Pre Match

Brendan Julian:
Hello and welcome to the WACA where the Warriors play the Bushrangers in the season opener for both teams. Along side me is former Australian captain Alan Border. How are you today AB?

Allan Border:
Yeah good thanks BJ I think we?re in for a close contest here today.

BJ:
I?ll have to agree with you there but before we preview this match let?s have a look at some of the other matches that have been played this week.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ford Ranger Cup ? The GABBA

Queensland Bulls - 5/295 off 50 Overs
(Hopes 68, Love 66, Hilfenhaus 2/72)

Tasmania Tigers ? 6/264 off 50 Overs
(Bevan 58, Paine 49, Bichel 2/73)

Queensland win by 31 runs
MOTM ? Martin Love

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pura Cup Match ? The GABBA

Tasmania Tigers 1st Innings ? 282
(Di Venuto 78, Bevan 56, Johnson 4/86, 3/66 Bichel)

Queensland Bulls 1st Innings - 9/600

Tasmania Tigers 2nd Innings - 5/295
(Bevan 92, Dighton 77, Johnson 2/68)

Match Drawn
MOTM ? Michael Bevan

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AB:
Two very strong performances there for the Queensland Bulls but were unlucky not to pick up the 6 points in the longer form of the game with Tasmania playing it out for a draw. The only real positive to draw out of that for Tasmania is Michael Bevan hitting some form with a 50 in each innings.

BJ:
Yeah some super cricket from the Bulls but it just goes to show how much of a road that pitch is up at the GABBA.

AB:
Yes it is fast becoming the quickest pitch in Australia edging out this ground here, The WACA.

BJ:
Alright well we?ll turn our attention to today?s game and we?ll start by looking at the Victorians stats against Western Australia.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

AB:
Wow yeah that really tells the story doesn?t it. Victoria have only ever won once up here against Western Australia so they will be desperate to get number two on the board although you cant really see it happening.

BJ:
Yeah that?s a very powerful stat isn?t it. Just one win in 37 attempts will probably mean that Victoria start there season with a loss today unless they can pull something special out of the bag.

AB:
For me the Victorians have to win the toss and bat and get a total of 300 to have a chance of winning this one as the Warriors have a massive batting line-up and a solid pace attack that will worry the Vic?s top order.

BJ:
Mark Waugh is down in the centre for the pitch report so let?s join him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mark Waugh:
Thanks BJ, This is a very nice track as is the usual for a WACA pitch. We?ve had great weather leading up to this match and this evening is no exception. It will be flat and hard from beginning to end today so the toss winning captain should have no hesitation in having a dig. We could be in for some big scores today with both teams looking like they might have to chase a lot of leather in these conditions. Back to you BJ.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ:
Yeah, well as Mark Waugh said we could be in for some high scoring cricket today on what a pitch that will offer no assistance to the bowlers. For me today AB the Warriors will be to good for the Victorian?s and should walk away with a win to start the season as long as they play sensible cricket.

AB:
I think your right BJ the Warriors look to be to good plus they are strengthened with the addition of Justin Langer to their team. The Bushrangers poor record up here wont do them any good either.

BJ:
We?re ready to cross live to the ground now as Mark Waugh is standing by with the captains for the coin toss.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

MW:
Justin Langer has the coin so Cameron you can call it in the air.

Cameron White:
Heads

MW:
It?s a tail. JL, what are you going to do?

Justin Langer:
We?re going to have a bat. It?s looking like a good deck to bat on as usual and it will probably stay the same the whole way through the match.

MW:
Your back playing for Western Australia today what is the game plan for today and what do you think a good total will be?

JL:
It?s always great to play for WA. Chris Rogers and myself will be looking for a good start so the guys in the middle order can build off that. I reckon about 270 or so would be a good total out here. I don?t get much of an opportunity to play for the Warriors these days so hopefully I can get a few myself.

MW:
Are you happy with the team at your disposal?

JL:
Yeah were pretty much at full strength today. Obviously Gilly, Marto and Hus are in India but our batting line-up is great and we have some genuine pace bowlers.

MW:
Alright JL good luck for this match.

JL:
thanks mate, cheers

MW:
Cameron would you have liked to bat today

CW:
Yeah we would have liked to bat but our bowlers can get the job done for us with a few early ones. If we can keep them to 250 odd then we will be very happy chasing on what looks like a good wicket.

MW:
And the return of Slatter has been well documented in the last few days what do you think of his return to the team?

