Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

hahaha, Vaughan misses out. Typical. Very good start to the ODI series, a very convincing win. Also, a good win in the T20 match, albeit low-scoring. Very good work Sureshot ;)

2nd ODI, we won the toss and elected to bowl first.

They got a decent start with Ab and Smith putting 49 on the board before AB fell to Jones. Then the big partnership came as Smith and Kallis had no problems with our attack and put on a mammoth 146 for the 2nd wicket. Kallis eventually fell on 61 to the bowling of Panesar. From here on in the bowling dominated with Davies and Flintoff taking all but one of the last wickets as the bowled at the death. The South Africans had put on 41 for the 5th,6th and 7th wickets (total from all 3 wickets). Panesar got the big wicket of Van Wyk. They finished on 262 all out as Davies (4-43) and Flintoff (3-48) destroyed their innings.

Their bowlers got off to a good start as we lost several early wickets infact it lost us the game Joubert got Cook and Vaughan and Tres ran himself out whilst Compton was bowled by Pollock. Flintoff and KP came together and had to build the innings whilst the score was on 31-4. They did a good job but the task was too big, they batted brilliantly putting on 193 for the 5th wicket but we couldn't do anything due to the major collapse at the top. KP finished on 107* and Flintoff was bowled by Friend with the last ball of the innings for 91.

3rd ODI, one change, Colly in Compton out.

We were put in to bat by the Proteans and we made a decent start as Tres and Cook put on 66 for the 1st wicket before Cook fell for 14 to Nel. This innings was built on several decent partnerships. The opening stand was infact the biggest. Trescothick played well scoring 77 before Pollock got the better of him. And Colly scored 50* from 34 balls on comeback also passing 3,000 ODI runs at the time. Flintoff played a cameo of 25 at the end with Colly and Prior scored 17* off of 12 balls. The scoring rate was slow as we made 209-5. Pollock 3-51 the pick of the bowlers.

We made a good start with Davies and Jones taking early wickets. Infact we had them at 84-5 with Davies and Flintoff taking 2-46 each. Panesar though was not effective and he was going at 6 an over and it cost us, Colly bowled well taking 1-39. Van Wyk and Gibbs put on 87 for the 6th wicket before Gibbs fell for exactly 50, one of Davies victims. Van Wyk and Pollock put on 39 for the 7th wicket as they won by 4 wickets.

Back to back defeats.

Blackwell has been disappointing and could be dispatched for Lewis.

In 2nd match, brilliant rescue act from KP and Flintoff from 31-4! Otherwise, they might have collapsed below 100 also :p

In 3rd match, once again batting pulled England down. Excellent win for SA in both the games! :clap

4th ODI: Redfern in Cook out.

We chose to bowl on a good pitch. De Villiers fell early to Davies as we looked to get the spinners in fairly early on this spinning Old Trafford wicket. They played the seamers fairly well as Smith and Kallis put on 53 for the 2nd wicket before Smith fell for 58 to the bowling of Panesar. They had a decent start but the spinners really came into their own when they were bowling in tandem. Panesar did the damage at the top of the order with some massive wickets (Rudolph, Van Wyk and Duminy) They put some fight into their innings when Kallis helped add 32 for the 5th wicket with Gibbs and 30 for the 6th wicket with Friend. Then Blackwelll found the conditions to his liking and took 3 quick wikcets to leave them 153-9 but Friend and Nel put on 32 for the last wicket to leave us a target of 186. Panesar 4-31 and Blackwell 4-47. Davies 1-42 and Flintoff who bowled his 10 overs for just 23 runs.

So chasing 186 for victory we needed a decent start but we didn't get one as Tres fell early to the bowling of Joubert. But Vaughan and KP put on 49 for the 2nd wicket before Vaughan fell for 33 to Nel. Then KP and Redfern put on 46 for the 3rd wicket before Redfern fell for 28 on debut, a decent little knock. But Pollock got Redfern and then Colly fell to Nel for just a single! Kp was still in and was surely going to see us home? He and Flintoff added 29 for the 5th wicket before Fred fell for 13 to Kallis. Kp and Prior put on 35 for the 6th wicket to put us within touching distance before Kp fell for 73 to Friend. Prior saw us home with an unbeaten 21*. nel 2-45 was the pick of the bowlers.

5th ODI, unchanged. A massive game to help keep us in 5th or we could drop to 7th in the ODI rankings!

They chose to bat first on a flat track. Smith and AB put on 93 for the 1st wicket before Smith fell for 41 to the bowling of Collingwood. AB couldn't bat on much longer but did pass the half century mark before Colly also got him, this time for 60. Kallis and Duminy dominated the attack on this flat bed but luckily we got Kallis for only 40 off the bowling of Blackwell. Duminy and Van Wyk built another big partnership as Monty proved expensive, they put on 94 for the 4th wicket (the biggest partnership of the innings) before Duminy fell to Blackwell for 56. The innings was faltering as Van Wyk fell to Davies for 51. Gibbs came in at the end and hit 30* off of just 17 balls as they posted a target just short of 300 (292-7). Flintoff got the wicket of Rudolph. Colly 2-29 and Blackwell 2-64 were the pick of the bowlers.

