England In India - October 2011/12

Who is that Joe Gatting in the Sussex squad? Son of Mike Gatting?

Also I wonder what happened to Liam Botham...

You will have every right to talk down to us when Pakistan reaches Number 3 at least.

Good Luck until then.:)

You will have the right to talk to me when you have a fast bowler fit enough to play a full series.

Good luck until then :)

You always have to make it India v Pakistan dont you?

This is a very interesting article on England and their number one status:
India in England 2011: How good are this England side? | Opinion | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

I don't agree with everything in the article but one point sticks out:

"Passages of play such as Mishra's stand with Sachin Tendulkar prove that England are not unstoppable, but given that no team in the world can replicate their current levels of desire, it's going to take something extra to derail their ambitions. In fact, that something extra has already been witnessed on three occasions in the past 18 months - Dale Steyn at Johannesburg, Mohammad Amir at The Oval, and Mitchell Johnson at Perth. Three devastating bowling spells that not even the best-drilled batsmen in the world could handle.

When competence encounters genius, there's usually only one winner, which is one very good reason to believe England will not last at the top. The trouble is, where are all the genius bowlers? Amir and Mohammad Asif will be suspended when England face Pakistan this winter, while Murali and Lasith Malinga have retired from Test cricket for Sri Lanka. Of England's forthcoming opponents, only Steyn and his sidekick Morne Morkel appear, at this precise moment in time, to have the necessary skills to rattle the most resolute, but without a third seamer to match the perseverence of a Tim Bresnan, England's batsmen will doubtless back themselves to see out the tough times, and thrive later on."

This is what I think England need to have an extended stay at the top of the world...genius. KP is the one player in the side who comes close but he lacks that extra hunger he had in the early years. I know he has scored a tonne load of runs in this series but he can be inconsistent.
In the bowling department, I don't really see anyone even coming close to the tag "great" let alone genius. Anderson might have a chance to prove his greatness in the coming months against Pak, SL and SA.

Man forget the paranoid Indian fans, their are like 2 out of the hundreds here that make any sense. Just tell the Indians that Pakistan has the third highest win/loss ratio in Test cricket history...having played less tests than all the test nations barring SL. :cheers

Nephew. Decent player, not a regular in the Sussex side, but plays a fair bit. Only 23, certainly talented enough with the bat. Give him 2-3 more seasons and he could be a very good cricketer.

Liam Botham went and played rugby, retired from professional ruggers in 2005, stopped playing cricket in late 90s.

Fairly strong Sussex side, good to see Machan playing. Ben Brown, the keeper, is also a very talented player, one to watch for the future. Played for England U-19s and is one of the best glovemen on the circuit.

Otherwise, what is it that makes IPL 'profitable'? The $2 ticket sales don't even pay for the lighting!

You kidding me? IPL games are as expensive as hell... More expensive than the regular Test or ODI for sure. PLUS all the money from broadcasting, ads - have you seen the number of Ads? They are raking in the $$$$

I went for an IPL match earlier this year, normal ticket was like Rs. 650.

BroadCasting

PLUS all the money from broadcasting, ads - have you seen the number of Ads? They are raking in the $$$$

SONY Entertainment Television paid BCCI US$2 Billion for 10 Year BroadCasting Rights.

SONY is part of the Japanese Electronics Giant SONY. Doubt there's any dirty money there.

Rohit Sharma is starting to really impress now. He had a fantastic ODI series against West Indies (on tough and sluggish pitches) and now a very good practice game. With Sehwag ruled out of the series, Rohit Sharma should get his best chance here to cement an ODI spot and push the likes of Raina to the brink. Lets see if he continues his form.

Good batting from Parthiv too. Another guy who is impressing in recent times after a failing display at the start of his career.

Why do people immediately think that if an Indian player goes bad, it's because of the IPL? Did you say that about Umar Akmal, or Ajantha Mendis or Phil Hughes (after his tour of SA)? It's just an easy explanation to make and an easy way to accuse the IPL of all evil in this world (I don't like the IPL either but it isn't the root cause of everything that has gone wrong with Indian players).

Well said mate :thumbs Fans of the better teams would generally rather blame the system rather than their usually good players. Australia has it too - we don't blame the IPL of course, we blame Andrew Hilditch. But Andrew Hilditch didn't make us lose by an innings when the Ashes were still alive. It was piss poor performance from the XI - even if you only would have picked 9 or 10 of them...And of course it begs the question, who will be blamed now that Hilditch is gone? Will be willing to bet that it's Michael Clarke's captaincy:facepalm

I hope the Indian media don't overhype this Varun kid. He must be nervous enough as it is about his debut, and could do without the added pressure of having the responsibility of the entire bowing attack being placed on him.

From the video, he seems ok. Is a bit nippy, but nothing too special from what I've seen.

Somebody talked of me? :spy

jks, Smurf is right.

And lol, IPL is a multi-billion business venture. Don't doubt it.

All we really know about IPL is that they spend a lot of money on it; who can say if the opposite is true?