CW:
Yeah he?s a class kid. He?ll come in the middle order and do a job for us there and we can also give him the ball as well as him being a great fielder. I don?t have any doubts about his fitness to play at this level.

MW:
All right I?ll let you go get ready for this one.

CW:
No worries mate

MW:
Back to you BJ

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ:
Ok lets take a look at the teams for this match before the players make their way out for the start of this one.

AB:
Both teams are looking strong there but on paper I would still award it to the Warriors. Both teams have a long middle order in today which is a good move, as it will provide them with the ability to swing hard in the closing overs as long as they have batsman in the shed.

BJ:
Yes that?s a good point you make AB. A good start is going to be crucial for the Warriors on this flat track. However if the Victorians are going to have any chance of winning this one they will need a few early wickets out of strike bowlers such as Lewis and Denton.

AB:
Yeah I think a good start is more important for the Victorians here as they will be down in confidence having lost so many times at this ground.

BJ:
Well here come the players so let?s go down to the ground now for the start of the match with Mick Lewis bowling to Justin Langer?????

is there any chance of experimenting Slats with no3 position ? ;)

& its a beautifully presented Pitch and toss report :clap

Western Australia Warriors Vs Victoria Bushrangers
The WACA, Perth
Friday 13th October 2006

The decision to bat first was an obvious one for Justin Langer and it paid dividends in the opening overs as Langer accompanied by Chris Rogers who has made a living out of playing first class cricket had no trouble picking up runs in the early overs. As expected Lewis and Denton were handed the new ball for the Victorians in what is a three pronged pace attack for the visitors with left armer Allan Wise expected to come on first change. White, Moss and Slatter make up the rest of the bowling attack for the Victorians.

Rogers gets the ball rolling in the opening overs

Much to the delight of 5,000 strong crowd that had filled into the WACA in anticipation of another good year for the Western Australians and the Warriors coach Wayne Clark the home side got away nicely with a handful of boundaries from Langer putting the WACA?s in a good spot. Very few risks were taken as Langer and Rogers registered a 50 partnership after 12 overs which left the Victorian bowlers Lewis with figures of 0/21 from 5 and Denton 0/18 from 5 shrugging their shoulders wondering what to try next as the skipper Cameron White opted for a bowling change. Allan Wise took up the attack in the hope that the left armers variation would bring about a breakthrough but it wasn?t to be although he was very tidy and proved hard to score runs off as he conceded just 9 runs from his 3 overs so far as two in form batsman continued to push singles as Jon Moss went for 12 from two overs at the other end. At the 15 over mark the Warriors were sitting comfortably at 0/61 with Langer 39 and Rogers 19.

Langer pulls during the undeafeated partnership

The Warriors pair was determined to stay in and build a partnership and keep wickets in hand fighting off some very spirited bowling from Allan Wise who had the ball swinging away from the left handers and drew a number of false strokes resulting in some play and missing however a breakthrough did not result. Moss was taken out of the attack after just two overs as the skipper brought himself on to try and mix it up a bit with some leg spin. He proved to be a little bit more expensive then the Bushrangers would have liked as Langer brought up his half-century and the Warriors moved to 0/74 at the 20 over mark with the fielding restrictions lifted.

Just two overs later and still no breakthrough with the Bushrangers now starting to worry that the Warriors may get away from then without them even getting in the match. It?s the young fast medium Slatter to take up the attack after a massive break from first class cricket as a result of injury. Can he get the breakthrough for the Victorians and have a dream return to Domestic cricket?

Live Commentary

Brendan Julian:
It?s going to be the young medium fats bowler Slatter to take up the attack now. This is a big moment for him coming back from a year on the sidelines through injury. This isn?t the ideal time for him to be bowling but we?ll see if he can pick up the breakthrough that Victoria desperately needs.

Allan Border:
Yes it?s not a good time to be bowling as your basically just waiting for the batsman to make a mistake they are in that good form. We?ll see if Slatter is up to it here.

1st Over
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ:
A very decent over from Slatter to restart his career just going for one run with Rogers driving down the ground to long off. It?s 0/88 after 23 overs

AB:
He?s adopted a very nice line in that over just outside off to this left handed pair. That?s a welcome return to the game for him and it will definitely help his confidence for the rest of this spell.

