This looks like that magic hat to keep pulling bunnies, features keep coming out. Have made my mind to take off on Dec 15! Those sliders which was made possible by Franco in DBC14, now officially implemented in DBC17. One of the finest examples of listening to people's wish and implementing it.

One, we saw that the custom field setup screen had generic numbers assigned to the fielders. So does that mean the game automatically chooses the best fielder for the said position or we still have control over that?

When you create a field you order the positions, then the players will be automatically placed in order of priority by skill level in that position.

Steam allows you to download the games as soon as the game is released. It doesn't really matter if we pre-order the game or not. It is guaranteed that we'll get a steam copy unlike physical copy that needs to be pre-orders in stores.

You won't need to preorder for steam. As it will be available straight away... its not like steam will "sell out" of copies.
