Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

4th Test: Two changes. Rashid and Pietersen in, Jones and Horton out. Two tough moves but I chose Colly over Horton due to Colly being slightly more consistent. I dropped Jones as he was more out of form than Davies, did I drop the right bowler though?

We finally won the toss and decided to have a bat on a track that looked like taking spin.

Cook and Vaughan put on 44 for the 1st wicket as we looked to get plenty of runs on first up. Cook went for 21 though as Friend had him out lbw. Vaughan and KP added 30 for the 2nd before Vaughan went for 24. KP went not long after for 21 as our top 3 collapsed! Bell and Collingwood got the innings back on track a bit though with a partnership of 112 for the 4th wicket before Colly went for 52. Flintoff and Prior offered some stability to work around Bell but they both fell without making major contributions. Friend was the chief destroyer of the middle order taking 3 wickets! The tail offered some support for Bell, including 45 for the 8th wicket with Hoggard and 25 for the 9th wicket with Davies. Bell was last man out making a brilliant 133 in tough conditions and a hard situation. 309 all out, Friend 4-69, JOubert 2-30, Ntini 2-69 and Govender 1-77 were the wicket takers.

They got off to a good start as AB and Smith put on 116 for the 1st wicket before Panesar got the wicket of AB for 59. He got Kallis out for a duck in his next over as we made up for the big opening stand. Smith was joined by Duminy and as Smith was No1 in the world I knew I had a tough situation and it proved to be, Smith and Duminy played excellently all my efforts in vain as they put on 205 for the 3rd wicket and soared past our total with 8 wickets in hand. The partnership fell to the bowling of Flintoff as he bowled Duminy for 96. Smith and Van Wyk put on 32 for the 4th wicket before Van Wyk fell to Hoggard. Their innings really consisted of 3 contributions - Smith, Duminy and AB - the next highest score was 14 and that was made by Friend at the end of the innings. Smith finally fell for 204, Monty getting the big scalp, but just how much damage had been done? Well it didn't help that Friend and Govender put on 23 for the last wicket to get South Africa to 441. Monty did get the last wicket which gave him 5-107. Hoggard 2-81 took Rudolph and Pollock. Flintoff 2-58 and Rashid 1-83. The leggie being expensive having bowled only 19 overs.

So we had a big defecit and we needed a good start, but again our top order collapsed as Cook and KP fell early to the bowler of Friend and Govender. Vaughan and Bell put on 28 for the 3rd wicket, but the hero of the first innings fell for 21! Vaughan was joined by Collingwood - arguably the form batsman at the moment in terms of consistency - and they put on 138 for the 4th wicket before Vaughan fell for 93 to Govender. Colly and Flintoff put on 56 for the 5th wicket, but then Colly also fell on 93 to Govender! We still needed some more runs to stand some chance of victory. Flintoff fell for 31 before he and Prior could really get going but the keeper who after a bit of a bad run came good, as he and Rashid put on 66 for the 7th wicket before Rashid fell for 21 to Ntini. Prior fell eventually for 58 to Ntini, but Davies and Panesar offered a little bit more for the 10th wicket as they put on 25 to set a target of 229 for victory, Davies falling for 19 to Ntini. Ntini 2-65, Friend 3-93 and Govender 3-102 were the pick of the bowlers.

Davies got the early wicket of Smith as we made a decent start, but Ab was joined by Kallis who was in inspired form as they put on 130 for the 2nd wicket when Ab fell for 66 to Hoggard. Kallis put on 58 for the 3rd wicket with Duminy before Duminy fell to Panesar and Kallis fell in the same over to Panesar, it was all to late though as Van Wyk and White put on 23 for the 5th wicket to see them home by 6 wickets. Kallis' 109 was the key in their last innings. Panesar 2-49 was quite indifferent, despite the two wickets he was being expensive on a turning pitch.

The selection of Rashid didn't work, we know have just one more test to win the series. I need more than just Monty to perform and I need my top order to fire.

Would have helped to win that. Smith destoryed you in the first innings. That made it tought being about 100 behind.

Good pres mate. Just showing it straight up.

Yeah good story, clear presentation and well explained, reps for you, prehaps I can distill some revenge for England with my Zimbabwe side??

I have South Africa at home in my next series.

5th Test; Jones in for Rashid.

In this crucial game which looked like being a seamers wicket we lost the toss and were put in to field first. I wasn't too disheartened.

