Cricket in China!

For cricketing purposes, Hong Kong is counted apart from China. They are an associate member of the ICC. There is some degree of political separation between mainland China and Hong Kong, just as there is between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

We shouldn't really look at countries when talking about ICC membership, as several ICC members are not countries in the true sense of the word. To name a few:

England
Scotland
Ireland
West Indies
Hong Kong
Cook Islands
Bermuda
Cayman Islands

Plus a few more.

As this thread has cropped up I've only just seen this.

How is the Republic of Ireland not a country in 'the true sense of the word', likewise Bermuda?

I have heard this before, on talksport iirc about some countries not being true countries, I agree with the WIndies, on the England, Scotland, etc, I'm unsure of tbh.

Andrew didnt say the Republic of Ireland in his post. Ireland isnt a country as Ireland cricket team covers both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.

Nah, they'll invade the World Cup. ;)

Some people on another forum seem to think it'd be a travesty if China come into cricket, solely due to their poor human rights record.

China are much better now. History is history. They probably deserve to play.
Although I do feel sorry for Hong Kong now. Workes so hard to be somewhat 'free' from China, got their own team, and now China is going to crush them :(

It would be great for cricket if china started playing cricket. then cricket would actually beat baseball in terms of marketing and population i think...

Possibly in population. But when you consider that the USA, Japan, Canada, and China all play baseball it may not have done. The other thing to take into account, is that USA, Japan and Canada are all highly developed countries and most of those populations can both afford to go and have access to baseball. Not entirely the case for India and Pakistans massive populations.
