England In India - October 2011/12

Gambhir is missing T20's because the very talented angry young man is getting married :D

T20 Squad is pretty good I think with Uthappa coming back. This would be my team for T20:

Uthappa
Rahane
Kohli
Raina
Dhoni
Yusuf/Manoj
Jadeja
Ashwin
Praveen
Yadav
Aaron/Vinay

Plenty of spin options with Yusuf and Jadeja. Eeven though Vinay did well today, I would still like to see Aaron in that game.

The real question is why is there no test series?

No time? Aren't we playing like Pakistan in UAE or something and possibly the kiwis after? (not sure)

All too predictably England lose it because of bowling, although much emphasis is on batting. England had India in trouble, but before the 20th over on comes Bopara. He, Patel and Pietersen went for 51 runs off 7 overs I think it was, why on earth are we using bit part bowlers when trying to defend a modest total?

Our batting is too often found wanting, but our bowling is the major problem. As per my analysis in a thread you might be able to find quite easily, England win ODIs a lot more often when they've taken 9-10 wickets than when taking less. Wickets create pressure, not bowling a few overs reasonably economically. I think whenever I've looked at wickets taken by (half-decent) England bowlers they tend to be taking 1.5 per ODI on average give or take, to take anything like enough we need either superstar bowlers or five taking 1.5 wickets per ODI. I know it isn't an exacting science, but we can't afford to be bowling 1/5 or more of our overs with bowlers posing little wicket threat and relying on the main four to take the bulk between them.

England are mistaken if they think someone like Patel can 'do a job' in India as a back-up spinner, we should have played/taken two spinners

Steve Davies? Seriously, what did he ever do wrong? Bring him back to the set-up. Surely better than Kieswetter.

As for a second spinner, how about using Danny Briggs? Saw a little of him for Hampshire during the Friends T20, and he seemed decent.

Bring 2 spinners or 3, what works in India is mentality. Australians have been successful in India, they too dont have a decent spinner(Atleast Swann the NUMBER 1 spinner is in Englands team) but have done well.

When England dont care a ???? about ODI cricket, why play and get humiliated? If it was not for Rain back in England, I can say it proudly India would have won it 2-1.

Haha. That's 2 more than what India eventually managed throughout the course of the tour! Impossible.

FTR, it's still 8-2 in favour of England against India in 2011.

Yes I agree its 8-2 favoring England, but you are no blind, who is struggling who is not. Come on Haari.. You too know India were close enough but England were ahead in ODI series due to help from 12th man, the RAIN!!!

Test I agree, we were defeated by a better side.

Well When this series will end, scoreline will be 8-6.. And this series is just a advance payback, full payback will be given next year. :D

thats why clt20, IPL are getting famous in india just because teams like NZ, WI, ENG, SL are not able to give fight to India in india.

India has not lost a test to any team (except SA) in last 5 years.
in Last 22 ODI in india

India Won - 20

In my opinion there should be tri-series instead of bilateral series.. When One Team starts dominating then u have 3rd team who can give challenge to that team.

I got you point, Kiewetter hasn't been as he used to be. You usually see the selectors pick him because he has got a pretty decent average in one-day compared to Davies. They have used a lack of variety players, but non of them proved their point.

Home advantage is what I believe.

Well that's what happened in England, too. They also got help from rain.

I would prefer Bairstow over Kieswetter any day. Bairstow has that patience to bat longer and is suited for 50 over cricket. and as a back up Steve Davies will be a good choice. Just keep kiewswetter for T20.

P.S. WHERE IS BELL?

India was in good position in both rain-affected matches.
India could have won those.

Agreed on Davies.

As for 2nd spinner, Borthwick is around, lets use him. Maybe give Dernbach a rest.

I still stand by my claim that the England selectors, Coach and Captain don't use Kieswetter in the right way. For Somerset, he has Trescothick at the other end blazing away, while he builds an innings and then explodes towards the end. That's what he should be doing for England, because unlike Cook, he can go aggressive and score big runs later on in the innings. Instead he has to try to do the pinch hitter role, which doesn't really suit him. Look at the CLT20, he was at his best batting deep into the games and getting boundaries at the end.

As I've said for the last year or more, bring in Davies as that pinch hitter and let Kieswetter play the anchor role. That's how you get the best out of both of them. Then it doesn't even matter who keeps wicket. Instead we get Cook sinking anchor and getting 50 or so at best because he can't find the boundary later in the innings, hence him picking out deep mid-wicket.

To be fair, I don't think there's anyone better at picking out Deep Mid Wicket haha

The moment he plays the shot, it's almost guaranteed to go straight down the fielder's throat.

Never really sure why Davies was ostracised. Funnily enough, just after he came out he never played again... not that I'm suggesting any kind of bias, but strange coincidence. Certainly as one of the better players of spin in our side, as well as one of the best in the world at putting away under 80mph bowling, it seems odd that of all the series to drop Bell, it is this one :/
