First impressions, of the demo, 2 matches on normal, 2 on easy.
Normal was quite tricky, but I hadn't got used to my gamepads controls, which are very different when mapped with the on screen controls.
Tools
This is my favourite part of the game. I think the 3D batting spider looks absolutely gorgeous. The pitch map, and all it's variants look good. This part of the game feels like a TV broadcast, and it looks good.
Batting
Varied from Normal to Easy quite alot. On Easy you can pretty much do what you want. One thing I havent' tested is back foot shots, and this is because the back foot shot hasn't got a key on my pad, whereas front foot has. The shots look good most of the time, it is more of a challenge on Normal. The bowlers were mixing it up nicely.
Bowling
Probably the best ever bowling set-up on a cricket game. You actually want to bowl, which makes a change. The controls feel good, trying to get that quicker ball without over-stepping is quite a challenge. Bowling speeds still seemed skewiff. Johnson was bowling mid 90s, Flintoff about 87mph. I wasn't focusing too hard on these on other Aussie bowlers.
Fielding
The catching system is fantastic, I will try and grab a screen shot of it after lunch. I took a catch with Colly off of Flintoff to dismiss Katich. One handed to his right, I had plenty of time to take the catch in the Covers. Throwing system seems slightly random, anyone else feel that when you throw to an end, you then get the flashing still happen at either end?
Running
Definitely needs improving. On Normal it was far worse than easy, there isn't a good balance between aggressive running and suicidal running. In the 4 games, I had 2 run outs where the batsman turned whilst the ball was in the hands of the fielder/keeper by the stumps. Disappointing.
Graphics
I think they look quite good, Lord's looks nice, the animations of the bowlers don't feel too smooth, but then, graphics is quite a minor part of the game experience.
Replays
The slow-mo replay I got of a 6, looked brilliant. Lovely transition of ball on and off of the bat, no jerking whatsoever. Other replays look bad. Either camera is too far out, or the action isn't slowed down enough for you to tell where the ball is.
It is only a tiny portion of the game, but overall, I think it's looking positive. The key for me, in this becoming a very good cricket game is based on two things.
1) Running between the wickets, hopefully fixed between demo and master builds. If not, I hope TG & Codies will provide us with a patch to rectify this, even if it takes them a month or two to get it right, it is definitely needed.
2) As ever, pacing of an innings during a proper game. I'm not going to make any kind of score until I've played the full game. That will be ultimate test, in playing a test match and getting realistic pacing of the innings by the AI.
I'd love to say "improve the replays" as another option, but I fear that may be beyond what could go in to a patch.
So far, I'm impressed, but I'm also cautious of this being a false dawn when we get the full game.
Included a piccie of the catch I mentioned. That was on the replay, thus no catching system.
