ING Cup ? Game 3
Victorian Bushrangers Vs Tasmania Tigers
The MCG, Melbourne
14th November 2006

After smashing my way to a maiden one day 50 and being buggered after pumping blood for half the innings the last thing i wanted was for Tony Greig to be waiting for me at the boundary to say a few words to the cameras but that's exacly what happend

Greig: I have just pulled Jesse Slatter aside for a moment who has just smashed the Victorians to a defendable total. Slats how do you feel?

Slatter: Yeah better that I?ve made a few. I can assure you I wasn?t feeling to good at 6/150 or whatever it was.

Greig: Well Slats we haven?t seen someone do that for a while. What happened out there?

Slatter: Im not to sure myself. The adrenalin started pumping and I just kept swinging.

Greig: What was your plan for the last 10 overs

Slatter: Me and Nath were talking it over and we didn?t want to start smashing it until about 3 or 4 overs because we just didn?t have the wickets in hand but when he got out I had to try and reassess the situation and in the end it just came down to hit out or get out.

Greig: And 234 is it enough?

Slatter: We?ll have to wait and see wont we. You never know in cricket im sure at one stage Tasmania would have thought they would be on a plane home by now but you just never know.

Greig: There an alright side aren?t they the Tasmanians

Slatter: Bloody oath. I don?t think they were up the top of anyone?s list at the start of the season but no they are right up with the best of us now.

Greig: This one is such a crucial game what does it feel like to get the Bushrangers in with a chance they otherwise wouldn?t have had?

Slatter: It?s great to score runs on any day but if it?s not for the winning side then it doesn?t count for anything. I cant get to far ahead of myself now it?s great that I have some runs but we have to concentrate on winning the game now.

Greig: Well your breathing quite heavily Slats I?ll let you go catch your breath and good luck with your run defence

Slatter: Thanks Tony. Cheers

Well done on your maiden one-day fifty!

Great work.

Can't wait to see if the Tigers can win this. (I hope not)

The MCG was the same picture when the Bushrangers came back out as it was when they went in for the change of innings. The overcast sky?s might just provide enough for Lewis and Denton to take advantage in the opening overs.

The Tigers haven't scored alot of runs but have kept wickets in hand

Slow going for the Tasmania Tigers but the big difference is they have stayed patient throughout the innings despite the required run rate growing bigger. Birt and skipper Cox got the visitors through the opening overs both with strike rates of 50 before Moss came on in the middle overs and took the wicket of Cox (31) thanks to a handy catch from Slatter and closely following was Birt (39) who hit a high ball hat was caught by Lewis off the White leg spin.

Coxy for some reason was never even considered for Australia
but played a vital opening role of 31 however it was slow going

From then on it has been Dighton and former Australia one day wonder Michael Bevan. We have seen Bevo mastermind run chases before and it is no doubt he is a key player for the Tasmanians at this point who have 14 overs remaining. It is now that skipper Cameron White has chosen to throw the ball to Slatter for the first time and with it he said ?Get us home just like you did back at the GABBA son.?

The worm favours Victoria massivly but dont rule out a comeback with wickets in hand

Tasmania Tigers 2/129
Run Rate 3.58
Required 7.57

36 overs

Dighton 20(41)*
Bevan 30(41)*

Lewis 0/22
Denton 0/14
White 1/30
Wise 0/32
Hodge 0/16
Moss 1/11

Tasmania Tigers require 106 runs from 84 balls

Tasmania are well behind the required run rate at the moment but with time and wickets in hand they can still get back in it with a few quick fire innings here. Realistically the Tigers should be on top in this game but a flashy innings from Slatter and valuable runs from Pilon see?s Victoria on top here. Another chance presents itself for Slatter to take this game by the neck with the ball but can he overcome the class and hitting of the Tasmanians.

The writing is on the wall for Bevan and Dighton who now have to take Slatter and fellow Victorians around the park in these final 14 overs to get close to victory.

In the following over Mick Lewis broke through Michael Bevan and had him out lofting to long on. Bevo just didn?t quite get hold of it and suffers a real set back having guided so many teams home in this type of situation. Is Bevo past his best days?

