Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

Due to Priors poor form I brought in Foster, I also brought in Mascarenhas for Shah as I wanted a bit more depth in bowling without having someone like Anderson at 8! Harmison missed out on this game.

We won the toss and decided to bat first on a pitch which would suit the spinners.

Our start was very poor as Vaughan, Strauss, KP and Loye all fell without helping the cause, we were 64-4 when Flintoff joined Cook who was 32* at the time. They put on 108 for the 5th wicket, it was the only partnership of note before Cook fell for 85. Flintoff batted well with with the tail, adding some vital runs before being bowled for 94. Anderson made 21 batting with Panesar and Hoggard as we get past 250 and onto 263. We had 5 partnerships of 20-26 in this innings. Mohanty 3-59, Singh 3-98, Kumble and Rao 2-50.

We didn't have a mass ammount of runs to play with but we got off to a great start as Hoggard and Anderson kept taking wickets and destroying India. Hoggard got Sehwag for a duck with just the 5th ball of the innings which was also his 250th Test Wicket. It was 49-7 when Kumble joined Dravid, they put on 43 for the 8th wicket before Kumble was bowled by Panesar, Rao went in the same over. Dravid and Mohanty put on 37 for the last wicket to take India past 100 and onto 129. Anderson 4-37, Hoggard 4-46 and Panesar 2-19. A wonderful bowling performance.

In our second innings we got off to a good start of 54 between Cook and Vaughan before Cook went for 32 caught at slip off of Kumble. Vaughan and Strauss played patiently in tough conditions and kept the innings going at a decent pace. They put on 85 for the 2nd wicket before Strauss fell for 38. Vaughan and KP put on 42 for the 3rd wicket before KP went for 22. Loye and Vaughan put on 52 for the 4th as Vaughan dominated, unfortunately Loye went for 20. He kept batting and eventually passed 3 figures with a cover drive off of Mohanty, he fell on 126 bowled by Kumble. We got to 302 in the end.

India needed 437 to win and got off to a bad start when yet again Hoggard struck in his 1st over, bowling Jadhav with his 6th ball, again for a duck. Sehwag and Tendulkar put on 142 for the 2nd wicket before Sehwag fell for 69 to Hoggard. Tendulkar and Dravid put on 49 for the 3rd wicket but Sachin fell on 99 to Flintoff. Dravid and Laxman put on 86 for the 4th wicket as India got a bit too close for comfort. Laxman went for 48, bowled by Pietersen. Dravid did well batting with Dhoni and the bowlers but we kept taking wickets, more precisely Hoggard did. He got Dhoni and then got Dravid out for 93 as we closed in on victory. Panesar took another wicket, that of Singh. But Hoggard finished the job bowling Mohanty for the victory, and for his 5th for.

Mascarenhas and Foster didn't do too much but as we have already wrapped up the series they will get another chance. Mascarenhas had one dropped chance, but was economical going at under 3 an over.

how did Hoggard not get man of the match? Good win Sureshot, also i think you need to change the thread title :p

126 on a turning pitch against that attack was pretty good.

Yes I will change the title of the thread.

9 wickets in a match is an incredible acheivemt, especially if it's on a spinners wicket like you said and he's a quick, also it was against Indias batting!

Yeh, I was a little surprised I didn't need Monty more 49-7 before I needed to bring the Mon on in the first innings.

PS: On the game itself I'm having great fun when starting the game up, it says MCF cannot operate and needs to close. I close it, try it again and it works. Weird. Also I went online as it says to do that to get it patched and it did nowt.

Loye has failed to really impress in his first 4 test innings:( But he will succeed:D

Great wins to go 2-0 up in the series, with Vaughny get MOTM both times. Incredible chase in the 1st game and incredible bowling against a fantastic Indian batting line up in the first innings of the second test.

Hello again.....

3rd Test vs India.

My team:

Cook, Trescothick, Strauss, KP, Vaughan, Flintoff, Foster, Chapple, Anderson, Hoggard and Panesar. Harmison misses out as I want to lengthen the batting with Chapple who earns his Test debut. Loye and Mascarenhas are dropped.

We lost the toss and were asked to field first.

Sehwag and Jadhav put on 51 before Hoggard gets Sehwag. Tendulkar joins Jadhav and they keep hitting the boundaries on a decent batting pitch as our bowlers have no luck. Panesar eventually got Jadhav caught at Silly point attempting to sweep, Jadhav gone for 56, a partnership of 75. Dravid joins Tendulkar and the two put on a big partnership as we struggle on Day One. They put on 123 before the new boy (Chapple) gets Dravid out lbw. The Indians suffer a rather big collapse as Panesar gets the wickets of Tendulkar and Dhoni. Hoggard takes the other wickets and gets 5-49, Panesar 3-70.

