Western Australia Warriors Vs Victoria Bushrangers
The WACA, Perth
Friday 13th October 2006

Jon Moss and Michael Klinger followed the umpires and the Western Warriors on to the WACA for the run chase. Brett Dorey and Steve Magoffin shared the new ball and did so very successfully with Dorey extracting steep bounce out of this hard WACA surface and Magoffin getting the ball to swing both ways which made timing the white ball very difficult for the opening pair.

The Victorians started well with Klinger playing the more aggressive role in the partnership, timing the ball sweetly from the start where as his partner Moss battled to find the middle of the bat and the gaps in the field. Dorey was on fire to start with beating the bat on a number of occasions but was left frustrated, as he couldn?t find the edge. Despite his dominance the Bushrangers managed to keep the run rate healthy picking up 5 or so an over off Magoffin at the other end and moving past the 50 run opening stand. The fist bowling change was made by Justin Langer who opted for more pace this time from Peter Worthington who up to the task but also lacked the penetration to get a breakthrough as Klinger turned one off the pads down to fine leg to bring up his half century which makes him the first Bushranger of the season to achieve the feat. Finally the breakthrough came in the 20th over with Magoffin the provider as Klinger fished at an outswinger and managed only the edge through to Warriors keeper Luke Ronchi.

Klinger raises the bat for his
half century before getting out shortly after

The Bushrangers have got the kind of start they were looking for with their run rate pretty much on par with what the Warriors was at this stage of their innings. Slatter will now make his way onto the ground to face a dangerous Western Australia pace attack as the fielding restrictions have been lifted. The long wait is over as Slatter prepares to silence his critics after 12 months out of the game. Will he succeed or crumble under the pressure?

Live Commentary

Brendan Julian: Here comes the new batsmen Slatter emerging from the stands to a polite round of applause as this WACA crowd acknowledges his return to first class cricket after 12 months out of the game. He?ll be very nervous facing up to Brett Dorey first ball who has surprisingly bowled 8 overs straight so far and is into his 9th now.

Allan Border: No doubt he?ll be a nervous wreck here. He?s had a few matches in grade cricket at the start of the season and made a few starts without any big scores but walking out to bat at the WACA with the Warriors bowling genuine wicket taking balls and a required run rate of 6 an over will not make it easy for Slatter. Here comes Dorey with the crows clapping him into bowl to Slatter???????..

10 Balls Faced
--------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ: It?s been a cautions start for Slatter with just 4 singles to his name. Jon Moss is the man that needs to show leadership in this partnership for the Bushrangers whilst the new batsmen gets to know the conditions. Slatter so far has showed that he is a lot more solid in technique then I remember from 12 months ago.

AB:I agree BJ he does look a lot more mature in his stroke play. That cover drive he just played looked technically very sound as have the few straight drives he has played so far. He?ll need to get a big score here today though if the Bushrangers are to have a chance.

BJ: Indeed he will need to bat sensibly as class bowlers like Dorey, Magoffin and Edmonson will have him gone very quick if he doesn?t show them some respect and only go after the bad ball.

AB: That is were we will find out if he has matured as a cricketer over his time out of the game. When he debuted for Victoria he played a lot of lose strokes so it will be interesting to see if he has tightened up his game for this season. At the moment Slatter is on 5 after 10 balls and it?s 1/96 after 23 overs

20 Balls Faced
--------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ: As we sore there Moss is gone for 40 having edged to Ronchi off the bowling of Ervine the former Zimbabwe international. Slatter now has the responsibility as he is joined by Hodge at the crease. We haven?t seen any big shots from Slatter yet and he is moving along at just under a run a ball so there?s good signs early AB.

AB: Yes Slatter is looking good right now but a 20 or 30 isn?t going to help the Bushrangers at this stage. They need a big partnership and Hodge is capable of batting for a long period of time so this may be make or break for Victoria who still require just over 6 an over to win it.

BJ: So Slatter has moved on to 18 from 20 balls so far without a boundary as Victoria are 2/112 after 27 overs which means they require 144 to win at 6.26 an over. It?s still very much game on here at the WACA.

30 Balls Faced
--------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ: The Bushrangers have lost another wicket, this time it was Hodge for 14 who was the victim of a run out with Slatter. Hodge was late to take off after a quick single to mid wicket and he was well short of his ground. It?s danger times now for the Bushrangers who desperately need a partnership with Slater looking like the most likely to do it.

