Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

I guess even Marchena has left valencia . So the defense looks rubbish without him and Albiol who left a year ago. But they are really good when it comes to producing talents. Now they have Mata and pablo but that will hardly trouble United

Yea they are but they arent those big Spanish clubs. If this was Valencia of 2 years ago then I would see your concern. This Valencia is much worse then the Vilareal that gave ManU trouble a few years ago.

They eat Paella!

They eat Paella!

They do and its damn good. I'm hungry.

After watching the super cup I was disapointed with Inters play and some of Rafas moves. Chivu had a horrible first half at left back and seemed to be scared to head the ball when it was coming his way, probably because of that head surgery he had a couple of years ago. He should have realized that and put Zanetti at left back and substituted a midfielder for Chivu because there wasn't any service for Milito and Eto. Also Milito was horrible, part his fault and partly the lack of service, he needed to make some moves earlier.

Horrible performance from Inter. A shadow of the side that won the Champions League only months ago. Seemed like they were at this game as a formality rather than with the intention to win.

This is a false dawn for Atletico though. They are gonna have a horrid season, I know it.

Atletico. :) What a win!

Can't do much worse than last season in the league really, will definitely do better than last year.

Guys thought of the champions league for quite sometime and came with something interesting related to Liverpool, man United and the nation that won Champions league. If we analyze their performances in the champions league from 2003 (the year i started following soccer) its like this :

Season|Liverpool|Man United|Winning Nation
2003|Group Stages| QF|AC Milan (Italy)
2004|Did not Qualify| 2nd Round|Porto (Portugal)
2005|Champions|2nd round|Liverpool (England)
2006|2nd Round|Group Stages|Barcelona (Spain)
2007|Runners-Up|Semis|AC Milan (Italy)
2008|Semis|Champions|Man United (England)
2009|QF|Runners-Up|Barcelona (Spain)
2010|Group Stages|QF|Inter (Italy)
2011|Did not qualify|TBD|TBD

If you guys can observe , the cycle that started in 2003 once again is repeating itself from 2010 . So if this cycle continues , Liverpool will lift the champions league in 2012 :p

Anyone else saw the Bremen vs Sampdoria 2nd leg a few days ago? Brilliant game. Great comeback from Bremen, and Marin absolutely shone in the second half and extra time. Also assisted both Bremen goals, and hit the bar once with a brilliant shot. He deserved a goal, was absolutely toying with the Sampdoria defence.

I watched the highlights and Sampdoria was only like seconds away from qualifying but allowed too much space and time for Rosenberg to shoot. If they have qualified instead, then the groups will be different. But it was a great game overall.

yeah marin was denied once by cross bar and once by the post . He is a real talent and i have no idea why schalke sold him :facepalm

Ugh, yeah, Marin used to play for Gladbach. I think you're confusing Marin with Ozil here. Ozil played for Schalke previously.

Lol as long as man united crash out in the 2nd round to Jose and Liverpool win next year, sure :laugh

Liverpool winning the CL next year? :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh

Sorry, that's the biggest laugh I've had in ages - and I think it's very sad that someone cares more about hating one club than supporting another one. Anyway, have fun trailing in our dust again this year - can't wait until you lot come to Old Trafford.

Agreed - Valencia are definitely not the threat they were, but it would still be most unwise to under estimate them.
