Pura Cup ? Game 3
Tasmania Tigers Vs Victorian Bushrangers
Bellerive Oval, Hobart
21st November 2006
There is very little to gain from 4 balls until the end of the day but of course I had confidence in getting through it with Brad Hodge who has just knocked up a hundred.
Hodgey and my good self came out at the start of day three under orders from Cameron White to get us 300 in front of the Tasmanians in relatively good time as this was the declaration target. Hodgey was confident of picking up where he left off but I wasn?t to sure. In matches like these there?s always some clown that misses out on the run fest and I had the suspicion that this was going to be me.
A Slatter trademark flick off the pads got me off the mark in this innings, which is always nice. It?s funny how a batsman can get some much relief out of moving from 0 to 1 but I guess that?s the trick your mind can play on you in all levels of the game.
A shaky start is a batsman?s nightmare but that?s what the game had in store for me today. My playing and missing had the Tasmanian?s right on my case from the word go and the talk didn?t just die off after a couple of overs like I hoped it would. Comments like ?Didn?t your bat come with a manual? and ?This kid couldn?t make runs in under 14?s? were just a sample of the abuse I was copping from the inbred?s. Usually it get?s better with the time you spend at the crease but the Tigers were only fired up after I escaped a n extremely close shout for LBW which for some reason was given not out. In most of these situations you just look at your feet hoping the umpire doesn?t put the finger up and this time he didn?t.
Michael Bevan is a tricky kind of bowler that has a knack for taking wickets and will quickly take advantage of any batsman that?s willing to underestimate him just like I did but hey, Im still in. Deep down the umpire knew he?d made a mistake and after Bevo hit me on the thigh guard in his next over after a big spinner pitch on middle and turned at me and the finger went up almost before a halfhearted appeal did.
The boys in the dressing room could sense that I was fuming from being triggered and the room clear out out pretty quickly as I smashed my bat against the wall in disgust at the poor excuse for umpires the game has today. Watching others make the most of there opportunity doesn?t help either as Cameron White and Nathan Pilon on debut shared a handy partnership before the declaration came.

The boys ran out onto the field so high in confidence our heads almost didn?t fit through the door on the way out onto Bellerive Oval. And why not because it?s not everyday that you get to dominate a team so heavily throughout the match. However the celebrations cant start to early with overcast sky?s tipped for tomorrow, which could bring the match saving rain the Tigers need.
Shane Harwood added insult to injury when he dismissed Jamie Cox the skipper of Tassie for 5 after getting through his defence and disturbing the timber. The big surprise came when Cameron White turned to me after just 15 overs and said ?I want to see what you can do while the ball is still new Slats so warm up mate.? There are just 9 miutes remaining before tea on day 3 so the skipper is obviously testing me out after failing with the bat.

Slats is on early for a change and what a perfect time for him to prove himself as the Bushrangers really have nothing to lose now. A massive lead means that the draw is Tasmania?s best option now but can they bat for long enough? The weather is looking ok at the moment without any signs of rain as yet.
I?d like to think batsman die a little inside when they see me at the top of my run but that?s probably not to realistic. Travis Birt and Michael Dighton are the batsman with the Tigers one wicket down and a long way to go with 10 minutes before tea.
I just got the one over in before the bails were removed for tea and the good spirit amongst the team was understandable around the tea table as the ghetto blaster was turned up full pelt and I was given all the encouragement needed to get out and take some wickets.
Im sure the Tasmanian?s would have been doing the rain dance at tea and dreading the moment the umpires walked in their dressing room and said ?let?s get back out there.? On the other side we were keen of course to get this show over with when we got back out on Bellerive Oval.
Just two ball?s into the session and I picked up the much needed wicket of Travis Birt who has been in form so far this season. Michael Bevan is the new man in and will prove a very difficult wicket to remove.
After my fifth over Whitey approached me and said ?I want to keep you fresh for another spell later Slats so im taking you off. Your bowling well mate keep working hard.? The Tigers are still a long way even making the Victorians bat again and an hour and a half tonight and then another day of cricket still to be played it?s hard to image anything else then a Victorians win.