Smith and AB - as the trend of the series always was - got off to a good start putting on 95 for the 1st wicket before Smith fell 1 short of his half century to the bowling of Collingwood. Kallis joined the young batsman and they batted beautifully, putting on 130 for the 2nd wicket before Collingwood broke a partnership again, AB falling for 86. Duminy and Kallis put on 31 for the 3rd wicket before Duminy fell to Panesar. 31 was also put on for the 4th wicket between Kallis and Van Wyk, Kallis was the man to go for 108 to the bowling of Davies. Van Wyk and White put on 37 for the 5th before White fell for 18 to the bowling of Collingwood. They then suffered something of a mini-collapse as Panesar took 2 quick wickets. ButVan Wyk and Joubert put on 70 for the 8th wicket before Joubert fell to Davies for 32. Van Wyk was last man to fall as Panesar grabbed his 4th, the keeper scoring 83. 433 all out, Panesar 4-79 the pick of the bowlers. Collingwood 3-70 was very good too. Davies 2-69 and Hoggard 1-87 the other contributors.

In reply, could our top order score some runs? No. Cook and Vaughan fell for a meagre 20 runs between them. Bell and KP put on 49 for the 3rd to try and revive our 1st innings. Kp fell for 32 though as Govender picked up his 3rd, KP passing 4,000 Test runs in the process. The middle order fought quite well, but there were no big partnerships, several decent ones though. Bell and Colly put on 36 for the 4th before Colly fell to Friend. Bell and Flintoff put on the best partnership of the innings putting on 67 for the 5th wicket before Flintoff fell for 37 to Ntini. Prior and Bell put on 53 for the 6th wicket as we looked like avoiding the follow on, Bell went though for a successive brilliant knock after his dogged 133 in the 4th test, Joubert got his wicket. Prior batted quite well with the tail but when he fell for 42 the innings was over. 271 all out, Govender 4-91, Friend 3-47, Ntinin 2-54 were the pick of their attack.

We needed to get them out cheaply to have a chance of winning the series, drawing it even. Smith and AB carried on in the same old fashion putting 75 on the board before Flintoff got Smith for 27. AB was joined by the in form Kallis and they made 115 between them. Panesar breaking the partnership as AB fell on 97, that elusive hundred still sits on the horizon! From 190-2 we surprisingly bowled them out for 293 with a stunning spell of 4-47 from Simon Jones. Friend 35, Van Wyk 20 and joubert 16 getting the majority of those runs. Flintoff took 3-58 including that of Kallis (62) as he passed 250 Test Wickets. Monty 2-65 also took some valuable wickets.

We needed a big score to win with 5 1/2 sessions left. 456 runs needed could we miraculously win or would we flop like a Whale in space?

A decent opening stand was needed and finally Vaughan and Cook delivered putting on 65 for the 1st wicket, Vaughan going for 39 to the bowling of Ntini. KP joined Cook and they scored 107 runs for the 2nd wicket as things looked bright but Cook fell on 56 to Friend. KP and Bell put on 30 for the 3rd wicket before Bell went for 18. Disaster struck when KP fell for 78 to Govender. 41 was put on for the 5th wicket between Collingwood and Flintoff, Collingwood falling for 23. Flintoff and Prior put on 51 for the 6th wicket before Prior fell for 18, not before passing 1,000 Test runs though. Jones and Hoggard fell without any meaningful contribution, but Flintoff put on 41 for the 9th wicket with Davies (19) before Fred fell on 98! He's gone two seasons without a hundred now. Monty was last man out to Joubert. 367 all out. Ntini 3-70, Govender 3-94 and Friend 2-93 were the main wicket takers.

So we lost disappointingly and lost 2 points in the world rankings, we are still top but are level on points with Australia.

Positives of the Tests:

Ian Bell - His form has been good, being the most consistent batsman.
Paul Collingwood - He did well when he came in and was, like Bell, consistent.
Paul Horton - His talent finally showed for England as he got his maiden test hundred, a big one too.

On the bowling front no one really stood out, they all performed at one stage but rarely at the same time. Their attack was just too strong in the end, Smith, Kallis and AB all being very strong. Duminy and Van Wyk scoring runs too. Their bowlers were superior too. We probably should've lost more than 2-1. The loss of KP was a big blow, his calibre will always be missed.

A crucial one day series up next, what will happen?

Well hopefully you can do well, will be hard though.