AB: Yes the Victorians are three wickets down now and in trouble. If Slatter doesn?t go on to get a big score they may well lose this game. Dave Hussey is in now followed by Nick Jewell who has gone down the order and then Cameron White so a partnership needs to come soon.

BJ: Slatter continues to look good however as he now moves on to better then a run a ball 31 from 30 balls having just hit a couple of boundaries in the last over with a cover drive the cleared the in field and one that went over square leg. AB the Bushrangers are now 3/133 after 31 needing 117 at 6.16 an over but can they still do it?

AB: Well of course they can do it but realistically it?s going to be very tough with all of these WAC bowlers bowling superbly especially Sean Ervine with his medium pace swiningers. The required run rate needs to come down for Victoria to win otherwise scoreboard pressure may get to them.

40 Balls Faced
--------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ: Dave Hussey is the latest to join his team mates in the pavilion after dancing down the wicket to Voges off spin and having a swing and miss that resulted in him getting clean bowled. Slatter is the only man willing to resist this bowling attack but he cant do it alone as Nick Jewell joins him having swapped batting positions with him for this match.

AB:It?s no secret that the Victorians are now under the pump at 4 down. Still 108 to get with 6 wickets so it isn?t impossible but a lot of it falls to Slatter now who is playing beautifully at a run a ball 40 not out so far.

BJ: With Hussey out for 7 it?s the Bushrangers at 4/155 after 33 over requiring 6.35 an over. For me the Warriors will be to strong from here on in but we?ll see how it un folds.

50 Balls Faced
--------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ: The latest wicket from Sean Ervine has Victoria almost down and out if not for Slatter who is battling away trying to hold up the Bushrangers as they collapse around him. Ervine now has 3 into just his 6th over and is causing all kinds of problems.

AB: A positive for the Bushrangers here as Slatter goes over the top of cover for a boundary to bring up his 50. Isn?t he happy about this in his return to Australian Cricket although he looks very focused on the job, which is still to be done.

BJ: Fantastic 47 balls half century from Slatter here but the job is not even close to finished as the Bushrangers are 5 wickets down with not many batsmen to come. He?s still going here as he moves on to 58 with that latest boundary. Maybe he can be the hero for the Bushrangers here.

AB: You?ve spoken to soon BJ because it?s in the air?????????and out. Slatter is gone for 58 having tried to hit Edmonson over the top of long on out there but he didn?t get hold of it at all as mid wicket comes around and takes a simple catch to get rid of him. 6 wickets down and the Bushrangers are just about gone here. They still need 99 runs at 6.6 an over with no specialist batsmen left. It?s looking like the Bushrangers poor record at this ground will continue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

BJ: It?s been a good effort from the Victorian Bushranger but they have fallen 41 runs short of the 263 required to win having been bowled out for in just the 44th over. A big collapse from the Bushrangers here so they will need to pick themselves up for their next match which is a Pura Cup match at this ground against WA. We?ll be back shortly with the match presentation.

ShortLeg, i want to and i had to tell something on the update!

1) Unlucky Bushrangers
2) Slats batted beautifully
3) Good to see an responsible knock from this young man
4) Excellent,outstanding,amazing presentation! :hpraise

Yes this story has taken off from where it left but with even better presentattion :)
Great sensible battng by Slats but unlucky in the fact that nobody stayed with him!

SL this is 1 of the best stories around and even after a long break you can tell!
Keep up the sensational work :hpraise :clap

Unlucky about losing but that knock was sensational. The update every 10 balls faced was a good idea but it must have taken some effort. Slats last time I checked you used a Kookaburra not a GM ;). I can tell you I was very nervous watching you bat - I wanted to see you get a good score.

Well done and looking foward to future updates!
:cheers,

Thanks alot to everyone for supporting this story your feedback has been fantastic. However no one was the winner of the prediction contest with 3 people guessing the right answer to question 1 and and 4 people guessing the right answer to question 2 but no one managed both which was interesting. Thanks again and hopefully the Bushrangers will come back stronger in their first Pura Cup match against WA.

Damn! I was hoping no one would pick up on that. I couldn't find any pictures of a Bushranger with a kookaburra which is a bit discouraging.

Well I guess you know that I am really reading and looking at every bit of your story then :)

Maybe Slats should bat 3 permanently. With him being top scorer in first game back for the Bushrangers that is pretty impressive :)

I too support that view! But it will be intersting to observe his maturity in testing times like 0/1 or chasing huge targets!

Lol thats quite funny how you put your face on another players body, top story keep it up and I look forward to move Slats pics :)
