South Africa Cricket News: Cricket South Africa to appoint black African selector | ESPN Cricinfo

If they're going to appoint a black selector then Ntini should be the LAST person they consider. Here's why. Ntini loves to play the race card. He accused Mickey Arthur of being a racist when he was dropped from the team and his recent comments saying that Thami Tsolekile would have played for the national team if he was white. The fact is Tsolekile has an average record at best and if he was white nobody would have a clue who he even was. It's clear that Ntini distinctly sees cricketers as black and white and a selector needs to see the players as a batsmen and as human beings, not as a race. The things that Ntini has said causes racial disharmony and there is no way that somebody with those attributes should be a national selector.

Now, I'm all for trying to develop cricket amongst the black african population, but choosing a black selector is gonna do bugger all. If you want more black africans in the team then you have to work your way up from grassroots levels. Develop cricket in black african communities, get them playing, get them involved in the sport and eventually the talent will come through.

^^

Ye basically. Plus also as a black/mixed raced person myself i'm always fascinated and sometimes dumbfounded as to how s african's categorize their black/coloured people.

The reporter says: "In Perth, South Africa played their 200th Test since readmission but in that time, only five black Africans have represented the country. Of those, Ntini played 101 Tests but the other four: Mfuneko Ngam, Monde Zondeki, Tsolekile and Lonwabo Tsotsobe have less than 20 between them and South Africa have not fielded a single black African in Test cricket in the past year."

Now unless i'm confused about my own black people, then surely omar henry who played tests in 1992, philander, duminny, ashwell prince also are black. They are just lighter skin than most. And of course Ntini isn't exactly of dark complexion either. Strange statement.

I really think you got Ntini wrong. He does not play the race card. After all this is a guy who took Brain McMillan as his mentor and role model and till up today has kept his discipline like Big Mac told him. Ntini is not there because of some political issue he is there because of that discipline.

Then South Africa always had selectors of other color. Sports Ministers and the Convener of selectors were of other color.

Players of color in the current South African squad

Amla
Philander
Peterson
R. Pieterson
I. Tahir

JP Duminy - injured

White players

Smith
Kallis
De Villiers
Faf Du Plessis
Steyn
Morkel

If you look at the demographics and the amount of players playing it and the percentage of white and players of other color playing it then that is already huge because it would be 4/11.

But we should not mention race at all. Clearly all those top names showed let things go its natural way and the players will come through. That will always be the case. Look at what happened to poor Ontong vs Duminny. One was in playing due to a quota and the other on merit. One scored 10 runs total in the test and the other 218 on debut.

ANd I agree totally. Merritt is the way to go even the players of other color said that is the only way it should be. But some said they would not say no playing for their even if they know they are not good enough. But I think no matter what color anyone will grab the chance its just human nature.

But quota system and affirmative action is just a form of reverse racism. You can't make up for the past in sport. Rather look to the future. But there is some people with huge grudges in the highest level of the government and they are out to make a innocent generation pay for the mistakes of others unfortunately.

Now you guys are missing the point here, Ntini and Tsotsobe are black Africans, even their names are of African heritage as compared to the Ashwells and Peterson's. This is good they want to involve the African population in the game but it shouldnt be by placing a black selector on board. Some irate member posted of Tahir/Amla, theyre not black, but of Indian descent hence the reporter was correct in stating that the SA have not fielded a single black African in the last year!

Those others are considered by the Politicos along with amla and tahir as "Coloured" not black.;)

Ntini as a selector is a very bad idea. He likes to play the race card when things don't go his way. Great player but do not want him involved in upper management decisions.

The reason why there hasn't been a African Black player in the side is because currently there isn't anyone good enough.

Ha crazy stuff that. All this time i was thinking that those s africa politico's would be happen now with so much quality black/coloured players like amla, duminy, the peterson duo, tahir (b4 his struggles in australia), philander earning a place on merit.

Now to understand for some strange reason they want a certain "African black" player to be in the team :facepalm. Its pretty clear now why tsokelie (spell check) has been pushed in the team, when he clearly isn't a better keeper replacement for boucher than de cock, kuhn or vilas.