We lose early wickets to Mohanty and Rao as we fail to build any significant partnership, our highest being 31 between Strauss and Foster. Strauss made 37 and Foster 33 as they were the only ones who looked like scoring runs. We were bowled out for 127. Singh 5-29, Mohanty 3-33, Rao and Kumble 1 wicket each.

Despite actually scoring 199 runs less we were asked to bat again :mad

We made a better fist of it this time around, though Cook and Tres both failed, Kp and Strausss put on 153 for the 3rd wicket before Strauss fell for 76. KP fell not long after for 78 and Vaughan also failed. Flintoff and Chapple put on 79 for the 7th wicket before Chapple went for a very important 33 runs. Flintoff went on to make 90 before being bowled by Harbhajan. Flintoff and Anderson put on 44 for the 8th wicket. 340 all out, Rao 4-72, Mohanty 3-107, Singh 2-103 and Kumble just a single wicket.

They had 141 to chase. Anderson got Sehwag out for 20 when the score was on 28 and Jadhav when the score was on 42. But Sachin and Dravid put on 98 for the 3rd wicket before Chapple got Tendulkar when the score was on 140, Dravid hit a boundary to win the game, past mid-on. Tendulkar 57, Dravid 54*. Anderson 2-67 and Chapple 1-30.

My 20-20 game. Not much to say, Sehwag was brilliant, Jimmy was the best bowler. Strauss and Tres did well but in the end it was just too much.

Start of the 3 ODI series, a must win otherwise I lose 2 points in the table and India gain 2 and as I am level with India and 2 behind the next placed team, defeat would be demoralising.

Squad:

Strauss, KP, Loye, Vaughan, Chopra (in great county form), Trescothick, Cook, Davies, Collingwood, Flintoff, Harmison, Anderson, Monty, Lewis and Tremlett.

1st ODI, lost the toss and were put in to bat first.

Team: Vaughan, Tres, Strauss, KP, Loye, Collingwood, Flintoff, Davies, Lewis, Anderson and Panesar

Vaughan and Tres get off to a slow start (3 an over for the first 10) before Vaughan fell for 18, putting on 47 with Tres. Tres and Strauss put on 58 for the second wicket before Strauss went for 31.Tres followed not long after for a very good 58. Loye and KP decided to attack and we needed it, they hit 129 for the 4th stand in just 94 balls! Loye falling for 72 from 52 balls his 7th 50 in 15 ODIs. Collingwood and Flintoff didn't have much balls to face but both contributed albeit very small. Colly 10 from 5, Flintoff 3 from 4. Kp finished 69 not out from the same number of balls. 266-5 a good effort, helped by a stunning partnership. Singh 3-39, Kumble 2-60 and significantly on my part Sharma 0-78 from 10 overs.

Sehwag and Dhoni got off to a good start, getting to 63 before Dhoni fell to Flintoff. From then on Collingwood was stunning with the ball, picking up regular wickets, Monty was expensive going at over 7s. Lewis was economical too 10-1-33-0. The Indians struggled to build partnerships, only one of the top 8 struggled to reach double figures. Flintoff though 3-32 and more importantly Collingwood 6-43 from 8.1 overs were the destroyers, KP 1-6 from 2 came on as Monty was being expensive. Sehwag top scorer with 45. Needless to say we won as they got 188.

A fantastic start.

The all important 2nd ODi came around, I remained unchanged.

Won the toss and decided to have a bowl in seam up friendly conditions.

We started off the innings with alot of control, Anderson got Dhoni out for 1 in the 6th over, then Lewis got the massive wicket of Tendulkar for 8 with the score on 30. Monty soon got Sehwag. India don't look like they can play their normal aggressive way on this pitch so far, Lewis and Jimmy bowling well. They fail to build a partnership as we keep it tight and take regular wickets, Collingwood was the pick of the bowlers as he only conceded 21 runs from his 10 overs, getting Dravid out in the mean time. Flintoff took the wickets of Malik and Laxman in his return spell, Monty got Sharma bowled as India struggle to get to 150! Singh and Kumble play well 22 and 19 not out respectively to get India to 156-7. Monty 2-36, Fred 2-38, Colly, 1-21, Anderson 1-27 and Lewis 1-34. 46 for the 5th wicket and 41 for the 8th helped India somewhat, but still a very small total.

