Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

Absolutely, no dropped catches in it. 1 ball that went airbourne, off the spinners from Cook.

I made one change, bringing in Rashid for Jones. We lost the toss and Lara chose to bat.

Hoggard got two early wickets of Gayle and Hinds, both bowled to leave the Carribean team 6-2. Lara and Chanderpaul came together to help get the WIndies back on track on a decent batting pitch at Headingley. Flintoff continued his run of lacking the wicket taking ability just 12 wickets this summer. He didn't look threatening, I turned to my spin twins and Panesar bowled Lara for 45, a solid partnership of 103 with Chanderpaul. He and Sarwan added a further 38 runs before Rashid had Chanderpaul caught at point for 67. Sarwan and Ryan Hinds kept a bit of the middle order momentum going as they played the two spinners well. They added 58 runs before Flintoff had Ryan Hinds caught at Mid-On, thus becoming Flintoffs 200th Test victim. Sarwan who was nearing 50, had to bat with the tail and he did alright, despite his partners always getting out, he passed 50 and got to 82 before falling lbw to Panesar. Anderson took the wickets of Baugh and Mohammed to continue his fine form. Panesar wrapped up the innings with the dismissal of Collymore. 248 all out. Panesar 3-39, Hoggard 2-38, Anderson 2-50, Rashid 2-53 Flintoff with the other wicket.

A disappointing performance by WIndies gave us a good chance of getting a big lead. Trescothick and Cook struggled with the early swing, they both went fairly early, Cook to King and Tres to Collymore. The score was 39-2. Strauss and KP played well adding 67 before KP went for 39 caught by Baugh off of the bowling of Juggernauth. Bell joined Strauss and they set about getting us past the West Indies total. They both played well, both very typical innings, Bell was more the aggressor. They both soon passed 50, the West Indies spin duo didn't trouble them and they both got through to brilliant centuries in a stand of 174 for the 4th wicket before Bell went for 104. Strauss and Flintoff added 50 for the 5th wicket before Strauss went for 110. Flintoff and Nash added 28 but Flintoff fell 5 short of his half century. Nash and Rashid helped us past 400 and eventually past 425 as Nash passed 50, Nash went for 69, though Rashid added 44 with Anderson as Rashid himself got his maiden test 50. We were eventually bowled out for 481. Mohammed 4-176, Collymore 4-99, King and Juggernauth with the other wickets.

The West Indies got off to a fairly decent start, making runs, though they did lose Gayle early to Hoggard, and Chanderpaul went to Anderson. Wavell Hinds and Lara did well, but Panesar kept taking regular wickets. The West indies stuttered along, losing regular wickets but keeping the score going up. Ryan Hinds and Mohammed added 62 for the 7th wicket, but Mohammed went for 22, the West Indies hopes were long gone. Hinds did get the scores level and eventually 8 past, but he ran out of partners finishing on 80 not out. Lara also made a half century, getting 56. Panesar was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-68 and propelling him to the Man of the Match award. Anderson 2-49, Rashid 1-16 (Baugh C&B). Flintoff and Hoggard with the other wickets.

We needed only 9 runs and got them without losing a wicket.

With Vaughan back from injury I had to re-select him. Rashid misses out, so effectively only 4 bowlers.

We won the toss and decided to have a bat on a pitch that offered something for the pacers.

We lost Tres for 9, bowled by Jeremy. Tres has scored only 136 runs in his other test innings, excluding his big 169*. Cook and Strauss did some rebuilding and got the innings back on track adding 78 for the 2nd wicket before Collymore got Strauss lbw for 29. In the meantime Cook had passed 2,000 Test runs. Jeremy and Collymore weren't letting our batsman get out of the rut. We added another 31 runs before KP went for 24 to Hinds. Vaughan made only 11 before being bowled by King, who also got Bell out cheaply. Cook had passed 50 a while back and was on 82 before getting bowled by Jeremy. The extra batting wasn't seemingly working, Flintoff and Anderson added 45 for the 8th wicket though to help us past 200 and onto 234 before Collymore wrapped the innings up. Flintoff 29, Anderson 28. Jeremy 4-60, Collymore 3-60, King 2-51 and hinds 1-40.

They got off to a decent start, 32 before Anderson got Wavell Hinds. Flintoff nabbed Gayle for 31. They had back to back partnerships of 33 to leave them at 115-3 but we started bowling well and dismissed them for just 135! Flintoff (3-23) and Anderson (3-29) did the damage to the top order then Bell (2-1) and Panesar (2-33) cleaned up the tail. Chanderpaul 36 was the only one that fought off the middle innings attack.

