it is close though, the opposite captain walked off the ground..so that their team doesn't get this kind of record against their name.

According to the scorecard, the opposition captain conceded the game at the end of the third day of the 4 day game
Well the play was conceded thats true... Sorry about that... but that was not the reason why Nimbalkar could not bat... Had the play not been conceded still Nimbalkar wouldn't have batted... Why??

Another clue: reason is cricket related.

I've checked every profile I could find of Nimbalkar, and can find no reference to anything other than the opposition captain conceding the game.

OK I will tell you.. Yes the match was conceded thats true... but even if the match was not conceded still Nimbalkar would not have batted on the final day as he was getting married on the final day's play and had to leave the night before... Kathaiwar decided to concede the match for the same reason as some players wanted to attend the wedding!! :)

This was in 1948 guys... nobody cared what happened in a first class cricket game in India.

I haven't seen this anywhere, can you post a link? and why you think nobody cared about what happened in first class cricket games?

Link

Also, My grandfather told me this. He attended Nimbalkar's wedding in Poona. Neither Nimbalkar nor anybody knew of Bradman's record at that time. It was only realized 2-3 days after that he indeed has come so close to Bradman's record. Bradman sent him a letter later when Bradman came to know about this.

At that time matches were not played with match referees or anything. The captains of the teams were rich Maharajas who played basically for fun. Competitiveness was there but nowher near the level we have it now in modern era.

hmmmm not sure about that 'source' Rahul, becuase nimbalkar's own interview shows a very different picture:

How come your source is reliable?? Nimbalkar tells here that he did not know the record was going to be broken while he was playing and he says in your source that he knew it while batting.

His wedding day was indeed the final day of the match. My Grandfather attented his wedding.

Did you read that link just then?

In that article you just posted the link to, he says...... "My captain Raja Gokhale requested the opposition to come on to the field for two overs, so that I could get the record."

We'll never know which is correct...after all he is 80! He surely has what really happened with what he wanted to happen mixed up. Or maybe one of them was translated by a translator who could speak Hindi/whatever his mother tongue was and screwed it up?

Well in 2 separate interviews he's said that the team was aware he was close to the record, so I think we can take that as confirmed now.
