England Team Discussion

The balance of the side they go with could be interesting.
It certainly could be.

With everyone available I would personally want:
  1. :eng: :bat: Our Lord and Saviour Zak Crawley
  2. :eng: :bat: Ben Duckett
  3. :eng: :bat: Ollie Pope
  4. :eng: :ar: Joseph Rootalitharan
  5. :eng: :bat: Harry Brook
  6. :eng: :bat: Ben Stokes :c:
  7. :eng: :wk: Ben Foakes please
  8. :eng: :ar: Liam Dawson or Rehan Ahmed
  9. :eng: :bwl: Ollie Robinson
  10. :eng: :bwl: Jack Leach
  11. :eng: :bwl: Jimmy Anderson
Going with two SLO bowlers against India shouldn't be an issue given they're the most right-handed batting country in the world

That series was more down to an inability of batters to face Mitchell Johnson than the bowling.

If I had to get Foakes in the side, I'd probably have Root bat at 3 and leave Pope out. I think, if you're having two left-arm spinners, then having a point of difference is fine, but Dawson and Leach feel very samey.

I think let your best batsman bat where he wants. I could see Stokes up there as a sacrificial lamb tho
Have you best batsman bat where it's most beneficial to the team to increase their chances of winning. Root averages at 3 and 4 in India are almost identical. I could see them just having Foakes as back up but someone has to go if they are intending to play him, Bairstow edges it for me over Pope.

Stokes could bat at 3 though, I'd be fine with that.

Gotta agree that picking Pope feels extremely risky. If I had to throw a curveball, I’d even swap Duckett and Pope in the batting order.

When you look at the squad there's no spare batter. Lawrence, Livingstone, Jacks could all bat 6 or 7 and bowl. So, having thought about it, my assumption is Foakes is picked to play. Can't see why they'd take him otherwise. Pope could deputise, at least in the short term, for Bairstow as keeper.

With regard to Pope, my memory of him is looking absolutely clueless against spin last time in India. England did pretty well after he got injured in the Ashes (not to say it was because he was out) so they may think in this series it might be better to play someone else at 3. Brook would probably be better suited to bat at 3 in India than he was in England, Stokes could do it and with spin coming on a lot earlier having Root there to come in would make sense to me.

It feels like they might try some things that seem crazy but are probably be well thought out strategies. Like I said earlier, pretty much every test England play now is entertaining, so going up against the toughest team to beat in home conditions I can't imagine it won't deliver.

It may just be coincidence but I’ve never seen Pope look comfortable against spin on a consistent basis. I don’t think Brook’s great at it either for what it’s worth which is why I feel it would be prudent to have just one of them in the lineup and go with Bairstow as a specialist batter for at least the first test despite him being atrocious the last time he was on tour here.

Brook batting 3 solves many problems that way they can fit Bairstow and keep with Foakes in the subcontinent
