England

Would have thought Woakes would be the way to go considering all the time he spent playing in Australia. It's not like he was shocking either.

sky sports news has been showing the dernbach story all night, with clips of wickets, one was a waist high full toss that the batsman dragged on:facepalm

How typical of England is this, calling someone up to the World Cup squad with little or no experience in ODIs :facepalm Isn't Jade a girl's name? :yes:lol:facepalm

If I were England I'd have been looking at replacing Yardy with the replacement for Shahzad, not replacing Shahzad if you see what I mean. Our top three bowlers in terms of averages in this World Cup are Tredwell (4 wkts), Bopara (2 wkts) and Swann (12 wkts) - so two spinners in the top three. Bresnan is fourth, while they might be looking for a third seamer they ought to have considered a third and proper spinner, or all-rounder spinner.

Our bowling attack next match could be ridiculously inexperienced, say :

Tremlett : 14 ODIs
Dernbach : 0 ODIs
Swann : 50 ODIs
Tredwell : 4 ODIs
Yardy : 28 ODIs

Less than 100 ODIs between them, I know England are not likely to pick three spinners, and they make it hard to do so by playing Swann only for years, but does it not show the inexperience of the squad - especially in bowling? Shight has 45 ODIs to his name, Shahzad had 11 and Bresnan 41. Only Broad (76), Anderson (142) and Swann (50) have 50+ ODI caps. In stark contrast the batting mostly have 50+ caps - Morgan (63), Strauss (126), Prior (67), Pietersen (114), Bell (96), Collingwood (197), and Bopara (58) with Trott (24) being the only one below of the proper batting.

I can see Dernbach being cannon fodder for some of the sides England might meet in the latter stages, I suspect Anderson will get a recall. Oh why has not one of the replacements called got spin in their locker?

Dernbach will be back-up, don't really see him getting a game. Tremlett won't be playing the Quarter-Final and i reckon they'll call Anderson back in.

It's all well and good saying "trust England to call someone in who hasn't got ODI experience", but what seamer other than Woakes could you call up? I'm surprised they didn't go for Woakes. But you aren't going to go for Plunkett are you? He's a bit, er, crap.

There aren't back-ups in the county circuit with significant international experience.

I'd have gone for Rashid, can bat 7 if we want to expand the bowling department.

Na we already have a useless (sometimes useful) bits & pieces all-rounder in Yardy for that.

Yeah, Rashid is completely useless.:rolleyes Experienced he isn't, talented he is.

I dont rate his talent anymore TBH & ATM dont think he is international standard for any format for England.

A 23 year old leg spinner who has taken 13 5 wicket hauls and 10 4wh in FC along with 4 hundreds. Yeah, clearly lacking in the talent department.

Yet the England selectors seeing those FC stats haven't picked him on test tour in over a year. While Tredwell & the recalled Panesar have leapfrogged him in the pecking order as the potential # 2 spinner in tests to Swann.

Because he's inexperienced. They don't want to do a Schofield again.

Inexperience is one way of looking at it, given that traditionally leg-spinners take time to mature as proven by test history (unless you are Warne) & the fact that England have produced a test quality wrist spinner since Johnny Wardle (although he left-arm, so we probably have to go all the way back to Doug Wright & Tich Freeman).

But another way of viewing it, is to say they dont rate him currently or a long term prospect (my POV currently). Since not every leg-spinner in cricket history who debuted young managed to come back strong in his mature years as - many simply drifted off into the wilderness & this list is endless. I was more impressed with a young Salisbury and Schofield that Rashid now also..

Just a thought. If this WC was folllowing the previous super 8 format England would be taking 5 points forward as their defeats came against non-qualifying teams.
Shame...

Sad reality . Had it been last WC's format , initial Super Six table (sorted by pts , then by NRR)

England - 5
Pakistan - 4
South Africa - 4
Sri Lanka - 3
Australia - 3
India - 3
New Zealand - 2
West Indies - 0

So basically , England would have needed just 1 win out of the 4 matches against AUS,PAK,SL,NZL or maybe 2 at the maximum .

BBC Sport - Cricket - Cricket World Cup - England hit by Yardy withdrawal

England all-rounder Michael Yardy has flown home from the World Cup because he is suffering from depression.

"Leaving at this stage of the World Cup campaign was a very difficult decision to make," the 30-year-old said.

"But I felt it was the only sensible option for me and I wanted to be honest about the reason behind that decision."

Feel bad for him as he had been coping a lot of flack, due to his performances, but it is probably best for everyone if he goes back home

Yup, the best decision for all involved.

Rashid has been called up to replace Yardy.
