Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

Great win by England! Collingwood and Strauss doing very well to make it a comfortable win! Panesar awesome also.

1st ODI vs New Zealand

Team: Tres, Strauss, KP, Vaughan, Colly, Flintoff, Prior, Lewis, Harmison, Anderson, Panesar.

We were put in to bat first on a decent pitch.

Tres fell early to the guile of Oram, but Strauss and KP got us back together but at a slow rate as Oram was particularly accurate. They put on 56 before KP went for 30. Strauss fell not long after for 43. Vaughan and Colly put on 34 before Colly went for just 12. Flintoff and Vaughan were aggressive and they got us within touching distance of 200, they had put on 53 before Vaughan went for an excellent 65. Flintoff and Prior put on 38 for the 6th wicket, Flitnoff 45* from 36 balls, Prior 14* from 13 balls. Wr finished on 224-5, probably 35 runs short imo. Oram 2-30, Tuffey and Franklin 1-34, Bond 1-56. Flintoff in the process of making an excellent finish to our innings passed 3,000 ODI runs.

Fulton fell early to Anderson as he was bowled by the Lancastrian. Oram and Fleming put on 130 for the 2nd wicket though as they took the attack to the bowlers and took the game from us. Oram finally went for an excellent 75 to Flintoff. Fleming stayed in despite two more falling around him (to Flintoff and Anderson) but was finally dismissed by Anderson for 94. Marshall finished off the innings with 30 as they got to 225-6 winning by 4 wickets. Flintoff (3-37) and Anderson (3-48) bowled well but none of the others looked threatening.

2nd ODI, Unchanged. Won the toss and decided to have a bowl.

Anderson got us off to a good start as we made early inroads. Oram though stuck around and continued his good form. Oram and McCullum put on 74 for the 5th before Oram went for 81 bowled by Flintoff. McCullum and Marshall put on 50 for the 7th wicket and Franklin had a flurry at the end making 27*. 240-7. Anderson 4-43, Flintoff 2-62, Harmison 1-39.

In reply we made a good start with Strauss and Tres putting on 54 for the 1st wicket before Strauss went for 24 run out. KP joined Tres and they made lightwork of the total putting on a mammoth 185 for the 2nd wicket before Vettori bowled KP for 84. Before that Tres had made another hundred in his awesome ODI form. 241-2 a nice comfortable win.

TresODINZ127.jpg

3rd ODI, as the pitch looks like a spinner I brought in Rashid for Lewis. We won the toss and will bowl first.

Fulton and Fleming got off to a good start before Fleming fell for 34 with 89 runs on the board. Monty got the wicket, caught behind. Fulton fell next over to Flintoff caught in the deep by Harmison. Oram and Vincent put on 54 for the 3rd wicket as they rebuilt the innings. Oram eventually fell to Rashid though as he went for 28. Amazingly in this innings all of the Kiwi batsman made double figures. McCullum was the only other notable score as he made 32 before falling to Flintoff. Panesar took the wicket of Ryder in his 2nd spell and Harmison got Franklin as the Kiwis finished on 239-8. Flintoff 3-39, Monty 2-47, Rashid 1-51 and Harmy 1-39.

Strauss and Tres made another fantastic start as they put on 137 for the 1st wicket before Tres went for 58 bowled by Gillespie. KP joined Strauss but Strauss fell just a few runs later for 85, caught at slip off of Oram, who was the tightest bowler once again. Our batsman took a liking to the bowling of Bond who went for 72 off of his 10 overs. Vaughan and KP put on 44 for the 3rd wicket before KP went for 34. Colly and Vaughan put on 28 for the 4th wicket as we closed in on victory, unfortunately Colly was dismissed for 17, Vaughan (35*) and Flintoff finished off the innings.

3rdODINZ.jpg

4th ODI, unchanged, lost the toss and we fielded first.

Harmison got the wicket of Fleming early as he was caught at midwicket. Fulton and Oram put on 41 for the 2nd wicket before Flintoff got the wicket of Fulton for 28 leaving them on 61-2. Oram fell not long after to the bowling of Collingwood. Vincent and Ryder put on 38 for the 4th wicket before Vincent went for 20, bowled by Panesar. Rashid, Panesar and Collingwood did lots of damage from here on in as we ended up bowling them out for 153. Ryder eventually fell to Rashid for 29. Colly 3-26, Monty 3-31, Rashid 2-14, Harmison 1-20 and Flintoff 1-35.