10 overs to go and Tasmania well behind the run rate but with 2 batsman at the crease that like to have a hit at the best of times. Can Slatter keep them from blowing the game open and taking an unlikely victory. The mometum has switched a number of times in this game so who knows what can happen?

Tasmania Tigers 3/150
Run Rate 3.75
Required 8.50

40 overs

Dighton 28(50)*
Di Venuto 3(7)*

Lewis 1/31
Denton 0/14
White 1/30
Wise 0/32
Hodge 0/16
Moss 1/11
Slatter 0/9

Tasmania Tigers require 85 runs from 60 balls

Good luck with this game! I think if you bowl tight enough you will win.

EDIT: Good first 2 overs!

With the Tasmanians requiring over 8 an over any comeback will take a lot of doing with only 60 balls remaining in the innings. There is a lot of encouragement going around the field for the Victorians who look like staring off their season with a 2-1 record and a good chance at glory this season.

A dropped catch in the over from Slatters bowling. Even the most precise of field placing doesn?t guarantee wickets, as catches still need to be taken. Will this be the kick Dighton needs to move on from 36 to a bigger score quicker? Of all people to drop a catch at this moment it had to be Cameron White who has been giving the team a moral boost for the past few days!

Tasmania Tigers 3/179
Run Rate 3.97
Required 11.20

45 overs

Dighton 44(66)*
Di Venuto 16(21)*

Time is running extremely low for the Tasmanians now who are up against the odds and don?t look like winning this one now. The Victorian bowling has been spot on all the way through this innings and the Tigers have been without an answer for just as long. However there does seem to be some trouble in paradise as the skipper Cameron White?s apology was rejected between overs by Slatter.

The game now seems to have completely deserted the Tasmanians who have missed countless opportunities in this game and deserve what they get here. Gerard Denton had a big say in the next over taking the wickets of Di Venuto and Kremerskothen to almost be the end of the matter. 43 required off 2 overs is an almost impossible task with Slatter coming into bowl.

A costly over for Slatter but he had safety in knowing he wasn?t going to be taken off after White dropped that catch. 26 runs off the last over was to much to ask of the Tasmanians who finally went down but put up a good fight. A final over hat trick for Mick Lewis was a special achievement for the experienced fast bowler as he picked up the wickets with his first 3 balls to finish with 4 for 46

Victorian Bushrangers Win By 13 Runs

A close call for man of the match which sore Jon Moss pip Slatter at the post as he walked away with 59 and 1/11 where as Slatter made an unbeaten 58* and took 0/48

It?s always good to wake up in your own bed the day after a match and not one of those cheap second rate hotel beds but hey, that?s the luxury of playing for your home state. However after beating the Tasmanians in yesterdays ING Cup match the attention quickly turns to the next match which is against the in breeds in the Pura Cup over at Hobart next Tuesday.

A cheap hotel bed we players see on tour

Poor planning by the fixture makers at Cricket Australia will see us play our next Pura Cup game followed the next day by an ING Cup game back home at the MCG against a struggling NSW Blues side. It will be no easy to task to get up the next morning after flying back from Hobart and take part in the one day game and as a result the sides may have to be changed and players rested.

What was Sunderland thinking when he checked the fixtures?

Our next training session is set for Friday after the hierarchy at the Bushrangers has decided to award two days rest and relaxation. Maybe I?ll even start talking to Cameron White again after he dropped that catch to give Dighton a second chance when the game still wasn?t decided. Luckily I had support from the other end to get rid of him otherwise young Cameron would have looked very average as the leader of a top ranked state cricket team. Cameron and myself had a brief chat after the game just so I could let him know that I had put the incident behind me and we could still be friends. The convocation went something like this.

White -?Sorry about that catch mate but I guess sometimes they just don?t stick hey mate. Still mates?

Slatter ? ?**** off?

Whitey after Slatter excepts his apology

Im looking forward to meting the Tasmanians this time in the longer form of the game as they have been a real force early on this season as they sit 2 from 2 and on 12 points much like we do.
