England In India - October 2011/12

@Jeremy your dislike for Raina is natural. English fans generally hates whoever whacks their bowlers this badly. First it was Yuvraj and now its Raina. :p

IMO, Cook is a very decent ODI player. It was the slow batting of Trott which caused Cook to take more risks. Otherwise he was easily scoring more than run a ball.
They badly missed Bell on this track.

mate cook is good player but he won't become a great player in ODI. Scoring 50-60 at top of order in subcontinent is not hard, the real test comes when you have to hit boundaries against spin.

You need a grafter in the squad. A squad full of strokemakers would be prone to collapses.

Agree with AngryPixel, Trott's slow play made Cook to take more risk.
But a player should face such circumstances, Cook is good in ODI but he should have played at his potential.

Someone who scores runs in perfect conditions to do so. So therefore, the opposite would be someone who scores runs when the going is tough, but doesn't score them when they should really cash in with big scores.

Eg. Raina can't score a run when the ball moves, or the team is under the cosh. Well he can, but it is a matter of time before his swings either miss or edge something.

KP - Up against teams he should be smashing 100's against, he'll get out. However stick him in SA against a hostile opposition, 100. In Australia when your team have lost wickets - 100. Against McGrath and Warne - 100. 20-20 World Cup - Runs.

Etc...

Well Raina's Overall avg is 35 which drops to just 33 when he's away. So thats not a massive drop as your post suggested.

I just don't get England's batting order today. Pietersen (with Morgan out) is probably our best player of spin, so why bring him in against some dibbly, dobbly little slow bowlers, which is just not his natural game? If anything, he should have been going down the order to 5, not up it to 3. Get Trott in early against the pace and let him build an innings. Let KP come in at 5 when spin is on and we need someone competent in that area.

Cook needs to work out his mindset if he wants to play ODI's. He seems to have no idea about how to pace an innings and when to attack and when not too. What's the point in trying to clear the ropes when he could have pushed it around and left that to other players, all the while scoring well at the other end. Strange decisions made today, which unfortunately will probably be swept under the rug due to the collapse.

Nearly all ODI pitches are flat-beds though Angrypixel ;)

How many of those away games are in Sri Lanka or Bangladesh? Just wondering?

Actually I really liked Yuvraj. Why? Because he had character and fight.

Well just did a quick search to test how is England's best batsman Ian Bell is away from the home. His overall avg is 34 and away avg is 28. He avg 29 in india and New Zealand. 27 in Australia and 13 in South Africa. so does that mean he can neither play spin nor pace away from home? :p

No, it means he can't play ODI cricket haha

That's a well known fact. For the record Raina averages 19 in SA and 14 in Windies ;)

Raina avg 27 in Aus,44 in NZ, 39 in Eng and 19 in SA (Still better than Bell's 13)

Bell England's best batsman? Did I miss the rest of them retiring or something?

they already have 2 grafter in their side (trott, bopara). Last time england was able to drew series against india in india in 2001. During that time they had Trescothick who was perfect ODI batsman.

Cook is good player but needs to learn how to get boundaries when team needs.

I was surprised that they dropped bell just because bairstow scored 100 against a weak ranji side..

Thanks Angry, essentially, Raina has scored more runs on the sub-continent. Anyway, it's a moo point (you know, one a cow would make). Nearly all ODI pitches are identical, some a bit slower, but nearly always flat. Raina bats in the middle order, so rarely faces a moving or seaming ball. In tests, it's like watching someone who just doesn't have any fight in him, that's my dislike.

Even i dislike him in test. But he's a really good ODI player. Slogs are okay in ODI's. It disgusted me when he tried to slog his way outta trouble in the Tests :mad
