Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Just learnt that Italy will be faring only 3 clubs in next year's UEFA Champions League . Germany will be having 4 clubs instead . With that , the chances for Roma to make it in next season are getting slimmer now :(

I was just wondering about that. If that is the case, then shouldn't that only take place from next season onwards?

Doesn't Serie A lose its fourth Champions League spot from 2012 onwards?

Exactly . Sorry , my bad .

I dont like that. I personally think countries like England, Italy, Spain, Germany should always have 4 spots given the amount of strong clubs they have.

If you take out one to given to some weak league European nation, you would be making the champions league group stage weaker.

Even if Germany were to get 4 spots in the Champions League, I'm not too sure how long can they keep that since only Bayern Munich are like the only one that can get far enough in the competition.

Ha ye my mistake dont know why i typed Germany. Just ENG, SPA, ITA for 4.

While Germany, Holland, Portugal should be guaranteed 2-3.

Well Bayern have been a shambles this season in the Bundesliga. I think Dortmund could go far in Europe next season, they've been very impressive and look to be back among the big boys once again.

Dortmund have been brilliant. Remind me of Ajax of the mid 90s (the side that won the champions league) in the way that they play. I seriously hope Mainz get into Europe as well - would love to see Tuchel tested amongst the big boys.

Throw in Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen and Villarreal as well. Bayer Leverkusen have not played in the Champions League for quite some time already and Villarreal are now a different team than when they last appeared in the competition and they were under Manuel Pellegrini back then too. Can't remember when was the last time Napoli appeared in the Champions League though.

Don't forget the wonderfully attractive Udinese. Last time they were in the CL, Ronaldinho scored a great free-kick against them.

Well what if the three Italian teams qualify to the QFs and both the German clubs get knocked out? Does that also mean Italy lose their 4th spot in the 2012-13 season?

Personally I'd say that the average Italian club is still stronger than the average Bundesliga club. But as a league, the latter is way better. Dortmund have been a delight to watch this season and mighty Bayern have been punished whenever they have not played well. How it should be really.

Also the French League according to me is better than the Portuguese, and Dutch leagues.

Nope , in that case , 4 bonus points are awarded for each Italian club's presence in the QFs which would definitely overtake the German league's coefficient .

The Van Persie's sending off was pretty harsh given that there was only 1 second in between when the referee blew the whistle and him having a shot. But then again, he put himself in a dangerous position with his needless foul on Alves after getting too hot-headed in the first half.

What's even more baffling is that Arsenal did not even register a single shot all night!

Anyone looked at how they played after van Persie red card? 9-men defense. Didn't they know they need a goal to survive?
