin has given IND its greatest batting era in its history. I reckon when the big three eventually go, IND will struggle immensely to find replacement the same way AUS are seeking a next Shane Warne.

AUSTRALIA

Cowan earned his debut and it was refreshing to see an opener show old style values at the top of the order. If Shane Watson comes back before the series is out, he may have to go presuming also veterans Hussey/Ponting keep making runs.

But long-term i can see him opening for AUS full-time fairly soon.

AUS batting remains very shaky though and to me it speaks more of the current state of international cricket in which most of the top teams struggle against the moving ball.

Only ENGLAND I would say has a batting line-up these days best equipped to deal with quality quicks on seaming decks.

Can't wait until Pattinson/Cummins bowl together. Its great to see their emergence since although Harris is superb bowler, having a cronically injured 32-year old bowler as the spearhead was always a dangerous ploy.

So although word that Harris may be fit for Sydney and they may want to play 4-quicks. Maybe with the emergence of those two young guns, the selectors dont have to force Harris to play tests - let him be like Malinga and play T20 and ODIs for AUS alone.

Big shout outs to Sidvicious and Hilfenhaus as well.

Last year in the Ashes i thought Siddle bowled well without luck and he continued that trend in Sri Lanka and South Africa. He is bowling fuller now and he is getting the rewards.

Very happy for Hilfy as well, I still dont know what happened to him during the Ashes. But the Hilfy of South Africa 2009 - India 2010 is back and that long overdue 5-wicket haul has come. If he keeps it up, he should be doing for Australia what Anderson does for England these days.

Hopefully a seaming Sydney wicket like last year is seen and Perth is bouncy since if Watson isn't going to be fit, those a two places AUS should certainly unleash 4-quicks on India.

Australia: Michael Clarke (capt), Brad Haddin, Ed Cowan, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mike Hussey, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, David Warner (12th man to be named).

That is the one thing you have to like about our new selectors, they name their squads early and there is very little uncertainty.