With a 99 run lead I was looking to capitalise on this. Cook and Tres fell early though to leave us at 19-2! Collymore got Tres and Jeremy got Cook. Strauss and KP got us back into the game batting for 3 tough sessions in hard batting conditions. They both passed 50, KP typically being the more aggressive. With the score approaching 200 and KP approaching another test hundred he dissapointingly spooned a Reon King bouncer to square leg, gone for 98! Strauss followed 8 runs later for 67, gone to Collymore. 200-4. Bell joins Vaughan. Bell gets dropped on 12 and looked to make them pay. He did just that as both he and Vaughan passed 50 before the end of day 3. They batted till half way through the 2nd session of day 4. I declared on 413-4 as Bell reached his century, Vaughan had earlier reached his century. 109* for Vaughan 100* for Bell. A partnership of 213 for the 5th wicket.

Chasing 512 it was always going to be tough to bat out 4 1/2 sessions. We got early wickets with Hoggard (Gayle and Chanderpaul) and Anderson (Lara) striking early to leave them 26-3. Hinds and Sarwan put some fight up in the middle of the innings adding 77 for the 4th wicket before Panesar had Hinds caught behind for 55. Sarwan fell 17 runs later for 40, this time bowled by Panesar. Ryan Hinds and Samuels faced an impossible task but they did bat well keeping Panesar and Flintoff at bay. They had got the score to 219-5 just one short of the hundred partnership when Flintoff bowled Ryan Hinds for 61. Baugh made a quick fire 18 before falling to Anderson. Anderson then cleaned up 9, 10 and Jack to get himself figures of 5-40. 242 all out, a win by 270 runs.

Anderson was easily the pick of the series 27 wickets @ 17.4 runs. Stauss, Bell, Vaughan, KP all made good contributions. As did Tres, though his form other than the big one was dissapointing. Also the finding of Nash was big in this series.

20-20 and ODIs to come then off to Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Squad for 20-20: Trescothick, Flitnoff, KP, Loye, Malick, Collingwood, Strauss, Nash, Lewis, Anderson, Panesar. Cook is 12th man. Malick is a RHB, RMF all rounder from Kent.

We won the toss and decided to have a bowl on a pitch that offered something for the bowlers.

Lewis and Anderson took 3 early wickets to leave the touring party 12-3. Lewis being particularly effective. Hinds and Sarwan added 95 for the 4th wicket to get them back on track. Monty being a little expensive, the new boy Malick bowled 4 overs for 12! They just got to 120-6. Lewis 2-22, Anderson 2-42, Flintoff and Panesar one each.

I opened with Tres and Flintoff to get some good momentum in the innings. With the target being fairly small it was quite easy. Flintoff made a good knkock of 23 from 19 balls with 4 4s. He and Tres put on 51 for the 1st wicket. KP joined Tres and they both played really well, particularly against Juggernauth. Tres 58* (50 balls) KP 40* (37 balls) in a 70 run partnership to see us home by 9 wickets.

15 Man squad for the 5 match ODI series vs West Indies:

Cook, Strauss, KP, Vaughan (in good form), Tres, Flintoff, Loye, Nash, Collingwood, Loudon, Mahmood, Anderson, Panesar, Lewis, Tremlett.

1st ODi, lost the toss and Lara chose to bat, my team: Tres, Vaughan, KP, Strauss, Loye, Collingwood, Flintoff, Nash, Lewis, Anderson and Panesar.

Lewis and Anderson got good starts with the ball again, both taking early wickets. Lewis got Gayle and Anderson got Wavell Hinds. Chanderpaul and Lara had a tough job on their hands on a good batting track. They played well though to get the West Indies back on track. They put on 105 before Lara was out lbw to Collingwood. Sarwan didn't make many runs, Collingwood took his wicket he also did for Chanderpaul who went for 82. Bravo and Ryan Hinds played well though putting on 61 for the 6th wicket, before hinds fell for 36 to Flintoff. Bravo didn't get much support from the other end in the last 8 overs but he got himself to a 41 ball half century before falling to a run out. Flintoff and Anderson took another wicket each, as the West Indies finished on 255-8. Collingwood 3-54, Anderson 2-51, Flintoff 2-53 and Lewis 1-33.

