Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

A typical UEFA cop out - quelle surprise. :rolleyes

Drogba received a four-match ban with further two suspended when he swore in front of the camera two seasons ago.

Gattuso headbutted a manager's assistant and got away with only four-match ban!

Then again, perhaps it's not all too surprising from UEFA since a certain man from France is governing it. I guess to UEFA, swearing is as bad as headbutting someone. :facepalm

Drogba's was a three-game ban. Technically, Gattuso's is a five-game ban, with his booking during the game, which sounds about right to me.

If Jordan did provoke him by using a racist, xenophobic remark, he's a very lucky man to get away with it.

The English press' reaction, labelling Gattuso a "mafioso" is very saddening and regretful.

Good win and glad we kept a clean sheet against Copenhagen. It's slightly frustrating that we did not score more especially in the first half where Copenhagen were rusty and lethargic. Other than that, it's a pretty decent performance.

Totally agree. Jordan is the person to blame here. Should be banned for life. If one of the Italian coaches had made such comments people would have been going on and on about how racism still exists in the Italian game.

In other news......we picked up a hard earned draw at Lyon last night. Not the best result, but given a lot of factors.....I'll take it. Xabi = Legend.

The strange thing is, Jordan played for Milan and Gattuso played for Rangers.

A pretty poor game tbh. Lyon were fantastic defensively but never threatened going forward. Cris in particular was outstanding. Madrid lacked that edge in attack. Without Marcelo they seemed kind of broken offensively, Ronaldo didn't really have support on the left when Arbeloa plays there.

At least this time, you got the away goal which I think it's going to be crucial in the second leg.

Oh dear, Julio Cesar made a mistake and Bayern got the crucial away goal. But I have to say the game was somewhat pretty open at times and both sides did miss a lot of chances. A draw might have been a fairer result instead.

No away goal for United but they should get the job done at Old Trafford although it could be a tricky second leg as Marseille only need a score draw to progress.

A disappointing performance. Fundemental problems with the 4-5-1. Fletcher and Gibson pressed high up creating space for Carrick, but that left him with no passing options, meaning he had to try awkward passes a lot, and mis-hit them. Nani therefore had to drop deep into areas where he couldn't really test the Marseille defence. Berbatov does not work very well at all as a lone forward. Only leaves him isolated.

I've been pretty stubborn all season saying that this Utd side is perfect. "Perfect" in the sense that everyone in the side has a role, and is there for a reason and specific purpose. However I'm coming to the conclusion that the side is too functional. We could do with another creative midfielder. Modric in the summer perhaps? Really missed a chance with Llajic who's becoming a fantastic player, and exactly the kind of player Utd could do with right now.

No away goal again - I've seen that come back to bite us in the arse so many times before. What's the point of playing Berba up front alone? You need a worker to perform that role - like Rooney. Berba's no worker. ;)

Once again , the decline of Italian clubs proved true yesterday . Though i thought a draw was the fair result . Really have to feel for Julio Cesar !
