England Team Discussion

Oh it was just pure coincidence that also shared a name with another Yorkshire town
England county names are simply epic

There’s a place called Washington in Sunderland, reading Washington,Sunderland

This is the lineup I'd pick for England in Champions Trophy (based on the current squad):

:ar: Bethell / :bat: Salt (my pick is Salt, despite his poor form)
:bat: Duckett
:bat: Root
:bat: Brook
:wk: Buttler (c)
:ar: Livingstone
:ar: J Overton
:bwl: Atkinson
:bwl: Archer
:bwl: Rashid
:bwl: Carse

The bowling attack is not giving any confidence ngl.

I'd probably go Wood instead of Atkinson and Carse would definitely bat above Archer, Rashid and Wood.

If I was to go with an opener instead of Salt I'd probably go with Jamie Smith. Outside option would be Brook or Buttler then you could get Bethell in the middle order.

Not sure if Bethell would get in the side, unless they want a third spinner and in that case I'd probably have him at 6 or 7. You could probably squeeze Bethell in instead of a 4th seam bowler.

Honestly the more you see of the current limited overs side it makes me reflect on how lucky we were in 2015-2019. We had 11-12 great players who all peaked at the same time, a squad that rarely changed and played consistently. They played a fresh brand of cricket, that most teams have caught up with now and had an inspirational captain who was an early adopter when it came to data. It feels like they advanced the game massively and it was always going to be difficult to sustain but also like they decided who give up on the format in the certainty/hope that they could just keep doing what they had done.

Seven batters who averaged 40+ (Stokes at 50 and Root at 58.75). Moeen, Woakes, Plunkett all 20+. David Willey was the lowest strike rate at 82.3, Root was the lowest those top order batters at 90.83.

Plunkett was a masterful middle overs bowler, Woakes developed into an excellent new ball bowler and then Archer arrived.

13 players played at least 46 matches (12 played 60 plus) between 2015 and the conclusion of the 2019 WC. Adil Rashid has made the most appearances since then and only has 45 matches, it's really no wonder things have gone awry. Nine players who have played 20 plus matches (of the 15 since the WC win) aren't even in the squad anymore.