We only had 154 to chase but we suffered an early blow as Tres fell for jut 7. Strauss and KP were in at 10-1 and they played the Kiwis bowlers with ease and grace as they knocked off the runs, both passing 50 on the way. They put on 145 for the 2nd wicket to win by 9 wickets. KP 71* and Strauss 65*.

CollyNZ3for.jpg

5th ODI, as we had won the series 3-1 with only 1 game to go, I gave some of the fringe players a game. Cook, Bell and Horton in. Tres, Strauss and Colly out. Vaughan and Cook to open. Won the toss and will bat first.

Vaughan went early for 10, run out after taking a single to 2nd slip. Cook and kP put on 53 for the 2nd wicket as we looked to make a good total on a good pitch, but we scored way too slowly (I was day dreaming....). KP went for 23 bowled by Gillespie. Cook and Bell made the best partnership of our innings as they put on 74 for the 3rd wicket before Bell went for 28, lbw to Oram. As we looked to attack we lost wickets, Cook went for 82, passing 1,000 ODI runs in the process. 82 being his highest score. Horton made 20 on his 2nd appearance and Prior made 21 off of as many balls but we only managed 207-7, about 50 runs short. Gillespie 2-47, Franklin 2-48, Bond 1-36, Oram 1-39.

Fulton and Fleming made a good start putting 93 on for the 1st wicket before Fleming went for 47, caught by Prior off of Flintoff. Fulton and Oram put on 35 for the 2nd wicket before Panesar got the breakthrough, Fulton gone for 56, though it seemed in vein, and it was as Vincent and Fulton put on 80 for the 3rd wicket as they won by 8 wickets. Oram 58* and Vincent 41*.

Up next the summer of 2008.

Anderson is no longer in the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1st Test vs Zimbabwe

Tres, Cook, KP, Vaughan, Bell, Flitnoff, Davies (Prior is injured), Jones, Harmison, Panesar and Hoggard. Lost the toss and they chose to bat first.

Jones got a wicket in his spell with the new ball before Patel and Ferreira did some rebuilding with a 48 run partnership for the 2nd wicket, Monty then got the wicket of Ferreira for 43. Flintoff and Monty then took another 2 quick wickets, Patel and Tovo put on 77 for the 5th wicket in the biggest partnership of their innings, but Flintoff was on fire and took the wicket of Patel for 59. Ireland came in and played well, attacking the bowlers. The tail wagged with 111 runs scored between the 7th, 8th and 9th wicket partnerships. Ireland fell eventually for 53 and Tovo for 46. The last wicket fell on 291 with Monty getting the wicket of Dangarembiri, Flitnoff was the pick of the bowlers with 4-55, Jones 3-61 and Monty 2-56.

In reply we made a good start with Cook and Tres putting 58 on for the first wicket before Cook went for 35 to Ireland. Tres and KP also put on a decent partnership of 40 for the 2nd wicket before Tres went for 42. KP and Vaughan made the biggest partnership as we looked like putting on a big lead, thye added 91 before KP went for 72. Lots of partnership was the story of our innings as Vaughan and Bell put on 88 for the 4th wicket before Vaughan fell to Ireland for 79. We then suffered a bit of a collapse as both Bell and Flintoff fell not long after Vaughan did, Bell made 41. Davies and Simon Jones put on 88 for the 7th wicket as we went passed their total, Jones finally dismissed for 30. Davies went not long after for a good 62, we were all out for 382. Dangarembiri 4-103 and Ireland 4-121.

With a decent total we needed early wickets and we got that as Hoggard took 2 early wickets. Hove put some fight into their innings and added 34 for the 3rd wicket with Ewing befoe he fell for 16 to Jones. The Zimbabweans struggled and when Hove went for 29 bowled by Panesar it was all but done, Jones (3-40) and Flintoff (2-25) bowled well and Harmison picked up a wicket as they were bowled out for 112.

