Cameron White
Age 25 years 49 days

Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Legbreak googly
Fair-haired and level-headed, Cameron White has long seemed destined to play a significant role in Australia's future. Only the precise nature of that role has baffled his admirers. Nagging legspinner? Aggressive middle-order bat? Intuitive skipper? Or a bit of all three? The over-eager Shane Warne comparisons that festooned his first-class arrival have long since died away. Indeed White is a peculiarly unAustralian-style legspinner, tall and robust, relying on changes of pace and a handy wrong'un rather than prodigious turn or flight. He can even start a spell with an offspinner or quicker ball.

Aiden Blizzard

Age 24 years 101 days

Batting Left-hand bat
Bowling Left-arm medium
As if acting on a new year's resolution to cement his place in the Victoria side, Aiden Blizzard made himself the centre of attention on January 1, 2007. In his Twenty20 debut, Blizzard thumped 89 from 38 balls - his half-century took 23 deliveries - as he cleared the Adelaide Oval ropes eight times. There was no flukiness in his innings, which featured some of the hardest, cleanest hitting one could hope to see from a rookie-contracted player. He had made his FR Cup debut in 2005-06 and added five more games the next season, earning a senior contract for 2007-08. He again entertained in the Twenty20 with 145 runs at a strike-rate of 185, but in ten FR Cup games he passed fifty only once. He also made his first-class debut, posting 30 in his only innings against Tasmania. A punishing left-hander, Blizzard toured India and Sri Lanka with the Academy in 2004.

Adam Crosthwaite

A summer of disappointment ended with a glimmer of opportunity for Adam Crosthwaite, who was dumped as Victoria's first-class wicketkeeper at the start of 2007-08. The teenager Matthew Wade had transferred from Tasmania and his batting potential left Crosthwaite with only a full-time place in the limited-overs side. But in an eerily familiar turn of events, Wade was dropped and Crosthwaite recalled for the last two games of the season, including the final loss to New South Wales. The reverse had happened to Crosthwaite in 2005-06, when he was the incumbent and lost his position to Nathan Pilon for the decider. Crosthwaite's batting was a concern for Victoria - in 23 matches he had only managed one half-century - but his second-innings 50 and sharp glovework in the 2007-08 final justified his recall. He played every FR Cup game, averaging 19.14 and collecting 20 dismissals, and the battle with Wade is likely to continue in 2008-09.

AAron Finch
Age 21 years 324 days

Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Left-arm medium

A solidly-built, aggressive batsman from the country town of Colac in south-west Victoria, Finch made his first-class debut against the touring Indians in December 2007 but his only involvement was to catch Wasim Jaffer as rain ruined the game. His FR Cup debut was brief as well - he made 2 against Western Australia - but he had a boom year in club cricket. Playing for Geelong, Finch scored 1085 runs in Melbourne's Premier Cricket competition, just short of the all-time season record and confirming his progress after two winters at the Academy. The 2007 stint ended with a ban for not keeping his room tidy, but he showed he was maturing by losing weight during 2007-08, his first season with a full Victoria contract. Finch represented Australia at the Under-19 World Cup in 2006 and showed his power with 74 off 57 balls against South Africa.

Shane Harwood
Age 34 years 219 days

Playing role Bowler
Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Right-arm fast-medium

Following an eventful 2006-07 during which he made his Twenty20 international debut, Shane Harwood had a quieter and less productive summer in 2007-08. A serious shoulder injury threatened to derail his domestic campaign before it had started, and a groin problem later in the season continued his awful run with injuries. He finished with 19 Pura Cup wickets at 39.31 as Victoria became less reliant on him, with other fast men like Peter Siddle and Dirk Nannes continuing to develop. He remained a dangerous one-day bowler, when fit, collecting nine FR Cup victims at 23.66 from five games.

John Hastings

Age 22 years 337 days

Playing role All-rounder
Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Right-arm fast-medium
A tall allrounder who combines right-arm fast-medium bowling with strong lower-order batting, John Hastings made a solid start to his state career in 2007-08. His first one-day games brought limited batting opportunities but he impressed with the ball, taking three wickets in six deliveries on debut when he was asked to bowl at the death against Queensland. However, his first-class debut, against the touring Indians, was ruined by rain and any chances of more action in the short-term ended in January when he had surgery to have a pin inserted in a fractured finger. His first two names invited people to call him the Duke and New South Wales watched him ride into the Victorian sunset at the end of 2006-07 as he could not find a way into the Blues line-up. Hastings represented New South Wales in under-age and Second XI teams but like another Sydney allrounder, Jon Moss, who he effectively replaced in Victoria's plans, he decided a move south would bring more opportunities.