The reply got off to a good start, mainly through an on fire Trescothick, we were on 43 when Vaughan fell for 9 to Juggernauth. Their spinners straggled the middle order as everyone but Trescothick struggled. We lost Strauss, Kp and Loye in the space of 46 runs. Tres and Colly put on 44 for the 5th wicket but again another player went. Flintoff fell to Mohammed, this run chase is a bit of a shocker atm. Trescothick really is playing well and puts on 49 with Nash (27) before he fell to Bravo. Tres passed his 100 in this partnership. The tail couldn't do anything though as we fell 9 runs short on 246-9, Tres 141*. Mohammed 4-50, Juggernauth 3-37. Jeremy and Bravo with the other wickets.

2nd ODI

Loudon in for Vaughan on a spinning track, we lost the toss again but this time were put in 1st. Tres and Strauss got us off to a good start off of their 2 seamers! Strauss was dismissed for 38, gone to Juggernauth with a partnership of 72. KP and Loye failed in the middle order again, Tres also went in this same passage, for 46. Loudon joined Collingwood as they looked to rebuild against some good spin bowling. Thye added 48 for the 5th wicket before Colly was bowled by Ryan Hinds. Loudon and FLintoff played well in the last 10 overs with an unbeaten 65 run partnership for the 6th wicket, Loudon passed 50 and finished on 64* from 58 balls. Flintoff a run a ball 29.

In reply they got off to a good start, before Gayle went for 39 to the off spin of Loudon. Flintoff in his second spell got the wickets off Wavell Hinds and Shiv Chanderpaul. Lara and Sarwan put on 59 for the 4th wicket. Lara was batting well. Thye were about 50 runs from victory, with Bravo and Baugh the only notable batsman to come. Loudon got Bravo out for just 11 but the target kept coming down and despite Anderson getting the with of Baugh. Lara (79*) and Mohammed finished off the innings 231-7. Loudon 2-44, Flintoff 2-42, Anderson 1-44.

I bowled KP for 3 overs, he went for 20, in the end this possibly cost us as they had 1 over left.

first match was really close, tresco played an amazing innings
second match was pritty close too, lara was the difference maker though

For the crucial 3rd ODI I brought in Tremlett for Lewis as I looked for more wicket takers due to Monty being out of form.

We won the toss and I chose to bowl.

We got off to a good start with two early wickets, Anderson with both wickets. This pitch offered a little for the bowlers but in general a good pitch, overcast though. Chanderpaul and Lara brought some momentum back to the innings though as they put on 55 for the 3rd wicket before Lara is bowled by Panesar for 36. Sarwan couldn't add to the teams score as Flintoff continued his decent run. Ryan Hinds and Chanderpaul put on 29 for the 5th wicket, but they were batting slowly with none of the 5 bowlers going over 4. Hinds went to Tremlett. The other batters faltered but Dave Mohammed helped the in form Chanderpaul to get to 175-8 from 50 overs. Chanderpaul 81, Anderson bowled him on the penultimate delivery. Anderson 4-32, Flintoff 2-29, Monty 1-37, Tremlett 1-38.

The score was small but weirder things have happened and given our two recent losses nothing was guaranteed. Fortunately Tres and Strauss played really well to help seal the win. They both passed fifty, though Strauss fell on 132 for 63. KP made 21 before being bowled by Collymore. They bowled fairly well but were about 60 runs short. Loye (11*) and Trescothick (77*) finished off the innings.

AndersonvsWI.jpg

Strauss and Trescothick played awsome. James Anderson bowled a good spell. An easy win there for England

4th ODi, a must win game. The pitch didn't look like suiting the spinners so I dropped Panesar and brought in Mahmood.

We won the toss and chose to have a bat.

Tres and Strauss got us off to a slow start, in the very important game. Strauss eventually went though when the score was on 56, after 21 overs! Tres and KP played well though, with Tres continuing his fine form and KP finding some of the form he lost. They played aggresively too and Tres had just passed 5,000 ODI runs. They put on 104 before KP went for 53 to a good bit of bowling by King. Loye came in but failed yet again, but did put on 30 with Tres. Collingwood came in and boosted the run rate even more, Tres finally went for 88 gone to Bravo. Flintoff came in and scored 20 off of just 9 balls, Colly went in the last over for 49, Nash made just 2 singles in 2 balls. King 2-51, Bravo 2-70, Hinds 1-45 and Taylor 1-64.

