Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

Sorry for the delay, what with the Test match and all.

3rd Test, same team.

The pitch looked good but overhead conditions were dodgier than a Kebab after 25 pints. The South African bowlers made the most of the conditions and bowled well their first reward came after Cook and Strauss had put on 37 runs, Cook falling for 18, Pollock the wicket taker. Strauss fell just after also to Pollock. KP and Bell put on 44 for the 3rd wicket before firstly KP (20) and then Bell (33) fell to Nel who was in a magic spell. He continued his form as everyone struggled. We were 132-9 when Monty joined SiJo. Simon Jones batted well as did Monty, Jones batted for over 120 balls and Monty for over 55 balls. They put on 55 for the last wicket before Jones went for 41, Monty was 12*. 187 all out, but we did bat for almost the whole day. Nel 4-34, Polock 3-36, Govender 2-41 and Friend 1-61.

Smith and AB made a decent start before De Villiers fell to Plunkett. We then made some early inroads with Pluknett taking one more and Flintoff grabbing Smith and Kallis. Duminy and Van Wyk came together though and put on 107 for the 4th wicket before Van Wyk fell for 61 to Panesar. The batting didn't relent though as Duminy put on 109 for the 5th wicket - passing his hundred in the process - with White (a young batsman on debut). The last 4 wickets produced 62 runs as White finished the innings 87*. But they had ammased a mammoth 184 run lead with 3 days to go they looked in a wonderful position. Flintoff was the pick of the bowlers with 4-67, Plunkett with 3-97 bowled well. Monty 2-54 and Hoggard 1-77 finished off the other bowlers. Jones was wicketless and quite expensive.

We needed a good start but Strauss and KP couldn't make an impression as Friend took early wickets. Cook was fighting though and put on 98 for the 3rd wicket with Bell, but Bell went for 54, bowled by Govender. Cook and Vaughan kept the 3rd day interesting as including 2 wet spells in which we lost 3 hours play they put on 58 for the 4th wicket before the captain went for 30. Cook was fighting like a bulldog, not scoring heavily though only a S/R of 33. Flintoff couldn't add to the fight on day 4 though as he fell for just 15. Cook and Prior put on 58 for the 6th wicket before Cook finally fell for 113 batting for 7 hours! Prior was joined by Plunkett and playing the Durham man at No8 paid off as he and Prior put on 110 for the 7th wicket before Prior fell for 101 - his second Test hundred. We had done enough by now - on day Five - to save the game but I wanted some security and Plunkett and Jones put on 49 unbeaten for the 8th wicket before I declared. Plunkett 54* and Jones 25*. Friend 4-152 was the pick of the bowlers.

I declared just to give my bowlers some practice, and with Jones taking the wicket of Smith it kind of paid off. 65-1 De Villiers 41*.

Should get the crucial 4th Test tomorrow.

That 110 partnership was very crucial.... Some positive sign for England with Prior getting his second ton!

Yes, persistance pays off. Averages 37 now iirc. I'm hoping Plunkett can fill that 4th seamers slot. Rashid might get a game if we win the next test (and thus can't lose the series).

2-0 up with 2 to go.

Rashid might get a game if we win the next test (and thus can't lose the series).

You are really bringing up this man well.... Why not give a huge confidence on Rashid in crucial third test to win the series.. Who knws, he might be the major reason for a win too ;)

I named an unchanged team and won the toss and elected to bowl due to the cloud cover.

It was a big mistake to bowl first as Smith and De Villiers put on 59 for the 1st wicket before Flintoff bowled De Villiers. Kallis fell in the next over to Panesar - Kallis has been out of form this series - Smith and Duminy brought the innings back together with 116 runs for the 3rd wicket before Smith went for 93, caught behind off of Plunkett. Duminy and Van Wyk added 49 for the next stand before Hoggard bowled the dangerous Van Wyk. Duminy fell to Flintoff in Freds first over of his new spell, dismissed for 80. Gibbs and White gave us small chance of winning the test by putting on 102 for the 6th wicket and seeing them near 400 before White had to retire hurt after a nasty ball from Plunkett. He made 53 and Gibbs made 57 before being dimissed after a 45 run partnership with Pollock. The experience bowler made 46 whilst batting with the bowlers to see South Africa finish on 413. Flintoff 4-95 was the pick of the bowlers. Everyone else took 1 wicket, Pollock was run out.