Vaughan was dismissed first ball by Mohanty, Tres and Strauss then played well, not letting the run rate escalate but playing carefully on this dodgy track. They put on 68 before Tres fell lbw to Mohanty, gone for 40. KP came out and Strauss took over the reigns, putting on exactly 68 before Kp went for 29. Loye joined Strauss and they finished the innings off, Strauss was Man of the Match with 70*.

The series was now won and I could relax, I decided to give a debut to Chopra and bring in Tremlett for Anderson, Vaughan also misses out. We lost the toss and were put in the field.

On a not too dissimilar pitch India played alot better, though Dhoni fell early to the impressive Lewis. Sehwag and Tendulkar put on 61 for the 2nd wicket before Tendulkar went for 39, caught in the slips off of Tremlett. Dravid was run out for 19 just after Sehwag reached a good 50. Laxman came out and they put on 38 for the 4th wicket before Sehwag went for 71 lbw to Pietersen, we needed to get rid of Sehwag, the Indian batsman of the series, he took a liking to Flintoff who bowled 8 overs for 56. Ganguly only made 3 on his return to the side, being caught by Strauss off of Panesar. Sharma and Laxman brought the innings back on track putting on 61 for the 6th wicket before Lewis had Laxman caught behind for 54. Tremlett came back into the attack and took 3 wickets, including that of Sharma, India got to 245-9. Tremlett 4-34 from 10, Lewis 2-57, Panesar 1-37 and KP 1-30 from 5 overs.

We lost Trescothick for a golden duck as Mohanty struck again early on. Strauss and Chopra put on 34 before Strauss went for 19. Chopra and KP put on 10 put Chopra went for 24 as we struggled in the run chase. KP and Loye put on 77 for the 4th wicket before Loye went for 29. Collingwood and KP put on 47 for the next wicket before KP went for a brilliant 68. Collingwood and Flintoff put on 38 before Collingwood went for 40. Our chances of winning looked very small, Davies went first ball bowled by Singh. Our chances had gone, Flintoff tried to bat with the tail and made some runs but we fell 8 runs short, Flintoff 43* from 30 balls. 237 all out. Singh 4-49, Kumble 2-50, Sharma 2-47 and Mohanty 2-41.

1st of a 4 Test series vs the West Indies.

12 man squad:

Cook, Strauss, KP, Bell, Vaughan, Trescothick, Nash (averaging 60 for Middlesex in CC including a double hundred), Flintoff, Anderson, Harmison, Hoggard and Panesar.

Bell misses out for the first test.

We lost the toss and Lara chose to bat first.

Hoggard got Gayle for just 3 runs in the first over, a super start. Anderson then got the massive wicket of Lara. Wavell Hinds was joined by Shiv Chanderpaul as the WIndies had a bad start. These two batted well though, not letting Harmison or Flintoff settle, and getting stuck into Monty when he came on. They put on 126 before Chanderpaul fell to Flintoff. Hinds and Sarwan put on 38 for the 4th wicket before Sarwan fell to Flintoff. Ryan Hinds joined his namesake but Wavell fell to Anderson as did Ryan just 3 balls later. Bravo and the tail wagged a little putting 41 on for the 8th wicket. I brought KP into the attack and he dismissed the tail of the WIndies as he took 3 wickets for 5 runs from 3 overs. 285 all out, Anderson 3-62, Flintoff 3-56 and Hoggard 1-47.

In reply we needed a good start and we got it as Tres and Strauss put on 92 for the first wicket before Tres went for 38, Cook got a 3rd ball duck 2 runs laters. KP and Strauss added some important runs to revive the innings, they added 64 before Strauss went for a very good 72. Vaughan and KP played well together, but Vaughan retired hurt on 43, Flintoff joined KP and they put on 97 for the 5th wicket (Including KP and Vaughans partnership) before Kp went for 40. Dave Mohammed was doing the damage as the nifty spinner took KPs and Strauss' wickets. Flintoff and Nash put on 50 runs for the 6th wicket before Flintoff was dismissed for 50. Nash played really well on his debut, making plenty of runs with the tail, he passed his 50 but was caught by Gayle off of Collymore for 62. We got to 354 with a lead of 69, very handy. Mohammed 5-122, Collymore 3-95 and Bravo 1-24 (7).