Going back to the recent match, it was only 88 runs but England left themselves too big a target for them to get but at least Horton and Bell did well better than colly but overall not the worst Test series in the world. Places to improve though are there and especially bowling, although Panesar has been alrite in the last two matches?

Yeh, Monty is my main man. Wouldn't dream of dropping him. Jones seems to either take 3/4 or none and be expensive. I hold hope for Davies. Need someone to fire, might plump for Harmison as he did alright last season.

Ah dissapointing loss. At least your still on top of the test rankings. Cant wait to the ODI series.

This is not good!

Im sure you'll have some wins in the next few matches though.

Sorry for the delay of update, what with the test match and planning my dads 60th birthday party it's been a bit busy.

20-20; Team: Blackwell, Tres, KP, Colly, Prior, Vaughan, Bell, Plunkett, Jones, Davies, Panesar. We won the toss and chose to bat.

Blackwell fell early but Tres and Kp put on 68 for the 2nd wicket before Tres fell for 42. Being a typical 20-20 innings our innings didn't contain many partnerships but KP (37) and Colly (45* from 28 balls) contributed as we reached 172-6. Joubert 2-30, Govender 2-46. Pollock 1-32 and Nel 1-30 also took wickets.

Their innings was alot like ours in that contained few partnerships, only 2 over 20 runs infact. Davies got some early wickets (Smith and Kallis) but Ab stuck around and scored 37. Van Wyk also stuck around, but my spin king - Panesar - took 4-35 to destroy their middle order and any chances of winning. All out for 134, Van Wyk 25 and Rudolph 18. Plunkett 1-20, Jones 1-22, Blackwell 1-23 also took wickets. Davies 3-34 did well.

1st ODI: Flintoff in for Plunkett and some order reshuffling.

We lost the toss and were put in to bat.

Tres fell early in our chase for a series win as did Blackwell. KP and Vaughan put on 101 for the 3rd wicket partnership to get the innings back on track as 250 looked a minimum. Joubert was the bowler who got my two left handed openers. Kp and Bell put on 48 for the 4th wicket before KP went for 73. Bell was joined by Collingwood who carried on his good form scoring runs in good time. They put on 44 for thr 5th wicket before Bell went for 31. The final partnership of the innings saw Collingwood and Flintoff add 44 for the 6th wicket. 249-5 after 50 overs. Collingwood 59* from 35 balls and Flintoff 18*. Jouibert 2-45, Friend 1-36, Nel 1-58.

We needed a good start and didn't get it as Smith and AB put on 90 for the 1st wicket before Collingwood got Smith for 42. AB fell to Blackwell in the next over for 47 as we looked like getting back on track. Kallis and Van Wyk had put on 36 for the 3rd wicket before Colly got another wicket. Kallis and Rudolph though put on 85 for the 4th wicket and looked like winning the game. Jones got Rudolph for 40. But Kallis (97*) saw them home. Collingwood 2-41 from 6 was the pick of the bowlers. Most were expensive though.

Sorry for the shortness of the reports, it's been hectic this last week.

2nd ODI: Plunkett in Blackwell out, the pitch looks good for seamers. We were put in to bat first.

Vaughan fell for 1 as Friend got an early breakthrough on this swinging pitch. With my two best players at the crease I needed a good partnership and they did, Tres and KP put on 86 for the 2nd wicket before Tres fell for 51 to Kallis. Bell joined KP but Kp fell for 41 tot he bowling of Nel. Bell and Collingwood were left to bat with 15 overs left, the tough conditions left KP with a strike rate of under 60! The two workers though put on a good effort of 76 for the 4th wicket before Bell went for a good 42 to Friend. Flintoff came in and scored 12* from 9 balls, Colly finished 36*. 194-4, Friend 2-25 the pick of the bowlers.

We needed a good start and we got it as Jones got AB 3rd ball. Kallis and Smith put on 32 for the 2nd as they looked to get back into the game. The partnership fell when Plunkett got Kallis in his first over. In his second over he got Smith for 21, great stuff! He was expensive, but it didn't matter he got two big wickets. Rudolph and Duminy put on 34 for the 4th wicket as it looked like being a tight finish. But Flintoff dismissed Duminy for 27. Van Wyk joined Rudolph at the crease and they put on 45 for the 5th, the biggest partnership of their innings. But it fell when Van Wyk went for 27 to the bowling of Collingwood. Who got Rudolph in his 3rd over also. Joubert and friend put on 27 for the 9th wicket to frustrate me but we eventually bowled them out for 177. Flintoff 3-19 bowled well. Collingwood 2-14, Jones 2-37, Plunkett 2-56 (7 overs). A good win!