For the first time in the series we didn't break the first wicket partnership and Gayle and Wavell Hinds put on 81 for the first wicket before Wavell went for 45 to the bowling of Anderson. Lara came in at 3 and carried on the momentum, though Gayle fell to Mahmood for 56. Chanderpaul fell for just 11, to the bowling of Flintoff. 3 down now but in control as our bowlers were all expensive (Why didn't I pick Lewis?) Flintoff was going at over 8 an over! Mahmood nearing 7. Lara and Sarwan put on a big partnership to see them within 40 runs before Lara went for 41 to the bowling of Anderson. Sarwan played excellently to see the WIndies to a ODi series win, finishing on 98*. The bowlers were poor barring the efforts of Anderson.

SeriesLostWIODI.jpg

As the 5th ODI was a bit of a deadpan match I decided to bring in Vaughan for the out of form Loye and Panesar in for Mahmood. We lost the toss and Lara chose to bat.

We got a good start again with Anderson and Tremlett taking 3 early wickets plus the run out of Lara. It was up to the middle order to bat the WIndies out of this hole. That man Sarwan was brilliant again as he was the master of the middle order revival, Collingwood bowled well during the middle overs, Sarwan and Ryan Hinds put on 51 for the 5th wicket, Sarwan and Bravo put on 75 for the 6th in a brilliant revival. Sarwan passed another fifty. Sarwan eventually fell to Collingwood (Like Hinds) Baugh helped the WIndies add 54 for the last 3 wickets, finishing on 218-8 Baugh on 33*. Collingwood 3-40, Anderson 2-46, Tremlett 1-39 and Flintoff 1-49.

On a pitch that was offering a bit to the spinners (they had 3 Hinds, Mohammed and Juggernauth) I needed a good early start to salvage some pride. Tres and Strauss put on 34 for the first wicket, but Strauss fell to a run out. KP came in but failed. Colly was batting at 4 and put on 34 with another good innings from Tres. But he fell to Juggernauth. Vaughan came in and put on 35 for the 4th wicket with Tres, but the Somerset opener fell for 88. Vaughan played okay for his 42, but the middle and bottom order completely collapsed over the spin bowlers and we were all out for 201. Mohammed 4-42, Hinds 2-32 and Juggernauth 2-56.

Dissapointing end.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand tours up next.

Who will be picked?

Squad for a 3 Test & 3 ODI tour of Sri Lanka:

Strauss, KP, Vaughan (C), Loye, Bell, Horton, Nash, Tres, Cook, Prior, Collingwood, Flintoff, Tremlett, Anderson, Panesar, Rashid, Jones and Hoggard.

Three day friendly vs Singha, won the toss and chose to bat.

Team:

Tres
Cook
Strauss (C)
Horton (I picked him due to an average of 72 for Lancs)
Bell
Flintoff
Prior (Good end of season, also I wanted to try him as Nash had wained a little, just to see how he went)
Rashid
Jones
Tremlett
Hoggard

(Anderson and Panesar rested along with others, just wanted to try them out really).

Tres and Cook got us off to a good start before Tres fell for 31 with the score on 80. Cook and Strauss added about 30 for the 2nd wicket before Cook fell for 55. Strauss was joined by Horton. They enjoyed an unbelievable partnership of 229 for the 3rd wicket before Strauss fell on 125. Bell then joined Horton and another big partnership ensued. 139 this time before Horton went for a magnificent 165. Bell followed not long after for 79. Flintoff and Prior played very aggressive innings, and put on 144 for the 5th wicket before Flintoff went for 76. Prior went on to bat with the tail but fell for 98. 658-8 Dec.

We needed a good start and got one when Hoggard anf Tremlett took 4 early wickets between them. Only one batsman actually did anything Arumathanthri made 83*, Rashid cleaned up the lower order and tail taking 5-21. 160 all out, Hoggard 2-15, Tremlett 2-34 and Flintoff 1-32.

We asked them rather unsurprisingly to bat again. They made a slightly better fist of it this time with several small partnerships but only one big on 51 for the 2nd (if you can call that big). Hoggard took early wickets and Jones bowled brilliantly taking 4-45. Weeraratne made 83 and five other batsman made 15 but it was to no avail as we won comfortably, 226 all out. Hoggard 2-51, Rashis 2-56, Flintoff and Tremlett took 1 wicket each.

A good performance but I have so many question marks over the first test.

Prior or Nash?

If I bring KP and Vaughan back in (surely I will?) who do I drop?

One spinner or two?

Anderson will come back in but who drops out Jones or Tremlett?

This will be fun.

:laugh

Looking forward to the upcoming tours, expecting England to dominate the tests then fall flat on their arses in the ODs

Not my fault....

KPs form is a worry at the moment, could he be dropped?

For the last 2 hours, through dinner too, I've been thinking of getting 11 out of that 18!
