England in Australia

They only really seem to see Jaques as an opener. What other country besides Australia can get away with leaving out a guy who averages just under 60?
If thats what they are basing it on, that is stupid.

It doesnt really matter where you bat, if you can play cricket, you can play cricket.

And he was originally a middle order batsmen until NSW required him to open.

Exactly, he used to bat at number 4 both in State and County cricket. Plus they had no problem putting Hussey into number 5. Really the battle for batting number 6 shouldn't be a battle at all, Jaques should get it no questions asked. But he doesn't even get a mention, seems like they are counting on Langer retiring after the Ashes and for Jaques to take over. Next choice for number 6 should be Shane Watson, people seem to forget he has a first class average of over 50, plus is a more than handy bowler. Brad Hodge should also be above Clarke and Symonds for that spot at number 6. He has done a far lot more over the years to deserve a fair go.

Symonds shouldn't even be up for selection. His a batting allrounder and he looks at sea when batting in test matches while trying to build an innings that by all rights should go more then 20-25+ overs which is usually the maximum he gets to bat in ODI's. I mean what if Australia get themselves into a position like the last day on the 3rd Ashes test? Australia have enough batsman who can score very quickly and really already have a slogger in the side already. It's nothing against Symonds, personally I think his a brilliant ODI player. One of the best in the world at the moment.

As for the number #6 position. I'd probably choose Watson mainly because his an allrounder and as of late his been taking his fair share of wickets. Though, I wouldn't see no harm in bringing Jaques into the side, batting him at number 4 and dropping either Martyn or Hussey down to number 6. Initially, Martyn used to bat at number 6 anyway.

Do you seen any harm in losing the ashes? don't be a fool. Martyn is the best number #4 batsman we got, Jaques is medicore at best. Why would you drop Hussey even lower? If anything push him up higher

From a neutral perspective, I think this would be an ideal team for the Australians.

1. Justin Langer
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Ricky Ponting (captain)
4. Damien Martyn
5. Michael Clarke
6. Michael Hussey
7. Adam Gilchrist (wicket keeper)
8. Shane Warne
9. Brett Lee
10. Jason Gillespie
11. Glenn McGrath

it will probley be that way anyway!

Hussey will bat at number 5. Gillespie won't be selected. Clarke or Watson will bat at number 6. I think Johnson will probably make his debut.

I don't think Shane Watson is cut out to be a test player. Mitchell Johnson is still wet behind the ears, and I don't know how Australia could leave out Jason Gillespie. Great player.

Mitchell Johnson should go nowhere near teh Aussie side in my opinion. In all honesty, i'd rather have Clark, Gillespie or even Kasprowicz over him. And Watson is average to say the least, i'd definitley play Michael Clarke over him.

Shows how much the English know ;)

Because there's such an abundance of average players that can average 50 in first class cricket, Clarke's had many opportunities in the longer form and done sfa

I don't think Shane Watson is cut out to be a test player.
Why? His batting alone is better credentialled than most other options for a top 6 spot, and he's a genuine quick bowler

and I don't know how Australia could leave out Jason Gillespie. Great player.
I do, he hasn't taken wickets in ages and isn't even threatening in domestic cricket, picking players on past records won't help us any.

Graeme Hick averages more than Collingwood in FC cricket; Quick, let's recall him.

You attempted to make the point that Clarke was a better batsman than Watson and that averages actually mean something, So sorry for using your own cunning

Jaques is medicore at best? How am I suppose to take you're post seriously when it's so unaccurate like that? His no Hayden or even Langer but the guy is an absolute run machine.

I'm not being a fool at all, it was just a quick thought. Martyn would surely cope better down the order then what Jaques would.

Also, I don't see how dropping Hussey down a slot or even putting him up one would effect the way he plays in the middle order, he bats brilliantly anywhere he bats.
