Danny Briggs is such a lovely young left-arm spinner, he has impressed me in every format I've seen him bowl in on sky this season. Hopefully the selectors take him as back-up spinner on our winter tours to the sub-continent instead of that hack Panesar again.

I know it's home advantage and all, but a pitch like this at the Rose Bowl is just shocking. Turning square from ball one means that batting second is almost impossible.

I haven't seen any of the match but seems like they are producing quite variable pitches at the Rose Bowl, last week was a flat pancake and this week sounds like they are back to the dustbowl. Not really ideal for a limited overs game but I wouldn't see anything wrong with a spinning pitch for a 4 day game.

Highly, highly doubt it. Especially as Panesar's had such a good year.

My XI for next year's World t20 at Sri Lanka:

Hales
Kieswetter/Davies
Pietersen
Morgan
Stevens (6)
Buttler
Trego (5)
Broad (1)
Swann (3)
Briggs (4)
Dernbach/Bresnan (2)

Backups

Davies
Bresnan
Samit Patel
Anderson

Going with 2-3 spinners in SC wickets is the way to go and England can do really well with this XI.

He has been pretty handy with both bat and ball from what I've seen in this year's t20 competition. His age is highly unlikely to help his cause though. The t20s against the Windies in September should be an ideal time to test this XI out.

He's a shite average county pro. Should in no way be even considered for England, he'd laugh himself at the suggestion he should be playing for England and not out of modesty.

Pretty good quarter-final results for Auckland, just Jimmy Adams remains in it now, so hopefully Hampshire lose their semi-final.

Personally am not convinced that his good numbers is a sure sign that he may be ready for county cricket if he where to be called up to play a test again if Swann got injured. Still seems to be bowling to quickly.

Although if Swann got injured in a test, playing 4 quicks would be the safer option.

But i'd prefer if the young Briggs is given a shot this winter. If he struggles no biggie since he is young. In the mean time Panesar if keeps performing domestically, can always be called upon for future tours etc...

I'd rather go the other way. Give Panesar the tour, still looks ineffective thats it. You could potentially set Briggs back if we throw him in too early ala Schofield. And to be perfectly honest I really don't think we need two spinners, such is the quality of our seamers at the moment.

Ye we gonna still have to carry a back-up to Swann just in case. All the great team who won in INDIA since they became a force @ home i.e Windies 74/75, 83/84, SA 99/00, AUS 04/05 although pace was their main wicket-taking threats, had back-ups to main spinner playing a holding role.

Of yes, but there's been mooted suggestions of playing two every now and again. (Mostly from the Sky commentary box tbh) Something we shouldn't do, nor should we play Patel as our 6th batsmen just because he bowls decently.

The Patel option is madness for sure. But the possibly of moving Bresnan up to # 7 in order to accommodate a second spinner is a option that certainly can be ruled out this winter in SRI or UAE tests.

Even the great WI team of the 80s moved Dujon up to # 6 in order to bring in Harper to give their attack 5 bowlers in the sub-continent. The heat in those countries means having that 5th bowler can't be ruled out.

I can only imagine Stevens is of the pace of about Kumar and that's the perfect pace for the Tiflex ball (which already swings the most out of pretty much any red ball in the world) to swing around at right angles.

Will have to watch the highlights when Surrey put them up.
