The 6'fer

April 19th 2007 - After a splendid bacon sarney for Lunch, I came back on the field to bowl one of the best spells i've ever bowled. Now admittedly the pitch would allow anyone to take wickets but I think I bowled well enough to take the credit for my phenomonal six wicket haul. I struck in my first over after lunch; I managed trap Johann Louw LBW but in all fairness, it might have been going over the top. Tough beans though, that's the way it goes.

What a start after lunch; Louw becomes my 3rd victim.

Two balls later it all got even better. It seems that my excessive yorker practice in the nets had paid off as I bowl a rip-snorter that comprehensivley beats Silverwood. He swung wildy at his first ball and was lucky not to edge it but this rash shot made my adreneline rush and was happy to see how good he was at swinging like that at a yorker on leg-stump.

Crash-a-Bash; The beautiful sound of ball on stump is the second most evocative of all.

The third however, was my most satisfactory. Betts wanted to play aggressivley so I decided to dig the ball in short a few times and I managed to hit him in the rips twice. I then set up the double bluff by putting a man out on the hook so he would be expecting a short ball but instead I slipped in a slower ball on a full length, and a tentative forward defensive from Betts produed an edge which McCullum made no mistake in taking.

My best wicket to date; Betts is outfoxed by my bowling.

I then finished the innings off by clean bowling Owais Shah to give me my sixth wicket. Now unfortunatley there are no photographs for this particular wicket as my photographer was busy taking a leak in the nearby loo.

Not only was I immensley proud of taking 6 wickets on debut, but I was also happy at getting the wicket of two England batsmen in Strauss and Shah out. I'd also managed to help Lancashire bowl Middlesex out for a pawltry score and a lead of over 150 would be fantastic on this pitch. It's time for Loye and co to take centre stage now.

Not a good day at the office for Middlesex.

I'll cherish this particular bowling card forever.

Great bowling, even on a wet pitch its a brilliant proformance, nice simple presentation Matt :D

Maybe you'd be kind enough to return the comment? :p

Bleddy hell Matthew! Great bowling that, and you managed all that in 8 overs?! Not bad at all Matt! :D

Dump the English county cricket and come play some real competition in Aussie domestic. With my batting that bowling average will go from 2 to 200 in no time. ;)

I'd just like to explain that this story resolves soley around me so when i'm bowling i'll be autoplaying everybody else's overs and when batting i'll autoplay when i'm not batting.

Can you autoplay individual overs in '07?

Very much offtopic Crickhowell, but yes you can!

The Recognition

April 19th 2007 - After my incredible debut with the ball, I had no further impact on the game today. I wasn't bothered at all by me not batting because to be honest, I was nackered. I didn't realise how much bowling takes it's toll on you and now I realise why all-rounder's such as Flintoff and Kallis aren't always consistent with both fields and instead have one match were they perform brilliantly with the bat and another with the ball. I was determined not to be a one-trick pony but I had a lot to work on before I could achive that; Mainly my fitness. It needed improving big-time.

It was amazing walking off the field to a standing ovation after my performance. Admittedly the crowd was a 'one man and his dog' style of turnout but it was still nice to hear the appluase.

Chilts and Suttcliffe put on an opening stand that surpassed Middlesex's entire team total. This made me feel a lot better about my bowling as it showed that this pitch wasn't a complete horror show and my bowling was more down to my talent than the pitch it would seem. Chilts got out shortly after despite contributing a healthy 38 to the total wheras Sutcliffe later departed after getting a good nut on 58 falling lbw to Louw. Stuart Law fell late in the day but Fred managed to block out the final over so that he and Loye finished not out overnight. Despite the late wicket of Law, Lancashire were still in a very strong position. Tomorrow morning Flintoff and Loye would be batting with McCullum, Chapple, Cork and myself to come. A lead of over 200 would give us the chance of bowling Middlesex out without having to bat again which would be brilliant for us because not only would it set out an early marker for the rest of the season, but it would also give us a few days rest.

Before I went home for the night I was snagged by Tim Abraham to do an interview for Sky Sports News. Being the nervous, shy 16 year-old that I am I kept it brief, using the tired and tested cliches such as 'I just tried as hard as I could' and 'Just wanted to put the ball in good areas' and before I knew it the interview was over. "That was easy", I thought to myself, I hope all interviews are as simple as that throughout my career. Of course I knew that if I should ever play for England then i'd be expected to say a lot more in my interviews, but for now I wasn't getting ahead of myself.

A good looking batting card for our boys; I hope my name doen't have a 0 next to it tomorrow.

Johann Louw bowled decently and he really nipped the ball around towards the close. He deserved more than 2 wickets.

Cracking proformance by Matt Roberts, six wickets and having your wicket intact is a record i like to hear ;)
