Mumbai Indians win a cliff Hanger.
Well, the first of the ongoing 4 matches' was successfully held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. According to reports, it was normal pitch and it evenly supported both the bowlers and batsmen.
It was Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the first ever IPL FCC toss and the skipper Ganguly opted to field first. The decision amazed many people but Ajit Agarkar and Dinda proved that it was a good decision. They removed the openers (Jayasuriya and Sachin) early and then there was a partnership betweem Duminy and Bravo. And after adding 60 odd runs to their partnership, Duminy fell in Spin trickster Mendis' trap. Then, Pinal Shah tried his good but fell to Dinda, But Abhishek Nayar played a good role in the tail by adding 35 crucial runs. Dhawan added 15, Harbhajan added 17 Zaheer added 2 runs and Malinga came up with unexpected blast of 20 runs.
Kolkata Bowlers Dinda and Agarkar took 4 each and Mendis took 2. Rest were wicketless. 243 was not a great score but they had to satisfy with that.
Then, the expectations from crowd was great but KKR's batting failed like a wrecked ship. 31 was the highest individual score and it came off Ajantha Mendis' bat, Hodge fell at 3, Gayle at 4, Ganguly at 9, Laxmi Ratan at 13, Arindam Ghosh at 24, Dababrata Das at 27, McCullum at 25, Agarkar at 15, Ishant at 14, Dinda at 14. Mendis remained at unbeaten 31.
Total crowd was astonished as their home team fell for 188.
Then, Kolkata Knight Riders' Ishant reminded Mumbai the KKR anthem "Korbo Lorbo Morbo" and he was too hot to handle. Jayasuriya and Tendulkar started off the innings with great defensive strokes but their strategy came to an end when Ishant Sharma was handed the ball. Both fell to Ishant in the same over and Duminy played a good knock. But, Dwayne Bravo went back to pavilion for a duck. Pinal Shah even turned out to be a duck and when he fell, total Kolkata Crowd cheered loudly for Ganguly as he took the wicket.Abhiskeh Nayar and Shikar Dhawan played a crucial innings and rescued Mumbai Indians, And Harbhajan added some 21 crucial runs and rest scored some scored below 15.
With a target of 241, Kolkata Knight Riders started well, playing some defensive strokes. a First Wicket partnership of 39 kept up the hopes of KKR's win. But Hidge falling very next ball made them frustrate. Ganguly added 22 crucial runs and fell in Zaheer's trap. Shukla and Arindam Ghosh fell early but Debabrata Das was pinned at crease. Brendon McCullum, Ajit Agarkar were visitors to the pitch and Debabrata was host. But Ishant Sharma walked in and he proved that he even was a host at crease. Both Came up with 72 and 41 respectively and when Shahrukh decided that they were going to win, Ishant fell to Dwayne Bravo.. With two wickets in hand, they had 8 runs to get a victory. It was Debabrata Das on strike and everyone were hoping for him to win a match for KKR. But he replied No when he fell in the very first ball. Then came in first innings hero, Ajantha Mendis, who fell in the Trap of JP Dumini for a duck, ensuring a win for Mumbai Indians.
Abhishek Nayar, who scored 35 in the first Innings and 33 in the second innings with 2 wickets in first innings and a wicket in second was handed the Man of the match award.