Playing role Lower middle order batsman

As the younger brother of Michael, David Hussey has copied his sibling's talent for ridiculous scoring in the English county competition. Also like Michael, Hussey has been forced to pile up mountains of runs in Australia before gaining the confidence of the national selectors. It took his first thousand-run season in 2007-08 - he made 1008 in the Pura Cup at 56 - before he was finally chosen for a tour, the ODI series in the West Indies in 2008, and earned his first Cricket Australia contract. Earlier in the season he made his Twenty20 international debut against India at the MCG and was not required to bat, but picked up a wicket with his handy offspin. Hussey was one of the big surprises in the Indian Premier League auction when Kolkata paid $625,000 to secure him - far more than the sums offered for his brother and Ricky Ponting.

Nick Jewell
Age 31 years 40 days

Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Left-arm medium

A relatively late bloomer, Nick Jewell has been the only man to play every Pura Cup game for Victoria in the past three seasons. His first century was 143 against New South Wales in the draw at Lismore in 2005-06 and he finished the campaign with 89 in the final loss to Queensland and the most runs for the state. The next year he was again one of the Bushrangers' best, scoring 742 at 41.22 and reaching triple-figures twice. The highlights were scarcer in 2007-08 - his career-best 188 against Queensland was the standout - but he still managed 694 runs at 34.70 and picked up 99 in the second innings of the final loss to New South Wales. Jewell is a mature, tall and patient batsman but his limited technique has stopped him forcing his way into Victoria's strong one-day line-up. One of the most recent men to play first-class cricket and AFL football - Jewell played one game for Richmond in 1997 - he is also the son of Tony Jewell, the former Richmond footballer.

Andrew McDonald
Age 27 years 113 days

Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Right-arm fast-medium
The allrounder Andrew McDonald had another consistent season in 2007-08 after enjoying a breakthrough campaign the previous summer. He helped Victoria reach the Pura Cup final with 545 runs at 49.54 combined with 13 wickets at 37.92. McDonald added his second first-class century when he led a fightback with 139 against South Australia at the Junction Oval, after reaching triple-figures for the first time in 2006-07. That season he was exceptional, topping Victoria's Pura Cup wicket tally and finishing second to Brad Hodge in their batting averages. He came into the season with one first-class half-century; he added six more and averaged 57.69. His 29 dismissals were invaluable in an injury-ravaged Bushrangers attack and his 6 for 34 against Queensland was a career-best. His red hair and surname inevitably invited the nickname Ronnie, but there was no clowning around from McDonald in 2006-07, when he became only the fifth player in Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup history to make 750 runs and take 25 wickets in a season. Not surprisingly, he was Victoria's Pura Cup Player of the Year and earned a part-time Academy place for 2007, and he was picked in the Australia A squad to tour Pakistan in September but had to pull out due to a shoulder injury. A more satisfying call-up came when he was a surprise selection for the Sydney Test in 2008-09 after Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson succumbed to injuries. His solid debut included three wickets and the continued absence of Symonds allowed McDonald to win a place on the return tour of South Africa.

Bryce McGain

Age 36 years 195 days

Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Legbreak googly
At the age of 35, Bryce McGain went from IT worker to professional cricketer and he did it with such success that within a year he was part of Australia's Test squad to tour India. The call-up came as Australia searched the country for their next long-term spinner and McGain's promising effort during Australia A's rain-affected trip to India helped his cause. He embarked on the trip as the No. 1 spinner and was almost certain to make his debut but was forced home due to an unusual injury to the tendons in his right armpit. Surgery was required but despite his advanced age, McGain did not give up on his Test dream. When he returned to state action in January 2009, he managed a timely five-wicket Sheffield Shield haul that earned him a place on the Test tour of South Africa.

Clint McKay
Age 25 years 227 days

Playing role Bowler
Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Right-arm fast-medium
Clint McKay had to wait until he had lost his Cricket Victoria contract before making his debut for the state, getting his chance in November 2006 when several of Victoria's fast bowlers were struck down with injuries. A 194cm fast-medium bowler and useful lower-order batsman, McKay's form vanished with his contract after a disappointing 2005-06. In an effort to get in shape, he trained with the Coburg VFL team and shed about nine kilograms. Three first-class games and six one-dayers came in his debut season, when the highlight was grabbing 4 for 42 in the Pura Cup match against Queensland and removing the top three batsmen in ten balls.

Lloyd Marsh

Age 26 years 310 days

Batting Left-hand bat
Bowling Right-arm offbreak

Lloyd Mash slipped down the Victoria pecking order in 2007-08, making only three Pura Cup appearances for 106 runs at 17.66. The arrival of Chris Rogers for 2008-09 means his first-class opportunities could become even rarer. In 2006-07 he was the preferred opening partner for Nick Jewell for most of the summer but four half-centuries and an average of 26 was a disappointing return, and he lost his spot for the last match. He could not post his maiden century despite promising efforts of 86 and 88, and he ended up on the fringes following an impressive debut summer in 2005-06. He began that season without a Cricket Victoria contract and finished with 505 Pura Cup runs and a safe top-order seat. A strong left-hander, Mash was called up for his first-class debut against the West Indians and started with a steady 44. When a Twenty20 practice game was arranged he planted Dwayne Bravo for four sixes in a 12-ball cameo of 32. Basing his game around a simple technique, Mash appeared in eight Pura Cup games that season, beginning with 83 against Queensland at the Gabba and 94 against South Australia. Mash, who began his career aged five at Eltham and spent seven years in the under-12s, will be desperate for a productive 2008-09 to ensure he does not disappear from Victoria's radar.

