English Premier League vs Australian Football League

I hardly see any diving or rolling around over a fake injury. The only major diving ive seen was Lloyd during the 01-02 seasons which was not on, and was slammed by everyone in the footy public.

If your saying AFL players dive and fake injuries like soccer players do then your are completely nuts.

AFL players pretend they were pushed and get a free kick. Diving happens in mosts sports and AFL people exaggerate it. You don't know how much a kick in the shins hurts. It hurts for a while then goes away and you dont get that much in AFL because the ball is mostly above waist. Is that the only attacks you can get? Soccer is for diving and boring people?

And FB the reason you watch boring AFL games is because you watch Sydney! :p

I rarely watch sydney. If nothing else is on I watch AFL and its boring a lot as well.

How old are you? Because once again your making crap up. I NEVER said soccer is for boring people. How can i say that anyway? I play indoor soccer and trust me i know what its like to be kicked in the shins, without shin pads mind you.

I'm talking about forwards entering the box, when they are jostling with a player most simply go down. And its an obvious dive because they replay it a thousand times.

Jesus Christ, just watch most games Australia play, and watch the acting of the opponents, even the commentators get disgusted.

More boring then the NRL grand final? Now that was a snooze fest.

I'll tell ya what lads, i was bloody wrong about AFL. Just watching the Grand Final on Setanta and i'm hooked. It's like rugby but actually good. Amazing fitness levels that these guys have, it really is incredibly watchable, I'm pleasantly surprised. :D

Is it as sophisticated as people say?

I wouldn't say sophisticated as such, but bloody entertaining. I don't get the thing about AFL players not diving, because as soon as I turned it on Buddy Franklin fell over after barely being touched. Apart from that though the action was bloody brilliant. There may be some really complicated rules, but it's extremely easy to just turn on, watch and after a few minutes understand what's happening.

I'd best describe the sport as a perfect fuse between Rugby and Football. The athleticism is superb, with some of the tackles flying in being brilliant to watch. There was a great piece of play by Hawthorn where some fella slide tackled one of the Geelong players just to stop him getting the ball, this then allowed a fella from behind to take the ball, and kick a goal. Was superb. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on Setanta in the future, and be watching it in the future. I can now see why the likes of Ben are claiming it's better than football, I wouldn't go that far myself, because i'm a massive fan, but in terms of pure entertainment and athleticism AFL is bloody brilliant. You Aussies are lucky to be able to watch this stuff every week, if this one match is anything to go by anyway.

But it means other sports such as Association Football(yes i called it that) suffer. It's been growing rapidly since the WC06. Just look at some A-league highlights. Melbourne got its lowest crowd in two years against Perth glory the other day. It was 18,333 or something similiar.

I actually can't believe you just said that. I'm shocked:p

ROFL, the reason I contested you guys hyping it up before is because I'd only seen one little piece of action, and it looked just like Rugby. But I watched the entire Grand Final last night on Setanta and was enthralled by it. I've never sat and watched a sport that i'm new to that intently before. There's never a dull moment, it's constantly end to end stuff, with tackles flying in, blokes getting concussions and coming back on 10 minutes later. If a footballer got a hit in the face like that Geelong bloke he'd have never considered coming back onto the pitch, but that fella had a suspected concussion, had a quick break, did a few stretches and was back on.

I do have to say though, we'd not be able to play it here, the main reason for this being finding a place to play it. None of the cricket grounds would let you play there, and also the grounds aren't anywhere near as big as the MCG, with the AFL pitch being massive. Even Wembley wouldn't fit it in there. Also, I'm sure there'd be health and safety problems with it, especially considering the strictness of the UK government, they only just allow Football, let alone AFL :p.

But yeh, I'll happily admit i was wrong now that I've actually watched it. If the standard of play is consistent, then I can definitely see myself getting into the sport, it's superb. The Grand Final was one of the most entertaining Finals i've ever seen, quality stuff. AFL is well and truely ftw.

Yeh the Grand Final was an 'okay' game by our standards. I think the pressure of of the final made some obvious ball errors and Geelongs conversion at goal was pretty poor! But Hawthorn played a much tougher physical game.

And thats what i was trying to get at before, AFL will find it hard to spread as countries don't have the infrastructure. It's like trying to push Beach Vollyball into Iceland:p

ps. i'm still bloody shocked!!!

Yeh, even I noticed that Geelong were pretty awful converting their chances in the 50 into actual goals. Hawthorn were bloody good in the 3rd, after being pretty dominated by Geelong in the 2nd. It's like football really, the difference between a Premiership and Championship team is the conversion from chances to goals. It was evident in a recent Carling Cup game between Championship side Ipswich, and Premier League side Wigan. Ipswich had 10 attempts on goal in the first half, but only put away 1, Wigan were completely dominated, but made 4 good chances and put them all away. 4-1 the final score, but it should have been a hell of alot closer.

Why didn't you tell me this AFL malarky was worth watching in the first place? :p. Like I said earlier, it takes good points from both Football and Rugby and then merges them into one immense, gritty, athletic event. It's bloody brilliant. Never thought I'd be saying that a week ago :p
