You have heard of in-swing,out-swing and reverse swing.Have u ever heard of
contrast swing?Yes it's the new development in bowling.England tried it against India.Contrast Swing has been discovered by Indian NASA Scientist
Dr. Rabindra Mehta. It's a new weapon for bowlers especially England bowlers bcoz they took the services of Troy Cooley.

Here is what I found on www.newindpress.com

In-swing, out-swing. NASA scientist discovers 'contrast swing'

Just as the mysteries of reverse swing have begun to unravel, a NASA scientist -- a schoolmate of Imran Khan -- has come up with a new theory of what he calls ''contrast'' swing.

Rabindra Mehta, who is also a sports aerodynamics consultant, says that England's fast bowlers in India have made the ball swing towards the smooth side after learning the new technique from former England and now Australia bowling coach Troy Cooley.

''Whenever an old ball swings, commentators label it reverse swing. Often though, it is not true reverse swing they are observing, but what I call 'contrast' swing,'' writes Mehta, who has spent 25 years studying how a cricket ball swings, in the April issue of the Wisden Cricketer.

''For conventional swing (away), the ball is released with the seam angled towards first slip or fine leg, spinning backwards along the seam and with the polished, smooth side facing the batsman. The ball will then swing in the same direction as the seam is pointing.''

''For true reverse swing the ball is released in the exact same way, except with the rough side facing the batsman. In this case, the ball will swing in the opposite direction to that of the seam. But, if a sharp contrast in surface roughness is generated on the ball, so that one side is smooth and the other rough, the ball can be made to 'contrast' swing with the seam positioned vertically (pointing straight down the pitch).''

Mehta, who studied at Worcester Royal Grammar School in the 1970s with an emerging Imran Khan, says that with contrast swing the ball will generally swing towards the rough side at lower bowling speeds (less than 70 mph) and towards the smooth side at higher speeds.

He says the main advantages of the new technique are that it is easier to produce, the ball can be swung both ways and the ball will swing even if the seam is completely flattened. On hard pitches, such as those on the subcontinent, the rough surface and flat seam come easily, so the key to successful contrast swing is to keep one side as smooth as possible with vigorous polishing.

Mehta also provides how to identify ''contrast'' swing. ''When the ball swings, make note of the seam position and swing direction. If they are the same, it is conventional swing; if opposed, it is reverse swing; and, if the seam is pointing straight down the pitch, it is contrast swing,'' he wrote

What does it do? I India it just seemed to reverse swing and that was about it.
No England bowlers also used Contrast Swing in India.

Yes I've heard about contrast swing. It relies on a straight seam, and that was about all I knew about it. I have the April issue of The Wisden Cricketer and it explains it a lot more clearly than most.

Ive heard of it as well. Being able to get late, unpredictable swing would be excellent

And surely every team needs experts to teach their bowlers Contrast Swing.

Really, oh!!!! India with a great difficulty found Munaf Patel for quickness and reverse swing!!! It has been a long time back Indians swung the ball around with pace!!!! There are gud bowlers like Pathan but took time to find a quick bowler like munaf!!!

So For India, whos going to try the contrast swing????????

Sir Garfield Sobers through Bumble asked me to mention that it either swings in or out that is all ;) :p

Intersting article there but I usually believe when it comes under the bat, no swing matters, it simply goes.:p
One thing is true that less than half of the commentators know about reverse-swing. They will just call anything as reverse and now they have another name "Contrast Swing" to babble on their knowledge.:D

I wouldn't listen to a word Bumble says myself. If Sobers, or any legend of the game for that matter, told him that Bradman was crap he'd believe them.

contrast swing

Looks like we have a new form of delivery that the English have already picked up on. It should be interesting seeing how this contrast swing works live in action. I'm sure you Indian/English viewers would have seen Hoggard do it.

AUSTRALIA'S pacemen will be exposed to a revolutionary new method of swing bowling in time for next summer's Ashes series. And they will have NASA to thank.

Incoming bowling coach Troy Cooley has worked with a US-based NASA scientist to uncover a type of swing bowling that, until now, had not been identified. As opposed to conventional and reverse swing, contrast swing is achieved by bowlers delivering the ball with a straight seam at varying paces. Put simply, when bowled at 105-115kph, the ball will swing towards the rough side. When bowled at speeds in excess of 115kph, the ball will swing to the smooth side.

This clearly presents a great challenge to batsmen, given that bowlers can now use an identical grip to move the ball both ways with just a subtle change in pace. Unlike the traditional methods of swing bowling, contrast swing does not require a bowler to angle the seam away from the batsman, and can be achieved even when the seam is "bashed in" - traditionally considered an impediment to swing bowling.

The good news for Australia is that Cooley will have an entire off-season to pass on his knowledge of contrast swing to the nation's fast bowlers before the Ashes. The bad news is he has already schooled England's quicks in the craft, several of whom used contrast swing to devastating effect in their recent Test series in India, most notably Matthew Hoggard.
