Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Disappointing? It'll be bloody hilarious!! All that money spent and they crash out at the first stage and I'm sure it'll happen. What are the permutations? Beat Bayern and hope that Villarreal can take a point off Napoli? Good luck with that, Mancini. :lol

As for us, I'm confident we'll be able to at least get a draw in Basle. We should've beaten Benfica, we had the chances to do it, but overall it was a fair result.

Nah i wont laugh them, it was always a hard group and the pressure of CL football is different and it was a learning experience for these guys.

At the end of the City on paper along with Madrid are the only two teams who could stop Barca from winning the CL this season IMO. So if City do go out, it makes Barca job easier once they don't slip up.

Not sure about that. Even though Mancini didn't have the best of squads with Inter back then, it's worth noting that he has never had the best of records in Europe.

I know City were in a tough group but I wonder if Spurs were in it, would they have done better?

It's an incredibly tough group but Mancini made mistakes. Why did he drop Lescott in crucial games? And he continued with Dzeko who's been abysmal in Europe this season.

lol no way. This's what he himself had to say on his team's chances. He clearly wants to win the Europa League than exiting at the Champions League's Round of 16.

Roberto Mancini: Man City are not good enough to win UCL - ESPN Soccernet

We hope we can beat Bayern Munich and Napoli can lose a point at Villarreal but I think we should be realistic. I don't think we have a team to win the Champions League because Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, (AC) Milan are maybe better and they have more experience than us in the Champions League.

Loving the fact that he didn't mention United/Chelsea when he managed to sneak in Milan among those favourites. :p

Has anyone been following Shakhtar Donetsk in this season's Champions League? It's a rather shock that they have completely struggled in the group stage when they top their group last season and progressed till the QF.

Yeah, tbh I was expecting them to finish runner-up to Porto in this group, but a string of shocking displays has seen them already out. What's even more surprising in that group is the performance of APOEL. How are they doing domestically?

If they were in this group, probably not IMO.

That's a typical coaches response after such a defeat. If City had defeated Napoli his response would have been the opposite.

I Don't support any club. Just watch all club football. I support the England national team.

confusing, though fair do's. I kind of admire your refusal to risk any emotional pain in the outcome of the EPL. like walking into a casino and going "all on red, and er, all on black."

just as a dundee united and scotland fan this is somewhat of a slap in the face. (ok, I have soft spot for man u as well)

barmy, I know you support the english cricket team, do you support the football team as well? I'm going to be honest that while I don't mind the cricket team or rugby team I could not physically bring myself to support englands football team. even if they were playing mars for the enslavement of the human race.

I was brought up in London but my dad is the "anyone but England" type. He supports the cricket team as they used to be a British team but hates the rugby team with even more passion than the football team.
Personally I don't like the England football team but I can't help supporting them at big tournaments.

at least you can relate to the sentiment then. I always feel like I come over a bitter, twisted individual with my refusal to get on board with the england team when all the other scots on here (which as far as I'm aware is two other people, you and highlander) are supporters. it's really not, just a sporting rivalry that's fun to play up to.