In the first over of our innings Strauss was run out without facing! I brought Vaughan up to 3rd due to the brand new ball. He and Cook put on 53 for the 2nd wicket before Cook fell to Friend. Vaughan and Kp put on 127 for the 3rd wicket as we got back on track before KP went for 77 lbw to Pollock. We struggled from here on in to get any partnerships going, Vaughan and Bell put on 43 for the 4th wicket with Vaughan scoring his 20th Test hundred, he was out next ball. Bell was dismissed for 28 by Nel and Flintoff made 32 but we were below par. The 6th-9th wickets brought 50 runs, all out for 277. Pollock 3-62, Friend 3-74, Nel 2-37 and Govender 1-94.

We had avoided a follow on but they got off to an unbelievable start as Smith and De Villiers put on 164 runs for the 1st wicket to take their lead to 300 runs. Smith went bowled by Hoggard. De Villiers and Kallis (36) put on 57 for the 2nd wicket before De Villiers fell for a magnificent 127 off of the bowling of Plunkett. Their last 8 wickets could only produce 90 runs as Jones (3-63), Flintoff (2-52) and Panesar (2-68) destroyed their middle and lower order.

We had 4 sessions to bat as our target of over 400 was impossible. Strauss again fell early this time for just 4 as Friend got an early breakthrough. Vaughan again batted at 3 and he and Cook all but saved the game putting on an excellent 201 runs for the 2nd wicket, before Vaughan fell for 97, his second 97 of the series! Cook passed his century in an 86 run partnership with KP for the 3rd wicket. 127* for Cook, his 4th Test hundred of the summer and 10th of his career. KP was 51*.

2-0 with 1 to go, I'm now level with Australia and I think I go above them as I won the Ashes home and away......

It was the 4th test :p

Cook has scored centuries in the last 3 tests!

Bet he's taken about 400 balls to score each one though, he takes so long to score centuries for me, has hit 3 unbeaten centuries because he's batted through the innings and only scored about 120 runs, as opener. Good presentation though, come on England :D

Yeah sorry.. A typo.. Btw, Smith and Villiers were amazing! I wud say, that it was lucky enough for you to draw this match.. becos, with four sessions in hand, there shd have been more probability to get all out :p Well done in batting.

So with all safe now.. i.e series secured. May be we can see Rashid in action ;)

Normally about 300 balls for me :D Doesn't bother me when I have KP, Fred and Prior in the team. Vaughan scores fairly quickly when on fire too!

I have played the 5th Test, I want to get it up before the Test tomorrow morning....

What are Tahirs stats in all forms? I never thought of using him at international level

Tahir averages low 20s in FC and 26 in OD cricket.

5th Test.

3 changes. Horton, Rashid and Gibson in for Strauss, Monty and Hoggard. Gibson is a RF bowler from Sussex who has been on fire (re-gen)

We lost the toss and they chose to bat first.

Plunkett got Smith early with the new ball, caught at gully. They then put on 81 runs for the next 2 wickets with De Villiers playing quite well before Plunkett got him for 55, Jones took the wicket of Kallis. Duminy and Van Wyk put on 117 for the 4th wicket as they pushed on past 200, the good partnership ended when Flintoff bowled Van Wyk. Rudolph couldn't help his team falling to Plunkett. Gibbs and Duminy then put on 67 for the 6th wicket before Duminy was finally out, lbw to Rashid for 116. Nel batted well at the end scoring 25* and Gibbs was out for 39. They had put on 33 for the 9th wicket. The innings ended when Plunkett bowled Govender, completing his 5 wicket haul, 5-81. Jones 3-89 also bowled well, all out for 367.

The conditions didn't look good for day 3 with rain expected. Vaughan fell early to Govender, a hard early blow. Cook and Bell put on 70 for the 2nd wicket before Bell fell to Nel for 43. KP joined the in form Cook and they put on a mammoth 147 runs for the 3rd wicket as we went well past 200. Friend broke the partnership as Kp fell for 70 caught by Van Wyk behind. Horton couldn't do much as he and Cook only put on 37 for the 4th wicket before he was run out. Cook also fell for another hundred this time out for 113 bowled by Friend. Flintoff and Prior put on 87 for the 6th wicket before the aggressive Flintoff fell for 77 (he had scored some runs in the last partnership) Prior and plunkett put on 59 for the 7th wicket but the last 3 bowlers couldn't help Prior to another hundred as he finished 73*, Govender took the last 4 wickets for just a dozen runs. 452 all out Govender 5-93, Nel 2-61 and Friend 2-153.

