It is the Second XI and the Senior academy players that are playing. The only guy who hasn't been around is Chris Jones, who played the end of last year, I don't know whether he's available or not though, due to Uni stuff, as he plays for one of the UCCE teams. I imagine he would have been in ahead of Barrow if he was available. The only guys we have left are either trialists, or 16-17 year olds that make up the rest of the Academy. The only one I can think of who is on a full time contract, is our young 'keeper, but he's not the best with the bat at the moment, so no point in playing him over the likes of Waller, who can bowl and bat a little bit. The other Overton who played last week in the One Day game was getting a scan before hopefully joining the team as 12th man for this game.

Just surreal how many injuries we have and ironic that one guy who has been carrying us is doing so well that he's unavailable too.

Still, not going badly so far today, just need to find some runs from somewhere.

To be honest, I'd much rather be trying to get Jason Roy out, bad form or not for Ramprakash.

England could do worse than getting either of these Hampshire openers in the team for the ODIs. Great batting to watch.

At the moment Nick Compton seems a better in form choice than Bairstow.

If Compton keeps up this form, regardless of what Bairstow does in the third test vs windies - it would become fairly hard not to include Compton in the 1st test vs the proteas.

Back on topic, good to see Michael Thornely taking his chance with both hands at Leicestershire. He's been around the 2nd XI circuit for a couple of years, so hopefully he gets to make a career out of the game. Another Unicorns success story.

If i'm being completely honest, I was amazed that Bairstow was called up ahead of Compton. What more does a man need to do to get a test call up? Bairstow, unfortunately, seems well out of his depth at test level.

I'm actually starting to think that there is basically no reason to score runs in county cricket as unless you're South African born or were part of the setup from the age of 21, form and weight of runs barely seem to matter. I suppose it's the tricky nature of attempting to work out who is mentally able to deal with Test Cricket versus who is able to smash weak attacks around the park.

After Hildreth and Compton both being ignored in spite of form, I would suggest they'll need to score the same weight of runs for consecutive seasons at the least to breach an England team. Especially now that Bairstow, Bopara, Taylor, Patel seems to be the order depending on conditions.

well it took giving ramprakash and hick enough test matches to work out that that was in issue
