Torrential rain in Brisbane over the last two days have put the starting time of the First Test in serious doubt. Groundstaff will be working around the clock to ensure that the match will be able to commence at the noted start time of 11:00 am tomorrow. Curator Kevin Mitchell junior in a press conference held this morning pledged that he will so everything in his power to ensure that the game will start on time.

Good news has come in with the two umpires Bowden and Dar have declared that the match will commence at normal time with the Ashes campaign to be underway in a little over half an hour.

The captains are now walking out to toss the coin. Both are acting jovial but it is obvious the intensity is there and both men have a twinkle in their eyes. Michael Vaughan to toss, Ponting to call. The coin is tossed, Ponting calls heads correctly. He chooses to bat, an interesting decision considering the vast amounts of grass on this slightly unprepared wicket. We'll see if thats the correct decision as the match wears on.

Michael Vaughan seems very pleased with the decision that his opposite number has made. In an interview with Geoff Boycott he said that if he'd have won the toss he would have sent Australia in as he believes his bowlers will exploit the exaggerated seam movement that this pitch will offer. Ricky Ponting believes that if Australia can survive the first few sessions the wicket will harden up and become a belter to bat on.

The first ball of the Ashes series is to be bowled by Steve Harmison to Justin Langer in front of a full house. Bowling to a highly attacking field. First ball played innocuously on the off side. The second and third balls are sent to the boundary, hopefully setting the attacking tone for the series. The game settles down somewhat after that blistering start. Both batsmen continue to punish any short pitched bowling which comes their way.

Langer sends one to the fence.

Good start, bad news about the weather but good to see play start at the scheduled time.

Hayden is gone great ball from Harmison. Full pitched swinging away thick outside edge and Kevin Pietersen takes great catch diving away to his left.
M.Hayden caught K.Pietersen bowled S.Harmison 12(31)