Darren Pattinson

Age 29 years 65 days

Playing role Bowler
Batting Right-hand bat

After years of toiling away for Dandenong in Melbourne's club cricket, higher honours appeared to have permanently eluded Darren Pattinson until, in July 2008, he was sensationally plucked from obscurity to make his Test debut for the land of his birth, England, against South Africa at Headingley. It was a bewilderingly rapid promotion for a man who had played only 11 first-class matches in his entire career, and who at the time was only two weeks shy of his 29th birthday. That weekend, he had been planning to take his kids to Alton Towers. However, an injury to Ryan Sidebottom - and doubts about the enduring effectiveness of Matthew Hoggard - led England's selectors to trawl the shires for a tall and accurate new-ball bowler who could be relied upon to hit the deck and extract some swing at a good pace. Pattinson's season stats, 29 wickets at 20.86 for Nottinghamshire, brooked no argument, although the fact that he had not been a permanent resident in England since leaving his hometown of Grimsby at the age of six might have counted against him. As it turned out, he performed creditably with 2 for 95 in South Africa's first innings, but England's ten-wicket drubbing meant he vanished from view almost as quickly as he had risen in the first place. That rise had begun in November 2006 when a spate of injuries struck down Victoria's frontline fast bowlers. At 27, the uncontracted Pattinson made his Pura Cup, limited-overs and Twenty20 debuts, and his job as a roof-tiler took a backseat as he claimed 4 for 87 in his maiden first-class match against South Australia. His efforts earned him a state contract for 2007-08, and though he was only used twice in Pura Cup games in his second season, Pattinson was recommended to Nottinghamshire by his colleague, David Hussey. The rest quickly passed into

An allrounder who is a left-hand batsman and bowls right-arm fast-medium, James Pattinson has been included in Australia's squad for the Under-19 World Cup in 2008. Pattinson was one of three players included in the Academy's development squad in 2007 and he joined his brother, Darren, in the Victoria Bushrangers squad for the 2007-08 season.

Chris Rogers

Age 31 years 36 days

Playing role Opening batsman
Batting Left-hand bat
Bowling Legbreak googly
Chris Rogers holds the rare record of scoring a double-century against his own country. Playing for Leicestershire in 2005, Rogers opened the batting against the Australians and posted 56 and 219 despite chat from Matthew Hayden, who said he should get out to benefit the national team. In 2007-08 he took Hayden's Test place when the Queenslander was injured for the third game against India in Perth. Rogers scored 4 and 15 and by the end of the summer had lost his Cricket Australia contract and left Western Australia for Victoria. He was frustrated at constantly being left out of the Warriors' one-day side and his Pura Cup form was down slightly, although his output of 744 runs at 43.76 was still respectable.

Mathew Wade
Age 20 years 285 days

Batting Left-hand bat

Matthew Wade walked straight into Victoria's Pura Cup team after transferring from Tasmania in the 2007 off-season and immediately made an impact, scoring 83 and pouching six catches in his first-class debut. Wade was only 19 at the time but he had already spent a winter at the Academy and had been part of Australia's Under-19 World Cup squad in 2005-06. His batting potential was the reason he leap-frogged the incumbent wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite and he finished the season with 335 runs at 27.91, and a top score of 95 against his former state. His glovework was adequate but a lack of runs late in the season led to him losing his spot in favour of Crosthwaite for the last two games, including the Pura Cup final. A talented left-hand batsman capable of long stays at the crease, Wade was also a skilled Australian Rules footballer and could have pursued an AFL career. His only match for Tasmania was a one-day game in 2006-07 when he played as a specialist batsman, and the presence of the established wicketkeepers Sean Clingeleffer and Tim Paine prompted his move to the mainland.

Damien Wright

Age 33 years 73 days

Batting Right-hand bat
Bowling Right-arm fast-medium

After managing only two first-class games in 2005-06 because of back stress fractures, Damien Wright celebrated his return in style the following summer when he bowled Tasmania to their first Pura Cup title. Wright gave New South Wales no chance of a face-saving draw, taking 5 for 13 on the final day to seal the win. He had already been instrumental in setting up the one-sided finish - he collected 3 for 38 in the first innings and made vital batting contributions of 67 and 47. He only played five matches for the season but his 18 victims at 23.16 put him within reach of the state's all-time Sheffield-Shield/Pura Cup record. It was a mark that would remain out of the grasp of Wright, who was sidelined throughout 2007-08 with injuries and signed with Victoria for the 2008-09 campaign.