We needed a good start in reply and got one as Tres and Vaughan put on 72 for the 1st wicket before Vaughan fell for 28 to the bowling of Nel. KP and Tres - my two best batsman - had the game under control as the run rate stayed at around 5.5 rpo. They put on 112 for the 2nd wicket before Tres fell for 86, to Joubert. We then suffered a massive collapse as everyone bar Collingwood fell (All the way down to and including Prior). The game had gone. Collys fight brought him and us 31 runs, but it proved too little. Jones batted well helpiong to put on 54 runs for the 7th and 8th wickets (With Colly and then with Davies). He fell last man for 32 as Pollcok finished with figures of 3-45. 273 all out. Joubert 2-32 and Kallis 2-68 bowled okay. Nel took 2 wickets but was expensive conceding 88 runs.

Squad for the tour of South Africa:

Vaughan, KP, Redfern, Bell, Horton, Trescothick, Cook, Prior, Davies, Colly, Flintoff, Blackwell, Jones, Davies, Panesar, Plunkett, Hoggard and Rashid.

Vs Lions, 3 day friendly.

Cook, Vaughan, KP, Bell, Horton, Flintoff, Davies, Plunkett, Rashid, Jones, Davies.

We won the toss and chose to bat first. Cook and Vaughan got a great start putting on 115 for the 1st wicket before Cook fell for 61. Vaughan fell in the next over for 59. KP was joined by Bell and they put on 51 for the 3rd wicket before KP was hit by a bouncer and had to retire hurt. Bell and Flintoff added 67 for the 4th wicket before Bell fell for 64 to the bowling of Langeveldt. Terbrugge grabbing the first 3 wickets. Flintoff was joined by the young keeper, Steve Davies, they added a mammoth 171 for the 5th wicket before Davies was bowled by Langeveldt for 74. Flintoff fell at the start of the 2nd session of Day Two for 131. 459=7 and I declared. Terbrugge 4-107 was the pick of the bowlers.

We got an early breakthrough with Jones showing his consistent form that he showed in the summer. Then Motaung and Ontong added 58 for the 2nd wicket before Motaung fell for 30 to the spin of Rashid. The middle order tried to fight and they did to an extent, Ontong and McKenzie putting on 37 for the 3rd wicket before Ontong fell for 41 to the bowling of Flintoff. Rashid picked up another wicket in the next over as the slim chance of victory was becoming just about attainable. McKenzie fought with 35 but fell after putting 31 on for the 5th wicket with Harris. Davies got the wicket. Harris made 32 but the Lions were all out for 187. Jones 3-35, Rashid 3-43 and Davies 3-47 all chipping in.

They followed on.........

They made a better fist of it second time around as we had just 2 sessions to get a victory. Motaung did well at the top scoring a good 83 beofre Rashid got another wicket. Ontong also performed ironically scoring exactly 41 again! Plunkett got his wicket. Harris also chipped in as he and Cook put on 90 for the 4th wicket, Cook ended up batting through finishing on 57*. harris made 47. Lions 280-8. Rashid 3-63 bowled well and gave me a good choice of playing two spinners. Davies 2-46, Plunkett 2-68 bowled well and Jones got a wicket.

KP's injury is horrible and he is out for 3 weeks, will definitely miss the first two tests, might be back for the third.

nice century by flintoff but the bowlers should have taken apart the lions

Unlucky in the ODI series against South Africa. Hopefully more luck on the tour to the same country! Bad news about KP, but plenty of batsmen there to cover for him!:D

Nice work Sureshot.

I am also doing one of these too as it happens. Did it on ICC01 had England to the best in the world on that and thought Id try on 06 too.

Anyone want to see my go so far?? Havent played it in a while but I think I've won all the series so far from the start upto the ashes in 07, :D

Havent played for ages as its on my brothers laptop and he broke it but its fixed now so I might bring the file onto this computer and play it on here.

So yeah is it worth seeing if I can better Sureshot?

Just read through the rest of the ODI's. Very good series, but as usual with England and one day cricket, they weren't ruthless. Love the writing sureshot, very engaging read, even though you just got through the facts most of the time.

Now onto the tour of SA, both sides will get bored of each other soon :p. Good start by England in the warm-up match, batted well and looked like they bowled well too, they just needed a bit longer to finish the game off. Shame about KP, but hopefully whoever steps in will take their opportunity and give Sureshot some selection problems :p. Also, will be watching Rashid closely.

Loving the story mate, keep the good work, and keep the updates coming thick and fast ;).