We had a small chance of winning if we bowled them out cheaply on Day 4. Plunkett got the wicket of AB early as we got an early morale booster, they had put on 45 for the 1st wicket. Smith and Kallis brought the innings back on track putting on 103 for the 2nd wicket before Jones bowled Kallis for 53. Rashid did some damage in the middle order dismissing Van Wyk, Smith (65) and Gibbs. We had a slight sniff but Duminy was keeping the innings together puttong on 30 with Rudolph before being bowled by Jones, Simons 100th Test wicket. Duminy and Pollock though put on 123 for the 7th wicket as Pollock scored 63 and Duminy 76, they declared on 345-8 (Kp getting Duminy and Jones getting Pollock. Rain on Day Five had ruined the game we only managed 8 overs, finishing on 34-1 COok 17* and Bell 13*, Friend got Vaughan for 4.

20/20 international vs South Africa.

Team: Trescothick, Blackwell, KP, Compton, Clarke, Flintoff, Horton, Prior, Plunkett, Jones, Panesar, won the toss and decided bowl.

AB and Smith got a good start putting on 54 for the 1st wicket before Flintoff bowled Smith. The bowling off the spinners was crucial as they were excellent with their 8 overs going for just 32 with Blackwell getting Duminy for 31. He and Gibbs had put on 56 for the 5th wicket before Plunkett bowled Gibbs. AB earlier had gotten 37 before being caught at mid wicket off of Flintoff. Flintoff 3-30 was the pick of the bowlers, Blackwell 1-21, Monty 0-11, Plunkett 1-35. Jones was quite expensive and Clarke bowled 1 over for 16.....

We got a decent start as Blackwell and Tres put on 63 for the 1st wicket before Blackwell fell for 21. Friend getting his wicket. KP and Tres put on 67 for the 2nd wicket before Tres went for an excellent 74. Kp finished 33* and Flitnoff 9* from 3 balls. A win by 7 wickets.

Squad for the ODI series with South Africa at home:

KP, Vaughan, Compton, Redfern, Trescothick, Prior, Cook, Davies (WK), Blackwell, Flintoff, Collingwood, Jones, Panesar, Lewis and Davies. Redfern, Davies (WK), Lewis and Collingwood miss out for the 1st ODI.

They elected to bat first after the winning the toss up in Durham.

They made an okay start with AB and Smith putting on 42 for the 1st wicket before Jones got his first of the day bowling Smith for 13. De Villiers fell not long after, to Davies getting his first international wicket, as we made decent inroads. Panesar carrried on the goodwork dismissing Kallis, Panesar also got the wicket of Rudolph as my spin twins did an excellent job. Van Wyk and Gibbs managed to get some stability back together putting on 54 for the 5th wicket before Flintoff bowled Gibbs for 37. Van Wyk and Pollock played well putting on 82 for the 6th wicket giving them a chance of posting 200+. Van Wyk finally was dismissed for 70 as Davies bowled well at the death, he also got Pollock for 36. They finished on 216-7. Davies on debut bowled 3-40, Monty 2-45, Flintoff 1-37, jones 1-62 and balckwell 0-32, all from their allocated 10 overs.

Chasing 218 for victory we needed a good start. Cook fell early though as Joubert got an early wicket. Trescothick fell in the next over as Friend looked like making us pay for poor shots. Vaughan joined Pietersen as we looked in trouble, but the two talented batsman played some brilliant cricket as they put on 193 for the 3rd wicket almost single handedly getting the target for us, agonisingly Vaughan fell for 98, with just 7 runs required for victory. Compton hit the winning runs with a boundary. Nel got Vaughan, caught behind!

A good 7 wicket victory for us, Vaughan falling 2 runs short of what would be his maiden ODI hundred. Kp finished on 98* finishing his great form and passing 3,000 ODI runs. Vaughan now averages 30.18 in ODIs for me :D

Can't believe Vaughan couldn't score his first hundred though! It's tough to get ODI hundreds batting at 4 behind, Tres, KP and Cook.