I forgot to screenshot this game, sorry.

3rd ODI: No changes, we won the toss and chose to bowl despite it being a good track.

Davies got AB to give us a good start. Smith and Kallis put on 48 for the 2nd wicket as our bowlers struggled a little with control. When Flintoff got Smith for 26 it ended their partnership. Kallis and Duminy put on 54 for the 3rd wicket when Monty struck, dismissing Kallis for 58. Duminy and Rudolph put on 38 for the 4th wicket but DUminy fell for 30 to Panesar. Rudolph and Van Wyk put on 96 for the 5th wicket in the biggest partnership of their innings. Van Wyk fell to jones on 45. They finished on 26408. Rudolph made 75, the bowlers did quite well I thought. Flintoff 2-43, jones 2-47 and Monty 2-48 all bowled their full quota. Davies 1-59 was slightly expensive, Plunkett went at under 5 which was good.

I wanted a good start and Tres and Vaughan did just that and more! None of the bowlers trouled them after about 5 overs, with Tres edging a couple safely away from the slips. They put on 164 for the 1st wicket whenTres was run out for 95! Kp joined his captain and they put another century stand scoring 103 for the 2nd wicket. Vaughan got his first ODI century with 120* and KP 47* was excellent also. Back to back wins!

No screenshots at the moment as Photobucket is down. I'll get one of Vaughans hundred too!

VaughanHundredODI.jpg

I'll get one of Vaughans innings when I next go on ICC (maybe tomorrow night or Sunday morning).

Vaughan scoring an One Day hundred? Impossible. This game must be a bad one :p

4th ODi, unchanged and chose to bat after winning the toss.

It was a flatbed of a pitch and I hoped that my top order would get the majority of the runs. Tres and Vaughan got a decent start before the captain fell on 58 for 19. KP joined Tres on this wicket and I knew they could be very dangerous if they got going. Which they did and both played excellently, so good that I didn't need any other batsman. A partnership of 213 for the 2nd wicket, Trescothick 142* - passing 6,000 ODi runs in the process - and KP 96*. Pollock 1-50 got the wicket of Vaughan.

Jones got Smith caught by KP (how fun!) at 2nd slip in the first over of the innings. AB and Kallis played aggressively for the 2nd wicket putting on 59 before Plunkett got Kallis for 27. Ab and Duminy put on 22 for the 3rd but the wicket of AB for 40 by Panesar led to a collapse, with Panesar taking 3 mid innings wickets (AB, Van Wyk and Rudolph). Davies got Duminy for 22 on return to finish his spell. White and Pollock tried to get their team to the tough target and did well by putting on 99 for the 7th wicket before White fell to Plunkett for 55. Pollock went to Jones for 57, Friend offered some fightback but Flintoff got him in the last over for 19. 237 all out, Monty 3-60, Flintoff 2-26 (7.2 overs) Plunkett 2-34, Jones 2-48 (8), Davies 1-62.

With the series wrapped up I decided to make one change, Horton in for Bell.

We lost the toss in the 5th ODI and were asked to field first. I thought we were in for a clattering on this docile pitch but Jones took Smith, AB and Kallis all in his first 4 overs! And it didn't stop there with every bowler getting in on the action, they were 54-7 at one point with AB scoring 15 the top scorer of the batsman! Monty bowled well, bowling his 10 overs for 9 runs and taking 2 wickets. Friend was the only one who looked like he wanted to set a total the all rounder scored 49 valuable runs and helped get South Africa up to 144. Joubert scoring 14 runs with him. Jones 3-44 was the pick of the bowlers, Monty 2-9, Plunkett 2-29, Davies 2-36 and Flintoff 1-24. Impressive stuff! The highest partnership was 38 for the last wicket.

This total looked like being a doddle and the openers made a good start with Tres and Vaughan putting on 102 before Kallis got Vaughan for 44. 23 was put on for the 2nd wicket between Tres and the up the order Prior, when Tres fell for 60. Prior finished off the innings with 2 sweet 4s through the off side. 27* at the end, horton just 4*. Joubert got Trescothick.

A fantastic series win, moves me up to 5th in the rankings for ODIs and if I win on my next tour to the West Indies I could move up to 4th!

The summer is a biggie, both the Antipodean countries come to town!
