Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Underdogs - APOEL, Benfica, Napoli, CSKA, Bayer04, Zenit, Basel, Marseille

Depend on how you define it, I wouldn't necessarily consider all of them as underdogs. The only two are probably APOEL and Basel. The rest are pretty much darkhorses in the Champions League. With a little bit of luck in the draw, I do think Napoli, Benfica and/or Zenit can go far and they certainly can cause problems for the bigger teams.

Looking at the 16 teams, Madrid and Barcelona are definitely the two strongest one there with Bayern Munich probably just behind them. It wouldn't be surprising if 2 of those 3 teams are in this season's final.

Real Madrid to win the cup with Bayern second IMO. I just don't feel Barca can do it again, I reckon they'll be out in the semis. I may be proven wrong though.

Yeah, I'm tipping a Madrid-Barca showdown, unless and until they don't draw each other in any of the K/O stages.

Supporting Benfica, Milan and Napoli btw. :D

The problem wasn't in yesterday's game, it was as Keano said, the whole group stage. We didn't have enough creativity, or enough drive, or enough something - the fact is, we simply didn't do ourselves justice. Sure, we controlled the game last night, but we weren't regularly cutting through them and making clear cut chances - and against a team like Basle, we should be doing that. As Keano said - the best player on the pitch was Giggsy and he's 37 years old!

Come January, we need to inject some midfield creativity into the team. At least the other bunch of muppets are out of the CL as well - they would've been more than unbearable if they'd progressed and we didn't.

How Rooney missed that chance, I'll never know and how that OG from the Basle defender didn't go in either - the whole game had that feeling that it wouldn't be our night. It should've been. I mean, what David de Gea was doing trying to clear that cross with his feet I'll never understand - what's wrong with his hands?? He's potentially a great keeper, but he's got to cut these mistakes out sooner rather than later if he wants to be a Utd player.

And it was typical of how the night went that Smalling got injured just before the goal, when chances are he would've gobbled that cross up for breakfast. Having said that, he was culpable for Basle's second goal - never mind if you risk kicking the player! Kick the ball (and player if necessary) into Mars in that situation - just make sure you play the ball first! It wasn't just his fault though - leading up to the second goal, we had at least three really good chances to clear the ball, and we kept giving it straight back to Basle!

United's early exit proves why it was a blunder not to buy a more established keeper like Given and a creative mid-fielder like Sneijder maybe (although i can understand the argument that he may not have been the best like-for-like replacement for Scholes).

City just learnt the hard way how difficult Champions League football can be, especially away from home. I expect them to be a serious force next year and in seasons to come.

Only Madrid or Munich can stop Barca from winning the CL IMO.

With United out, its hard to see to any of the other teams beat Madrid or Barca. Way too good for everyone else this season.

Also, Serie A is the best league in the world.

You sure about that Vaughany?

Yeah, I was a tad surprised myself following MV's comment.

Barcelona: 5W 1D; Madrid: 6 wins.

How's Serie A the best league in that case? Inter have been dreadful domestically, Napoli been entertaining but inconsistent. Only Milan look somewhat close to solid both domestically and in Europe.

Maybe he's saying that because there are 3 Italian clubs in the Last 16, which is more than any other country in it right now.

Napoli have been inconsistent in the Serie A but that is because I think they are concentrating on the Champions League. Lets see if their form picks up in the Serie A from now till February.

As for Milan, not sure if they can be considered solid in Europe. They can't even beat the likes of Plzen and Bate Borisov away from home(regardless of circumstances) while Barcelona smashed them both. Their only two wins came at home against those two minnows only. Furthermore, they were totally hopeless against Tottenham last season.

City may lack the experience in the Champions League as a team but to use that as an excuse for their failure to qualify for Last 16 is just absolutely pathetic!

That is correct. There has been a lot of talk about the decline of Italian football but the performances of Napoli are proof that its still very solid there. Milan are getting better as are Juve, so I think they are on the right track.

Unfortunately, there'll be only 3 teams from Italy in next season's CL. :/ Though performances as these only helps their case to retain 4 CL spots by 2014.

UEFA plays down Dinamo Zagreb-Lyon fears - ESPN Soccernet

Interesting.

A photo has emerged of a Dinamo Zagreb player emerging from a bookmaker, reportedly on Tuesday, while some suggestions on social networks have been made of a wink being directed by Domagoj Vida towards Lyon striker Batefembi Gomis after a goal.

Don't forget that the Dinamo Zagreb manager - Krunoslav Jurcic - got sacked after that game despite being top of their domestic league. Poor fella.

Weird boards nowadays! :facepalm

Given the form Munich and Napoli are in ATM, i dont think any other team other than probably Barca could have defeated them at home TBH. So i'm willing to cut City a lot of slack TBF.

Man City are not in form then?

Although City were poor in the first three games, you have to admit they had the hardest group to qualify from.

Like I said at the end of City's defeat to Bayern at the Alianz Arena, for them, getting KO would be a blessing disguise as it would let them focus on the league - which lets face it, is the number one priority.
