Do you have your XP disc with you? If so insert it and go to start - Run - and type
sfc /scannow

Include the space after sfc.

Alternatively, download an updated version of the said file (try http://www.download.com) or get it off some friend's PC. Then replace the corrupt file in the system32 folder with the correct one (make sure you have admin privileges).

Ofcourse this will only work if you're able to start WinXP. Otherwise, cowburn's suggestion is the best bet.

Connections tray stops responding after I disconect from the internect by clicking disconnect and cannot connect again unless I restart, but if I unplug either the modem or phone line its still fine and I can reconnect again without hassle.

Seems like a hardware problem. Would you be able to check your IRQ and DMA assignments from the "Device Manager"

It could be something to do with your graphics card not functioning properly or not being securely plugged in properly, or just that your monitor is starting to give up. Just to test if its your monitor, plug it into someone elses PC or get another monitor to test on your PC.

3 possibilities most likely here are

1. Yor VGA cable to the monitor isnt pluged in correctly or the lead is faulty
2. You've set the colour balance on the monitor wrong
3. Your monitor is broken (Is it LCD or CRT?)

Okay, I can't find my modem in either of those lists.

Its usually listed as a COM2 or COM3 device. Do u know the name of ur modem btw. If u do then look for it in the device manager window. Then select it and go to properties-resources tab and look for any "conflicts" mentioned there or not.

Its a USB modem so I think that will prohibit it from being listed there, also there is no 'resources' tab for it. Seems I'll just have to live with the problem for now.

Oh its USB, tell me are u using lots of devices on USB like mouse, keyboards, webcam, etc. And is it a USB 1.1

usb wireless optical mouse, printer since the modem was installed no new harware has been used, and the problem appeared out of the blue. I think its a usb 1.1 not 100% sure on that.

Ok then try re-installing ur modem driver and check the results. Should be fixed.