2nd Over
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ:
A good over for Western Australia with five off that over. Some discipline line and length from Slatter there as he went past the outside edge of Rogers on two occasions. The Warriors can push singles all day at this rate as Cameron White has opted just to have the mandatory four men inside the circle. It?s 0/99 at the half way stage

AB:
Some great bowling there from Slatter who has used his height to get some steep bounce and as a result troubled Chris Rogers who will have one eye on a big total at this stage. Still a good over from the Warriors though managing five off it.

3rd Over
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ:
Six from that over after that very smart flick off the pads past deep backward square. I felt that Slatter just lost his line a bit in that over bowling a couple of bad balls however only one of them was punished. The Warriors really need to step it up a gear here as there run rate isn?t as high as it could be with no wickets down. Langer moves onto 70 and it?s 0/110 after 27 overs.

AB:
The Warriors are just lacking a sense of urgency at the moment which you would expect there to be having got all ten wickets in hand at the moment. Both Langer and Rogers just seem happy to push singles of this line and length bowling from Slatter and take the boundary when it presents itself occasionally.

4th Over
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ:
Justin Langer has shown a lot more intent in that over taking Slatter around the park scoring twelve runs from the six balls. Slatter tried some variation with a couple of short balls that really just sat up for Langer who crunched them to the fence. This could mean real danger for Victoria now and I think they would best benefit from a Denton, LEWIS OR wise being brought back into the attack instead of a part timer. The score is 0/130 after 29 overs.

AB:
In fact Cameron White has had the same idea as you BJ and he?s taking Slatter out of the attack after his four overs and replacing him with the more experienced paceman Mick Lewis. A decent spell from Slatter on return to the game non-the less.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slatter - 4 Over Spell Summary

Western Australia Warriors Vs Victoria Bushrangers
The WACA, Perth
Friday 13th October 2006

The breakthrough wasn?t far away for Victoria with Jon Moss rattling the timber of Chris Rogers the over after Slatter was taken out of the attack. It was a stylish 43 for Rogers from 73 balls as a massive partnership of 130 came to an end. Moss used his swinging medium pace to affect as Rogers attempted to drive a full ball, which swung back into him and found the gap between bat and pad for that all-important breakthrough. The Bushrangers showed their approval forming a tight circle and assuring themselves that this is still game on.

The Victorians form a tight huddle
after breaking a 130 run partnership

How many times has it been said that one wicket usually brings two after a big partnership. It came true again for the Victorians just a couple of overs after Moss got wicket number one. Paceman Gerard Denton came steaming into Justin Langer and again it was an inswining ball to the left hander who seemed to of been beaten for pace as the Australian test match opening batsman shuffled across the crease and was trapped dad in front whilst the umpires finger went up. At 2/138 the match is well and truly alive now with the Bushrangers needing a couple more as the run rate slows.

An extremly talented bowler.......and Cameron White

Shaun Marsh was joined at the wicket by experienced middle order batsman Marcus North. At first it was a quiet start until all of a sudden both men decided that with wickets in the bank and 15 overs to go that they wanted to up the run rate and went about it accordingly. 88 runs later Shaun Marsh innings came to an end after he made 54 from 49 in the partnership including 12 fours and a six. Now at 3/226 the Warriors were well and truly in control and had silenced any remaining critics. Marcus North was next to go caught in front by Lewis LBW for 46 from 45 including 10 fours and a six to make it 4/238.

Marsh sweeps on his way to a quick 54

It was then time to chance the arm of Warriors batsman Adam Voges and Luke Ronchi. Voges ended with a quick fire 22 from 15 with 4 fours and a six and Ronchi with 10 from 8 with a four and a six. At the close of innings the Warriors are 4/262 which is a round about the 270 that Justin Langer asked for at the toss before the start of this match and a little more then the 250 the Victorian skipper Cameron White said he?d like to change before the match. This is looking like becoming a very interesting match, as conditions are just about the same with the pitch sill playing very nicely for batsman. Can the Warriors defend their runs on the board or can the Victorians break there losing streak at the WACA and win just there second game in the history of the one-day domestic competition at this ground? Find out when we return.

Western Australia Warriors ? 4/262
50 Overs
Required Run Rate ? 5.24
Extra ? (2 W, 4 NB, 2 B) 8
FOW ? 130, 138, 226, 238

Little Tough task for Vic team! i shd agree that They(WA) played extremely well though i expect Slatts to do some magic in lower order... (Razzaq like innings ) :D

Not a bad bowling effort by the Vics. Hopefully Slats and his team-mates can conjure up a win.

I like the inclusion of real life pictures and the anaylsis of all of your overs. Very nice work :)

:cheers, and Go Slats :D