Chasing just 22 it was going to be easy and Cook and Tres finished 11* each.

2nd Test, won the toss and elected to bat first.

Team: Cook, Tres, Horton, Vaughan, Prior, Flintoff, Davies, Tahir, Jones, Panesar and Hoggard.

We made a good start as Cook and Tres put 64 on the board before Tres went for 42. Against a second rate attack we dominated the first session, Cook and Horton put on 69 before Horton went for 31. When the captain joined Cook they started to play some wonderful shots and they took the game away from the Zimbabweans, the partnership finally fell on 157 when Vaughan went for 79 in the meantime Cook passed his century. Cook and Prior put on 71 for the 4th wicket before Prior went for 25. Cook fell not long after for a brilliant 175. Flintoff and Davies got us past 400 and beyond as they put on 72 for the 6th wicket before Fred fell for 33. Davies fell not long after, for 44, a decent start to the young mans career. Simon Jones finished the innings with a flourish putting 50 on the for the last 2 wickets with Panesar and Hoggard, he was bowled for 36 to leave us 6 short of 500 on 494. Ireland 4-144, Dangarembizi 3-186, Ewing 2-9 and Utseya 1-109.

As Jones was still tired from batting I gave Tahir the new ball, after Hoggards tight first over it was time for his first ball in International Cricket, he got Ferreira first ball! Ewing then put on a partnership of 59 with Hove before Jones struck on his 3rd over. Ewing fell for 51 after a 3rd wicket partnership of 29, gone from the start of a majestic Panesar spell, who took 3 quick wickets (including Ewing). Sibanda came in and offered some resistance, for the 8th wicket he and Ireland put on 112 as they came close to avoiding the follow on but fell just short being bowled out for 291. Sibanda's 88 was in vain but a good effort from him and Ireland (46), Monty finished with a five for (5-66), Jones 2-42, Hoggy, Tahir and Flintoff with the other wickets.

They batted again and Hoggard got an early wicket but Ewing hit him for 3 4's in the next over so he was replaced by Tahir, he and Jones destroyed the top order of the Zimbabweans with Sibanda the only one to offer some resistance with 51 runs. Monty finished off the innings with 2-11 as they were bowled out for 139, losing by an innings and 64 runs. Tahir 4-40 and Jones 3-33 were the main destroyers.

In prior to the ODI series we had the obligatory 20-20.

Team: Tres, KP, Blackwell, Horton, Prior, Collingwood, Strauss, Tahir, Jones, Monty and Lewis. Vaughan misses out as we won the toss and decided to have a bat.

With the aggressive opening partnership of KP and Tres we got a great start as they put on 122 for the 1st wicket as they both passed half centuries, Utseya finally bowled Tres for 63, KP stayed in until the end making some runs with Horton (10) and Prior (11*), KP ended up 78* as we scored 168-3. Utseya 2-29.

Tahir and Jones opened the bowling and almost won it between themselves in those 8 overs, Tahir got a hat-trick and Jones took the openers, Jamba 18 offered some top order resistance but it was futile until Streak came in and smashed 47*, but they eventually were dismissed for 94, Monty taking the final wicket. Tahir was the star though finishing with figures of 6-29 and Jones with figures of 3-33.

cookZIM.jpg

Squad for the 3 match ODI series:

KP, Horton, Strauss, Tres, Vaughan, Prior, Davies, Collingwood, Flintoff, Blackwell, Tahir, Lewis, Jones, Panesar and Tremlett.

We were put in to bat after losing the toss. Horton, Davies, Lewis and Tremlett missed out.

Tres fell fairly early on a pitch that looked good for spin bowling, but Strauss and KP brought back some stability as they put on 62 for the 2nd wicket before KP went for 24. Strauss was playing well so far and he continued this with a brilliant partnership of 99 with Vaughan, who fell for 46 to Ewing. Colly got a first baller and Strauss fell not long after just 3 short of his century. Fred and Blackwell finished the 50 overs with a partnership of 29 for the 7th wicket, Flintoff 24* and Blackwell 14*. Ewing 3-67.

Could Zimbabwe chase down 236?

