English Domestic Cricket

Who is your county team?

There's some debate though that they never got the same support and chances as some of the recent failures/moderate successes.

Ramps had 52 tests! Though he played in an era of good bowling attacks, he never lived up to his county record because I don't think he had the mental toughness and bottle for the international game. His domestic career is riddled with incidents which support this, indeed there was one this season.

Hick had 65 tests, again, good bowling attacks around at the time and his ODI record is about as good as any other England batsman in that format from that era. His test record, for that era, isn't that bad.

I still think that Ramps is as good a batsman as anyone in the world, but his problems weren't technical.

I've been a bit shocked at some of the comments regarding Bairstow. He got out to a short ball (and he'd played them pretty well before them, soft hands, etc, if not played it perfectly) and everyone has now written him off. Er, Cook was a puppy to some bowlers if you bowled just outside his off stump, since he sorted that, has averaged something like 70 and numerous other examples I can't be bothered to bring up. Bairstow will be around for a long time and this minor hiccough will be forgotten in the not so distant future.

It's the support issue more than the number of them. Dropping after good performances, getting picked when out of form, constantly playing with the feeling that you would be dropped with one failure.

Your point about Cook is apt for that reason. He was backed to succeed regardless of perceived weaknesses and failings, and hopefully the same will happen to Bairstow or whoever they eventually settle on. It's not lost on me that for all intents and purposes Bopara was going to play this series baring injury.

Absolutely, didn't Eckersley spend some time in the Unicorns too?

I know Durston played there for a bit, and this Querl looks like a prospect too.

Querl's been playing in my local league for the last couple of seasons and I think he's been around a lot of Second XIs on trial this year, so I'd be surprised if someone doesn't bite and give him a go. His stats from playing in Zimbabwe over the winter in First Class cricket are excellent too.

On the Bairstow thing, I think you could say he hasn't look great so far, but he deserves his chance. I'd much rather see him and other newer players brought in rather than seeing someone who's failed a few times already. Be interesting to see what England do though for the South Africa series. If they want a guy who's going to be hard to budge and could grind out plenty of runs, then Compton is the man.

The thing about Ramprakash is how incomprehensible his career was. His 52 Test career spanned 120 Tests. Steve Waugh wouldn't have made it through that.

Everyone talks about mental weakness, so you'd expect a player who utterly sucked against Australia; but he wasn't. Really, what the numbers show that he didn't like playing in drips and drabs. Playing consecutive Tests between 98 and 99, he made about half his career runs at an average of 41. The confusing thing is that while many players were in and out, they played alongside a number of players who weren't held ransom to form nearly so much.

I think the situation compromised his ability, but weak implies it was predetermined doom. The complete uncertainty, not knowing if even a good performance would keep you in the side, probably eroded everyone's resolve and ran many players through much sooner. In fact, the longevity of his career in spite of this says a fair bit about integrity.

James Taylor's century the other night was very impressive. From 60 off 59 to 115 off 77. Great knock, even if the bowling was abject at times.

How about Williamson and Marshall for Gloucestershire? Fantastic stuff, also Guptill doing well for Derbyshire. :)

2-3 from Kieswetter today.

He'll probably end his career with that average though. :D

If i'm being completely honest, I was amazed that Bairstow was called up ahead of Compton. What more does a man need to do to get a test call up? Bairstow, unfortunately, seems well out of his depth at test level.

Ye me too. But someone i have been suspecting that given Compton seems to be more suited to opening or batting @ # 3, if he was picked the selectors probably felt he would be a bit out of place @ the vacant # 6 spot.

However if the runs keep coming and Bairstow doesn't do something fairly impressive in the 3rd test, its going to hard not to pick Compton to face the proteas.

Yeah, in countries like yours, new players need to perform basically straight away or they might be dropped and never get a second chance. In NZ, the new players get a bit more leeway which is good, bad you decide.

I wouldn't say Bairstow looked out of his depth but I didn't see all of his innings. It was interesting to hear him talk about how he doesn't set goals because it means he could fail them which is a very strange and negative philosophy. Don't know if that's the right attitude for an international cricketer?

I've got tickets to the Surrey vs Sussex T20 match at The Oval in early July. It'll be the first time that I've been to a cricket game outside New Zealand.

I wanted to go on one of the Lord's tours, but they're not running when I'm over there because of the Olympics, even though I leave before the Olympics actually start.