Gayle again fell to Hoggard as we looked to bowl them out cheaply. Unfortunately a certain Brian Charles Lara joined Hinds and they added 114 for the 2nd wicket before Hinds went for 91, bowled by Panesar. Lara was joined by Chanderpaul and they really frustrated me and my bowlers, and hitting Jimmy out of the attack. They added 162 before Chanderpaul fell to Hoggard. Lara fell soon after for a brilliant 131. Sarwan joined Ryan Hinds as the two put on another century partnership this time 111 for the 5th wicket. Harmison got the wicket of Hinds as WIndies were posting an imposing score for us to chase. Sarwan batted well with the tail, though Monty kept picking up their wickets, not before Mohammed had scored 29 valuable runs though. They finally declared on 527-9 with sarwan 127*. Monty 4-120, Hoggard 3-81.

With no Vaughan our target of 458 seemed impossible, and it proved to be just that.

Strauss and Tres played well putting 60 on for the first wicket before Tres went for 21 bowled by Jeremy. Then Mohammed and Hinds produced carnage as we lost our 8 last remaining wickets for 89 runs, Strauss (51) and Flintoff (31) the only batsman offering some solidity.

1 down, 3 to play.

It's a must win series, the captain (Vaughan) is out for 13 days so will miss the second test, Bell is expected to deputise.

Chopra and Jones came in for the injured Vaughan and the out of form Harmison.

Chopra misses out, only just, despite Cook scoring 11 runs in his 4 test innings.

We lost the toss and Lara chose to bat on a good looking pitch.

Gayle and Hinds got off to a poor start as Anderson bowled Gayle for 9. Lara then joined Hinds and they got back into the game with a 59 run partnership before Hinds went for 32. They then put on just 58 for the next 3 wickets as Anderson and Hoggard bowl well. Sarwan and bravo vame together at 130-5 as we look to close the innings off, unfortunately Bravo plays an outstanding innings, very aggressive too. They put on 121 for the 6th wicket before Sarwan is bowled by Panesar. Then Baugh joins Bravo and they put on 72 for the 2nd wicket, our good start has gone now. Bravo finally gets to brilliant 100, but is bowled by Flintoff the next ball. They add 80 runs for the last 3 wickets to get to 403! Jimmy was the pick of the bowlers taking 5-78, Panesar 2-65 and Hoggard 2-85. Flintoff took a single wicket. SiJo was expensive going at 4.8 rpo. And they clocked up the 400 runs in just one day!

We needed a good effort and a good start to stay in this game, unfortunately Tres is gone lbw to Collymore for just one. The out of form is joined by the in form Strauss, who has 3 consecutive test 50s to his name. They score very slowly for sessions 1&2, with 52 overs gone the score was 155-1. They put on 176 for the second wicket, a wonderful effort. Strauss went though, for 81 valuable runs. KP joined Cook, but unfortunately the young Essex batsman fell 7 short of his hundred, as he was run out by KP trying to take a quick single to gully. Bell was gone next ball for a golden duck. 182-1 was now 191-4. KP and Flintoff got us through to the end of the day. Come the morning they were playing aggressively and got anothe century stand. 108 runs for the 5th wicket before Flintoff went for 39. Nash couldn't do anything with KP though as he became one of Mohammeds 4 victims. Simon Jones and Kp put on a valuable 44 runs for the 7th wicket partnership. Another batsman fell short of his hundred though as KP went for 97. Hinds finished off the tail as we get to 366. Mohammed 4-121, Collymore 3-99 and hinds 2-69.

Gayle and Hinds made 40 runs for the opening stand before Hinds went to Anderson. We then took 3 more quick wickets as Anderson is on fire. Lara and Ryan hinds came together at 60-4, they got the innings back on track though wwith a partnership of 107 for the 5th wicket. Hinds went for 51. Lara went 8 runs later for 61. Bravo proved my nemesis again adding 80 runs with Baugh and the bowlers. Finally though Anderson cleared up Bravo for 49 and the other bowlers. Flintoff took the wickets of Hinds and Lara. Anderson bowled really well in this Test becoming the first bowler to take a 10 Wicket haul under my reign in Tests. Anderson finished with 6-78 and test match figures of 11-156. Flintoff 2-35 and Monty 1-29 from 15 tight overs. WIndies got 256, setting us 294 to win.

Trescothick and Cook got us off to a decent start as they don't let the WIndies bowlers settle. We had 5 sessions to get this reasonable total. Cook was in his 2nd big partnership of the game and my decision to keep him in the team was paying off. Trescothick was far more the aggressor though, hitting Bravos 8 overs for 50 runs. They just kept going and going as they got us to the target by themselves! A massive unbeaten partnership of 295, only 50 short of the all time England record for the opening wicket. They both reached centuries, Trescothick 169* and Cook 115*.

Wonderful.