They got a good start as Jamba and Ferreira put on 81 for the 1st wicket before Jamba fell to Flintoff. Jamba was joined by Kulinga and they looked promising until Monty got the wicket of Jamba for 63. Monty and Blackwell came on and bowled all their overs in the middle of the innings and turned the game back in our favour, Blackwell bowling 10 overs for just 31 runs and with 2 wickets. Kulinga stayed in though and added 46 for the 6th wicket with Sibanda and 28 for the 7th with Ireland. They were 8 down and 12 runs from victory until Collingwood came on and took a wicket in his first and only over (I bowled out Fred trying to get wickets at the end) and Jones came on to wrap up the tail as we won by just 7 runs. Monty was the star though with 4-44.

SpinZim.jpg

2nd ODI, unchanged. They chose to bat this time.

They made a decent start putting 151 runs on for the first 4 wickets, Tahir getting the first wicket and Jones the second. Flintoff got the third wicket of Ewing and Monty got the big wicket of Jamba who made 58. But with some brilliant spin bowling Monty destroyed them and somehow we bowled them out for 187, Flintoff grabbing another and Blackwell getting one too! Monty 5-33, Flitnoff 2-31, Jones 1-27, Tahir & Blackwell 1-32.

Tres and Strauss put on 31 for the 1st wicket before Strauss fell for 10, Tres fell not long after for 23 as KP and Vaughan were left with 147 more runs needed. But they both played well and saw us home, KP 77* and Vaughan 68* a partnership of 147 saw us home to 188-2.

MontyZIM.jpg

3rd ODI, as we had won the series Horton came in for Collingwood.

As we lost the toss yet again we were put in to bat on a belter. We made a good start as Tres and Strauss put on 73 for the 1st wicket before Strauss fell for 27 to Dangarembizi, he also got the wicket of KP in his next over. But Tres and Vaughan put on 70 for the 3rd wicket as we looked like posting 275 at least. Vaughan went for 32 though as he was run out going for a single. Tres passed his hundred in a 43 run partnership with Horton for the 4th wicket, he eventually went for 110 bowled by Streak. Flintoff failed as we didn't look like making 250. Horton was joined by Prior though and they put on an unbeaten partnership for the 6th wicket of 63, Horton 45* and Prior 34*. 260-5.

A decent total to defend and we made a super start as Tahir and Jones got two early wicket each. Kulinga and Hove made something of a fight back with 53 for the 4th wicket and then 33 for the 5th between Hove and Sibanda. Blackwell took both their wickets though as we cruised to victory, they were bowled out for 132 in the end with Panesar and Flintoff taking the last two wickets.

Up next Tests vs South Africa.

1st Test vs South Africa, we lost the toss but were put in to bat.

Team: Cook, Tres, KP, Strauss, Vaughan, Flintoff, Prior, Tahir, Jones, Hoggard, Panesar. Bell misses out in favour of the seam of Tahir.

Tres fell early to Pollock as we looked to make a big total on a good pitch. Cook and KP put on 57 for the 2nd wicket before KP went for 29. Cook and Strayss put on 44 for the 3rd wicket before Coko fell for 46 bowled by Nel. Strauss and Vaughan couldn't capitalise and Strauss went for 41, Flintoff failed. We didn't look like making 300 let alone a big total when Prior joined Vaughan. But at last a keeper made a hundred for me as he and Vaughan put on a huge 284 runs for the 6th wicket before Prior went for 134, lbw to Govender, the end of a wonderful innings. Tahir came out to join Vaughan and they got us past 500 as they put on 76 for the 7th wicket before Tahir went for 33, Vaughan passed his double hundred in this partnership with a sweep for 4 off of Smith. He fell next though for 210 and we were eventually all out for 539. Nel 3-100, Friend 3-147, Polock 2-123 and Govender 2-126.

Smith and De Villiers made a decent start in reply as they put on 56 for the 1st wicket before De villiers was bowled by Jones for 34. Smith and Kallis put on a few runs for the 2nd wicket adding 35 before Smith went for 38. Panesar and Hoggard kept taking wickets as they struggled to put partnerships together. Gibbs made 46 runs as he was the highest scorer in their innings, Hoggard finished the game up taking 2 wickets in his final over, all out for 241 despite Gibbs and Friend putting on 48 for the 8th wicket. Hoggard 4-52 was the pick of the bowlers with Panesar 3-32 not far behind. Jones, Tahir and Flintoff all with a wicket each.

We asked them to follow on as they were 298 runs behind still. Smith and De Villiers put on 48 for the 1st wicket before AB went for 33 bowled by Flintoff, Jones and Flintoff took wickets early as they were 4 down for under a hundred as we looked like curising to victory on a pitch that started to deteriorate session by session. But their keeper Van Wyk played a wonderful innings putting on 114 for the 5th wicket with Gibbs before Gibbs went for 64. Van Wyk and Rudolph put on 84 for the 6th wicket before Van Wyk finally went for 108 a great innings. Monty got the wicket of Van Wyk, Gibbs went to Flintoff. Rudolph and Pollock pyut on 67 for the 7th wicket as they make us bat again, both went to Jones as the Welshman took all the remainings wicket, Rudolphy made 53 and Pollcok 40 as Jones finished with match changing figures of 6-77, Flintoff 3-52. 379 all out.

We needed only 82 runs to win and we made a fuss over it quite frankly. Tres went early and Cook only made 11, Vaughan made only 16 including 3 quick fours, but KP was the main stay making 28* finishing the game off with Prior, 82-5. Friend 3-23, Nel 1-2 and Govender 1-34.

82/5... Thats not a good sign from England. And SA is my fav for the next test! :) Go SA!!!!!

Great win for England and Vaughan truely deserved the MOTM for his double century . Great story mate . keep up the good work :cheers

nice stuff sureshot, great knock from Vaughan. I would post more often but half the time i just want to see how many posts in a row you can get :p

HaHa! I've not looked at Stueys progress actually! Tahir has dominated the county season. I'm considering dropping Tres atm his form just seems to be either 10-20 or a hundred.

2 changes for the 2nd Test. Plunkett in for Tahir and Bell in for Trescothick.

We elected to bowl first after actually winning a toss!

Hoggard got De Villiers out early lbw, but Kallis (70) and Smith (47) put on 116 for the 2nd wicket to get them back on track on a decent looking wicket. Jones destroyed the middle order in a vicious spell of bowling, after the big 2nd wicket partnership South Africa struggled along. They put on 69 for the 6th wicket between Duminy and Gibbs (37) before Monty broke it up. Duminy batted well and put on 60 for the 8th wicket with Friend (39). Plunkett got the wicket of Friend on his return to the side. 294 all out in the end with Jones (4-57) and Panesar (3-64) the pick of the bowlers. Hoggard also contributed with 2-67.

IN reply we needed a good start between Cook and Strauss and got one as they put on a mammoth 156 for the 1st wicket before Strauss was out for 83 to Friend who looked the most dangerous of the bowlers. Cook and Bell put on 101 for the 2nd wicket as we dominated the South African bowlers, Cook passed another Test hundred and Bell made 51, unfortunately Nel got Cook for 121 and Friend got Bell. KP and Vaughan came together as we looked to surpass their total and go onto a big lead. They did that and in fine style too as they put on 227 for the 4th wicket before Vaughan fell 3 runs short of his century, bowled by Govender! KP and Fred came together and destroyed their attack as we increased our lead even more! They put on 150 for the 5th wicket before Flintoff fell to Friend for 75. We declared once KP had reached his double hundred, 666-5 declared. Friend 3-220 bowling over 60 overs!

Hoggard got the early wickets of Smith and Kallis as he surpassed 300 Test wickets. AB and Duminy put on 49 for the 3rd wicket in an attempt to regain something but AB fell to Plunkett. Jones took a wicket in the next over as we dismantled them in a comfortable victory. Duminy and Gibbs put on 48 for the 5th wicket before Gibbs fell for 26 to Panesar. Hoggard was the star of the show though as he took all but 1 of the last wickets. Finishing with 6-38 and Panesar 2-22.

KP200RSA.jpg

Only have just seen this story and I am amazed at the effort you have put in, with sadly, minimal replies. Brilliant win for England, great knock by Pietersen and well done to Hoggard on the 300 wickets. Also, good to see Monty in amongst them :p. Keep the great work up sureshot...
